Frontiers | Biogeography of Southern Ocean Active Prokaryotic Communities Over a Large Spatial Scale - Vimarsana News

Frontiers | Biogeography of Southern Ocean Active Prokaryotic Communities Over a Large Spatial Scale

The activity of marine microorganisms depends on community composition, yet, in some oceans, little is known about the environmental and ecological processes that structure their distribution. The objective of this study was to test the effect of geographic distance and environmental parameters on prokaryotic community structure in the Southern Ocean (SO). We described the total (16S rRNA gene) and the active fraction (16S rRNA-based) of surface microbial communities over a ~6.500 km longitudinal transect in the SO. We found that the community composition of the total fraction was different fr...

Plant biodiversity and the regeneration of soil fertility - Vimarsana News

Plant biodiversity and the regeneration of soil fertility

Both plant biodiversity and soil fertility are in decline. We find that restoration of plant biodiversity on a nutrient-poor, unfertilized soil led to greater increases in soil fertility than occurred when these same plant species grew in monocultures. The plant species in this biodiversity experiment fell along a trade-off surface in their nutrient content traits, precluding any one species, or any one type of species, from markedly increasing soil fertility. Our results have implications for degraded agroecosystems, suggesting that increasing plant functional biodiversity may help restore th...
