jobs report. but it isn't what it appears. >> under the hood, it's a rather soft number. >> this is one of those numbers when a lower unemployment rate is bad news. >> now, what makes that negative reaction to today's jobs numbers so amazing is that biden's job numbers for last year were as good or better than trump's jobs numbers for every year he was in office. the economy added 2.7 million jobs last year. that matches the best here of trump's presidency. the years one fox was saying his numbers went through the roof, gangbusters, smashed all expectations. and it's not just job growth and wages. inflation is under control. the stock market, which trump bragged about ceaselessly, is at record levels. manufacturing is being rebuilt in america. you hear a lot of republicans these days saying they want the trump economy back. what part do they want back exactly? by most metrics we use to measure the health of the economy, it is measurably

we're back with breaking economic news this morning, the first jobs report of the year, and we're learning in december the u.s. added 216,000 jobs. that's far above what economists expected. nbc's christine romans is here to break it down for us. great to see you. what does this tell us about the state of the american economy? >> you know, it ended the year resilient. last year was supposed to be the year of the recession, remember? that was the big forecast. that never happened, and even into the end of the year, you still had strength. that jobless rate, 3.7%, this is still in a band of 50-year lows for the unemployment rate. december adding a stronger than expected 216,000 jobs. that brings the net gain for the year, ana, at 2.7 million jobs added. when we put it in context, as you know, i like to say the trend is what's important here, right? you can see it is slowing job growth, but still a robust performance. and picking up speed into the end of the year. so i would call this still a resilient labor market despite

does that tell us that really it is not fit for purpose?— not fit for purpose? it certainly sun rests not fit for purpose? it certainly suggests that _ not fit for purpose? it certainly suggests that there _ not fit for purpose? it certainly suggests that there is - not fit for purpose? it certainly suggests that there is the i suggests that there is the possibility of some gaps. and that is one of the things which could have risen as a result of the pandemic. the numbers are backed up or projected to be around 2.7 million this year, in terms of the number of passengers. it was 1.3 million in a recent year. there is a 60% drop in revenue during the pandemic. and that is basically because of the passenger numbers because of the passenger numbers because it is a user pays system, it is not a public good model. so one of the questions you have to ask is is it possible that something should have been upgraded and wasn't? is it something that based on the risk base parameters that they had they may have not kept up with things that needed to be done? you can also

you have 8 people on that stage, maybe 3 or 4 of which everybody is familiar with. the reps said introduce me to yourself introduce yourself to america. fantastic ratings shows a point the numbers were good 2.7 million for 18 to 34. that shows maybe younger people are open to voting republican. we will see. the other thing that the president should keep in mind, when asked, in a yahoo pool, would you vote for the president? would you vote for donald trump if convicted? he loses 17 points. so, if any of these cases get convicted, that's why there's a lot of hope on that stage that the gap could rapidly close because donald trump has got a substantial lead over ron desantis. >> ainsley: you were there, brian and you were talking to everyone, did you get the cents they were still going to vote for donald trump but this could be the vice president or did you ever get the sense that they have an open mind? >> brian: both. i mean, i guess people there bleed trump and other people see i want to see how they are.

to fight some war that doesn't really exist. so this was extremely awkward. it is strange. i think the state needs to answer some questions about what the thilg was behind this. but i can only imagine the shock that some of these people must have felt when they probably just wanted to find a way to contribute, do some community service, give back to the state. some people who walked off were former military. they were like, this is not what i signed up for. i think to your point, there is the question of what the mission was, mission creep -- i also found this part interesting. of course, zaz said that the concerns were unwarranted but "the new york times" reporting, the original plan to field 200 volunteers with a budget of $3.5 million proposed in late 2021 grew to 1,500 people and $108 million. the first year budget includes $50 million for five aircraft and 2.7 million for boats.

stuff from 2016-2030. we ared badly failing. remember, this is all nations on the planet, the u.s. and everybody else have made these promises. we're not delivering partly because we just promised way too much. so what we've done is we've asked a lot of the world's best economists to say where are the very best deals if you want to help people and the planet and prosperity, where can you do the most good. it turns out that it's actually 12. we find 12 amazing things where you for little money can have a huge impact. let me just give you one example, moms and newborn babies. we know that lots of them die needlessly around the world, and we could for very little money help them. so about 2.7 million kids and moms die each year, most of them needlessly. if we implement very cheap policies mostly in the poor part of the world we could save 1.4 million kids and moms dying each
