L’escriptor britànic George Orwell –pseudònim d’Eric Arthur Blair– (1903-1950) publicà en el llibre Homenatge a Catalunya la seva experiència com a voluntari antifeixista a la Guerra Civil Espanyola. L’autor de 1984 explica que estant al front veié un home que sortia de la trinxera enemiga mig despullat i corria mentre aguantava els calçons amb les dues mans: «Jo era allà per disparar contra els feixistes, però un home que subjecta els calçons no és un feixista, sinó tan sols un ésser humà, semblant a tu, i no et sents capaç de fotre-li un tret».
