Mumbai, India -- When I told friends I would be visiting India, the immediate response was, "Why? China's the country of the future!" Well, I've visited China many times.

To counter the challenges to America's leadership at home and abroad, even by long-standing allies, we must be more persuasive, win the war on terrorism and the war of ideas, work to reshape theinternational system, invest in a strong national defense, keep oureconomy on top, get our own house in order, and, most important,put the advancement of liberty back at the center of foreignpolicy.

Believing that words are "the essential units on which acivilization rests," The Heritage Foundation has provided a forumfor lectures by public officials, scholars, and policy experts onthe leading issues of the day: a pantheon of the most influentialconservatives in America in the last part of the 20th century andthe first decade of the 21st.

Frank Meyer, the intellectual father of fusionism, and Barry Goldwater, the first political apostle of fusionism, sought to unite, not divide, all conservatives. Their goal was a national movement guided by constitutional principles of ordered liberty. The solution for the American conservative movement in these challenging times is not a new but a renewed fusionism.

The biggest problem facing America's conservatives isn't our "progressive" president-elect or the liberal leaders controlling Congress. It's defeatism.
