and they shut down there. are stations not far from here, the lines are moving better. 15 minutes or so. it could get worse tomorrow when people start going back to work and realize they need fuel to get there. the governor spoke about the electricity issue. 2.7 million customers without power, after the storm it, now down less to a million customers big improvement but not to those million. it s going to be colder overnight. this there is concerns about tens of thousands of people staying in in their homes without heat. they may try to move some of those people to apartments and hotel rooms. we heard from homeland secretary janet napolitano about that issue. that is one part of it. we know there is natural gas issues they had to shut down because fears of explosions and fires. there are many roads closed. barrier island remains closed.
these are the sort of situations we re looking at. this line behind me right here, it is 60 cars long. it goes through two towns. it goes past the city lines. and that s how long people are waiting to get gas. this person is just about to get in there and will be probably be able to fill up her tank about 15 gallons. we ve estimated so far here, s.e., that they have seen 300 people come here so far today. he got 9,000 gallons a little bit earlier. that means that he will have enough until about 10:00 p.m. tonight. we re hoping folks like this bringing their gas canisters, that they can get gas. it depends where you go. some gas station owners say hey, you can t get gas because you effectively are cutting in front of everybody else. the good thing behind all this is that senator chuck schumer is saying he s going to open up new york and new jersey ports to allow a big influx of fuel. that will alleviate problems. and then we have an electricity issue which they re saying will be fully r
been stabilized. they have electricity. the cooling is working. that s good news. reactor one we haven t heard about any problems from for a while. that sort of narrows the problem to reactors two, three and four. reactor two you remember had that internal explosion and there was concern about its containment vessel. we re not sure what s happening there. in reactors three and four they really have been where the attention has been paid and the concern because of the spent fuel ponds and of course the other problems in reactor three. they ve cut the problem in half which is great. still a long way to go here. and as they try to make progress, they are likely to encounter new problems as they try to solve the electricity issue. all right. jim walsh from boston. always appreciate your expertise. thank you. coming up in our next hour, our senior medical correspondent elizabeth cohen tells us if we should be concerned about radiation in the u.s. food supply. it s a big question many of
