Edwin J. Feulner: Thank you for being here. This is the eighth Margaret Thatcher lecture at The Heritage Foundation. Our previous distinguished speakers have included former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, human rights champion and Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky, and leading free-market economist Hernando de Soto. The purpose of the lecture series is to advance the principles of freedom and liberty so greatly cherished by our patron, Lady Thatcher.

How ironic that some senators recently killed a bill that would have limited damage awards in medical malpractice lawsuits. Because once people get a good look at the prescription-drug benefit Congress is preparing for them, they'll probably feel like suing.

Americans choose leaders to make decisions for us. But sometimes, the way to lead is by following. For conservatives to regain power in 2010, they need to do what voters want. As Ronald Reagan said, "Trust the people."

Years ago, the biggest question you'd get while flying was "Coffee or tea?" Now it's "Naked body scan or aggressive pat-down?"
