Non-politician character that people seem to like. monica i ll pick up on jeb bush. one would argue, even with trump in the lead in the polls, with the establishment support, that jeb bush may be structurally the front runner in this race. i have to say, sitting there on the stage with him, i thought he had a kind of tepid performance and faded a little into the background. do you agree or no? i totally agree, chris. as i was watching last night, i thought i could physically see him receding on the stage. he s a very intelligent man. he gave a fine and respectful performance. but given the field, i don t think that cuts it. you have to bring your energy and passion. that s a problem that jeb bush has had on the campaign trail from the start. he doesn t look hungry for this race and he doesn t look hungry for the job. when you re surrounded by so many others who, in fact are, i think it made jeb bush look like
Trump. it is two-fold. one is donor. a lot of the donor class is terrified of donald trump and goes racing to jeb bush as the safe harbor. if you are a more let s say creditable conservative al alternative to jeb bush, your message is not getting out. we are talking about donald trump. and being unable to separate yourself from the pack and go head-to-head with jeb bush the bush people have been thrilled everyone is talking about trump while he s raising money and sailing along with establishment support. trump is offering such a contrast to a jeb bush and that is what the conservative base wants. they are sick of somebody who is up there and speaks in poll tested platitude. they want someone like trump.

Announcement. one of his rivals senator ted cruz made the rounds in new hampshire over the weekend. appears the e-mail controversy about hillary clinton is not going away any time soon. with me now to talk 2016 politics. thank you for being with me. benjy, start with senator rubio, he pulled fourth in a cbs news poll among republican candidates. we talk about cruz as a second tier candidate. where is rubio? rubio is definitely edging into the first tier. and i will tell you exactly why. he has been overlooked a lot of times because he occupies similar space to jeb bush in terms of policy but also in florida with similar base of fund-raisers and supporters. but jeb bush is somewhat of a weak frontrunner. has a lot of establishment support, but yet to show whether that translates to support from republican voters. if a few months from now he looks like he can t close the deal, there will be a lot of interest in finding a backup candidate who is acceptable to establishment and conservatives alike. marco rubio has a lot of those
Aware of these problems. and when you talk to walker insiders you say, what are you doing behind the scenes? they re reaching out to conservative news outlets who are very weary of walker s position on immigration because they re trying to balance. they want the establishment support. they don t want to lose the hard right. immigration is a key issue. if you know that, and the governor s spokeswoman says he did not say citizenship, that he is not for that, but if you know that, again, these are not nobodies in the room. these are people who understand the issue who are saying, he did say that. so we ll see what happens but if you know how toxic this issue can be, don t you have to be extra carefuling with your words? isn t that one of the things we re seeing about scott walker? there s a difference between running nationally and running in wisconsin and a state. he is having trouble closing that circle it just seems. it seems like he hasn t been able to do it yet. we ll keep an eye on this. i suspect there will be clarifications, clarifications, clarifications. he has to make clear himself how he feels about this.
