The New York Times' recent coverage of university presidents, by the numbers

Following a December 5, 2023, congressional hearing on alleged antisemitism on college campuses, in which Republican lawmakers grilled the presidents of three major universities — Elizabeth McGill of the University of Pennsylvania, Claudine Gay of Harvard University, and Sally Kornbluth of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology — The New York Times published more than two dozen news articles on the topic. The Times accounted for 29 of the 64 articles published by the newspaper and four competitors, including The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, USA Today, and the Los Angeles Times. After McGill’s resignation over criticism from her testimony, conservative media took advantage of increased scrutiny on the topic in order to campaign for the removal of Harvard’s Gay. After Gay resigned, they announced plans to use their victory to target other educational institutions.

this answer was widely condemned, deemed by experts to be legally correct but lacking in empathy. elizabeth mcgill resigned not long after the hearing. sally coren both of m.i.t. is still at her post. claudine gay live to fight another day at harvard, that is, this until christopher rufo dispatched the next prong in his plan. put a pin in that. i want to point out the irony of elise stefanik's political theater during that hearing. stefanik is an ardent supporter of donald trump, a man with a long history of using antisemitic tropes. he invited the antisemite kanye west and the holocaust denier nick fuentes to dine with him. he said that, among the protesters, you chanted jews will not replace us through charlottesville. there were some, quote, very fine people. he has been echoing hitler in his campaign speeches. no matter how many times you say the word antisemitism, you are the company you keep. okay, let's go back to christopher rufo. with the help of two conservative reporters, christopher burnett and anthony

eddie, this is a complicated issue. there are many things which are complicated about it. i just had a great conversation with asaf zamir about antisemitism which is a real issue which has to be discussed on american campuses. that's not actually what this was. this was something else. >> absolutely. let me just say i stepped down as chair. tara hunter is now the new chair of african american studies. i want to give her props. >> thank you. >> i would like to say this, though. i think you're absolutely right. the assault on claudine gay and on elizabeth mcgill and -- it's a part of this overall description of ordinary colleges and universities but more specifically only in overseas as these bastions of liberalism, these places where left-wing orchid oxy's are corrupting the minds of our children. it's at the heart of that claim that wokeism, ali, is the source of the critique of the state of israel. israel gets ran as a settler

campus anti-semitism as republicans claimed, but rather to put on display for the maga base the right's hatred of diversity, equity and inclusion. they really hate diversity. which, of course, is the product of the 20th century they hate so much. so, everything they do is about removing diversity. the mere presence of anyone who isn't white or male from spaces they think are reserved for white men drives them nuts. and in the wake of that hearing, the right wing anti-dei brigade got part of what they wanted. days later university of pennsylvania president elizabeth mcgill announced she was stepping down. but the two others claudine gay and m.i.t. president sally cornblue remained. claudine gay, the only black woman on the target list, became the focal point of a legion of mediocre men whose mission is to eradicate diverse people from education, from kindergarten

so that our community can navigate this moment of extraordinary challenge. gay's resignation comes nearly a month after she and the presidents of upenn and mit faced widespread condemnation following this testimony at a house education hearing on anti-semitism on college campuses. >> does calling for the genocide of jews cult know mike violate harvard's rules of harassment, yes or no? >> it can be depending on the context. >> it does not depend on the context. the answer is yes and this is why you should resign. >> reporter: house republican chair lease is demonic, posted "taco down," referring to gay and elizabeth mcgill. harvard's governing built initially backs between one, she faced scrutiny following charges of plagiarism in her several articles. gay, who was harvard's first black female president, stated
