That Hazardous Ratmalana Wall - Vimarsana News

That Hazardous Ratmalana Wall

The majority of the Air Safety experts and all experienced pilots in Sri Lanka say that the potentially  hazardous concrete wall at the Galle Road end of the Colombo International Airport Ratmalana should be removed and replaced with a fence capable of arresting an over running aircraft, if necessary. When the possible hazards were highlighted to the three ‘owners’ of the said wall, it was the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) that declared first that as there was no war situation at present, that they had no objection for its replacement with a fence. This was stated by none other than the pre...

Bay Area Reporter :: A riveting Ma Rainey: Viola Davis stars in marvelous music biopic

The first few moments of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom are electrifying. It's 1927 in rural Georgia. Hundreds of people, all of them Black, are lined up at the entrance to a huge tent. Inside, Ma Rainey, the Mother of the Blues, is singing her heart out. She works the crowd into a frenzy as she gyrates on stage, unashamedly flaunting her sexuality. Ma Rainey knows how to command an audience, and for Viola Davis Rainey is the role of a lifetime. Davis burns a hole through the screen in the film, which is now streaming on Netflix. Ma Rainey (1886-1939) was an early African American blues singer, o...

Black Narcissus, BBC Two, Saturday, 1.15pm Whether you loved, loathed or (more likely) were completely underwhelmed by the BBC's adaptation of Rumer Godden's 1939 novel about a group of nuns trying to set up a school in a remote Himalayan palace, you'll find an interesting contrast in the much-admired 1947 film version. Black Narcissus won an Oscar for its cinematography – the great Jack Cardiff was behind the camera – and it's thought by many to be the gem in the Powell and Pressburger portfolio, an already rich collection of films which includes I Know Where I'm Going, A Matter Of L...

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom: August Wilson's Women Are Some of His Best Characters - Vimarsana News

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom: August Wilson's Women Are Some of His Best Characters

By Princess WeekesJan 5th, 2021, 5:32 pm Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is an interesting film, based on the August Wilson play of the same name. Criticism of the movie has focused on how it is shot, but there is also a question of how women in the film are depicted. There are only two women in  Ma Rainey, the titular blues singer played by Viola Davis and Taylour Paige as Dussie Mae, Ma’s young girlfriend. Paige’s Dussie Mae is a character we don’t really get a lot of in the film. She is a subject of desire for both Ma and Chadwick Boseman’s Levee Green.
