Conway voters reject short-term rental regs

Now the question is, what’s next?
Does the defeat of the short-term regulations mean the town will be mailing out cease-and-desist orders tomorrow to the 500-odd rental properties in Conway? The short answer is no.
Minutes after the results were announced, Selectman John Colbath said: “We do not have the information to decide what to do next.”
Added Selectman Mary Carey Seavey: “I want to hear what town attorney Peter Malia has to say. If we are going to issue cease and desists, it has to be orderly.”
Colbath said he believes many people voted against the regulations because they thought within a month there would be properties for lower-income people to buy. “The reality is that’s not going to happen,” he said.

Hotel project abutters file nuisance complaint

CONWAY — Abutters of the proposed four-story Viewpoint Hotel in Intervale have filed a nuisance complaint with the Conway Planning Board.
Attorney Roy W. Tillsley Jr. of the Bernstein Shur Law Firm of Manchester at the board's Feb. 25 meeting presented a noise complaint filed by 16 people, including five residents of Dinsmore Road; five direct abutters at Mountain View Estates; two residents each from Neighbors Row and Balcony Seat View; and a resident each of Intervale Crossroads and Northbrook Condominiums.
The direct abutters include Mountain View board president Mike Sprecht, board members Nancy Goyette and Jenny LaBudde, and residents Stephanie Madden and Frank Masciulli.

Hotel industry Realtor weighs in on Intervale project

CONWAY — A project that meets the town's regulations but is just too big for the proposed location. That seems to be the sentiment of planners and residents — and a hotel industry insider — concerning a proposal for a four-story hotel in Intervale.
Full site-plan review of the proposed a 105,836-square-foot, four-story, 105-room hotel to be built at the current site of the 16-room Intervale Motel was continued to Feb. 25 by the Conway Planning Board, which last discussed the project Feb. 11.
More than 30 residents attended that session, voicing displeasure with the size of the Viewpoint Hotel being proposed by developer P.J. Patel. Homeowners in the abutting Mountain View townhouses said it would block their views of the Presidential Range.

Attorney Meier to run for Conway moderator

Ten people filed for 12 of the 20 town and six school positions opening up.
One person who is not running for re-election, Town Moderator Deborah Fauver, shared in an email Tuesday that while “I’ve decided not to run again, but I have recruited a great replacement. Then she added mysteriously: “You’ll have to wait for the sign-up period to find out who it is.”
That person is attorney Chris Meier, a partner with Cooper Cargill Chant in North Conway, which is the same firm where Fauver works as a lawyer specializing in estate planning.
Meier, who also serves on the board of the MWV Trails Association, joked with Conway Town Clerk Louise Inkell on Wednesday that Fauver "personally escorted me here” to make sure he signed up.
