In his farewell address, president obama spoke of threats to american democracy and called for an actively engaged and vigilant citizenry to preserve democracy. It falls to each of us, he said, to be those anxious, jealous, guardian of democracy, contemplating his future as a private citizen after the honor of serving his fellow americans.
