part of grievance politics. but how hard will he go after him? he does have a lot of establishment support. john thune coming out behind him. other senate republicans i've talked to believe that he is their candidate. and he'll have a ton of money. but does that translate to iowa and new hampshire with the republican base, trump-loving base, that's the question. >> senator scott is a safe landing spot because his colleagues like him, love him. think he's a powerful messenger for conservative values. so they can stay with him and not with trump. in his home state of south carolina where the former governor, nikki haley, will also be a candidate. scott's big bet, he just barely touched on trump, he said greatness, not grievances. is it his biography? is it that people look at his biography and say, wait a minute, let's do something different. >> my grandfather said to me, son, you can be bitter or you can be better. but you can't be both.

embarrassments and election defeats. you've got two who have officially broken away from trump and endorsed respectively ron desantis, chip roy, thomas massey this week did it. why aren't we seeing more given what just happened, and especially as more indictments are expected or do you think it's only a matter of time >> well, i mean, it is past his prologue there has never been collective momentum on the part of republicans to run away from donald trump, even in the face of overwhelming evidence that it's a bad play for them politically. you know, wouldn't surprise me if ron desantis doesn't get a whole bunch of endorsements going forward. as we learned in 2016, things like establishment support, endorsements, even professional consultants, fundraisers, what have you, is not going to move the immeneedle much when you ha the incredible blizzard of attention that donald trump is able to summon the his will, so, again, this is a classic kind of donald trump dynamic, and next thing, you know, i think what

consequences. >> kasie hunt, and our panel back with me. one of the key tests in the republican primary is does the endorsement of dr. oz carry weight. the candidates saying we can't move on from 2020. we can't move onto from a lie. >> because donald trump says we can't move on from the big lie which he invented and spread and keeps at it over these last many months and should he run for president? i'm sure it will be central to his campaign then. we have seen donald trump controls the republican party. we'll see what his endorsement in this race does. i think oz. was sort of below mccormick in polling. we see if there's enough to catapult him to win in may 17th. >> as you jump in, you mentioned dr. oz.. everybody knows dr. oz.. david mccormick, a lot of establishment support, and trump people who support him. and trump's endorsement was kind

block. endorsements generally don't mean much. what is the biden camp thinking they might get out of this or what might they get out of this. is john kerry potentially a different case here? >> you know, it's funny. conventional wisdom would dictate that endorsements like this might matter. that's the conventional wisdom of maybe 20 years ago. at this point john kerry who did very well in iowa -- he surprised people and i think he won iowa in 2004. he had a great close there. i assume there's good will for him there. john kerry is at this point a figure from a few cycles ago. i think what i guess theoretically what they might be thinking is that this could help solidify establishment support for joe biden. that's not really where a lot of the energy is in this race and certainly in iowa. i think in iowa where a lot of the progressive activists seem to be driving where this race

in terms of the apology and what we're seeing has happened is being accepted following the vice president in south carolina. >> reporter: yeah, richard. well, this two-day trip that the vice president is continuing here today is all about reinforcing what has been a strength for his campaign, and that is his depth of support with african-american voters. he started the morning at a church service. he's about to arrive here at a local restaurant where he's going to have lunch with some of his local endorsers who have endorsed his campaign. he really has strong establishment support in south carolina, especially among black leaders. and now what's interesting, richard, two weeks may seem like a lifetime in politics sometimes and it did feel like a lifetime for a lot of biden campaign advisers. advisers telling me yesterday, yes, in fact, they were a little bit on their heels over those comments a couple of weeks ago. but yesterday you saw him apologize. they say they're now on their front foot and, again, trying to highlight the issues that they think are playing to their

pollsters only get surprised by the strength of insurgencies. it's never a surprise that the establishment candidate, no matter what year we're talking about, turns out to be stronger than we thought. that's never the thing they miss. >> well, prognostication is often based on poll numbers and stuff, but also you look for endorsements, you look for money, you look for the professionalism of the campaign, you look for ads. if you're prognosticating in an old school fashion, you add up all this stuff that tends to be a sort of oblique measurement of establishment support. and so when establishment candidates don't do well, it does usually blindside everybody. but i mean, this year with the kind of politics that we've got right now actually in both the democratic and republican parties, i think prognostication is a very dangerous business to be in in general. >> well, it is as you mentioned, steve kornacki night in america. i know a lot of people think of

bus. >> let's remember trump also went on the alex jones show when he was running for president. they have decided that they're going to go where the audience is, and everyone just look the other way and pretend like we don't really know the audience here might be conspiracy theorists and might be racists and full-on crazy people because it's an audience and we can get those votes. it is the lowest common denominator in american politics. trump did a good job of it. >> there used to be a day where people would say, if that's your view, i don't want your vote. i certainly don't want you on my bus. thank you for that. is that where we are in today's trump party? >> precisely the opposite for her. she seems to have calculated this is her likeliest path to victory in the republican primary. she's running against martha mcsally, the favorite in that, got the establishment support. if she's going to win, she's going to have to find a far-right path, trumpier than trump, if you will. arizona is absolutely critical for democrats taking back the house. >> democrats are praying kelly ward wins.
