FAIRFIELD — The Wakeman Boys & Girls Club presented the Fairfield Police Department with 120 “survival kits” on Saturday morning inside the club’s fieldhouse.
The kits were donated to the department as a gift from the Great Futures Mentoring Program, officials said. Chief of Police Robert Kalamaras and eight other officers accepted the gifts on behalf of the Fairfield Police Department.
“I have to give credit to Coreen Ahmad of Wakeman (Boys & Girls Club) who reached out to us to provide this unique gift as a small token of appreciation,” Kalamaras told Hearst Connecticut Media. “We offer special thanks to the children who took the time to create the survival kits.”

During the COVID lockdown, I was so stressed — along with two-thirds of America — that I developed gastritis. I tried everything to cure it, including deep breathing, shallow breathing, meditation, contemplation, cabbage juice, kefir, Prilosec and a bunch of other treatments I never heard of or want to hear about again. Did I mention hot baths in lavender Epsom salt?

Responding to objections from doctors who want to provide COVID-19 vaccinations within their own offices, the state’s top public health official said Thursday she expects primary care physicians to be able to offer inoculations by late summer or early fall.
The Connecticut State Medical Society is raising the concern, pointing to difficulties some patients have finding vaccine appointments — and to the bond of trust between doctor and patient that could coax some hesitant people to get the vaccination.

On a day when Connecticut’s COVID positivity rate was the lowest it’s been in weeks, Gov. Ned Lamont announced a reopening plan Thursday that will allow restaurants and most businesses to return to full capacity this month.
But masks and social distancing will still be required.
Starting March 19, capacity limits will be lifted at all restaurants, retail stores, personal services facilities, houses of worship, museums, aquariums, zoos, office buildings and other similar businesses.
Commercial gatherings like wedding halls will be limited to 100 people indoors and 200 outside. Private residential gatherings will be limited to 25 people inside and 100 outside.

From much of Bridgeport to large swaths of New Haven, Connecticut has honed in on the areas it plans to direct at least a quarter of all new COVID vaccines in the coming weeks.
The state Department of Public Health has designated these 50 key areas by ZIP code and has committed to ensure 25 percent of all new vaccines reach residents there in a pivotal step to bolster vaccinations in vulnerable communities.

WESTPORT — Ellen Johnston was surprised on Monday when she learned she would be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine beginning March 1.
“I didn’t think it was probably going to be until May,” said Johnston, the head coach and director of competitive swimming for the Westport Weston Family YMCA.
She said she doesn’t expect the vaccine to change her behavior or plans at all. She will still follow all of the state’s COVID guidelines, and coaching doesn’t give her much time for plans outside of the pool.
