You have to be utterly delusional – or a member of a teacher’s union – to think that the US education system isn’t a total disaster. The most recent National Assessments of Educational Progress (NAEP, or “The Nation’s Report Card”) found barely a quarter of students are proficient in reading, geography and American history. While school lockdowns certainly accelerated decline, falling educational standards have long been observable.

The House Appropriations Committee approved a bill Monday raising minimum pay for teachers and education support staff, making it eligible for debate later this week.

The scores of less than 1 percent of the Iowa students in special education are being cited by the governor as the primary reason she is proposing to overhaul the state’s area education agencies.

There’s a lot of intense disagreements with the education bill that the House Majority failed to advance on Monday. One provision which got hardly any attention is the proposed statewide civics education curriculum. It’s an important enough subject that it should be added to the requirements for students to receive a high school diploma.
