In November 2014, Floridians voted overwhelmingly in support of the Water and Land Legacy Amendment (Amendment 1), with the primary purpose of restoring funding for conservation land acquisition through the Florida Forever program. Florida Forever was launched in 2001 as a replacement for Preservation 2000, once the largest land conservation acquisition program of its kind in the United States. Funding came from a third of real estate documentary fees, but this has been greatly reduced since the Great Recession. But, as Florida’s economy recovered from the economic downturn, funding for this land conservation program did not. And so, a coalition of conservation groups, including the Florida Wildlife Federation, garnered the support needed to pass this historic Amendment 1.

But that fateful day in mid-January at the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve Park in the Big Cypress section of the Everglades, he spotted one and then it only got better from there. The FWC states there are only about 120-230 adult Florida panthers left in the wild, making them one of the rarest and endangered mammals in the world. Even at their best estimates, 230 panthers are not a sustainable population size. The Florida panther is currently listed as endangered and is protected under the Endangered Species Act.

The roads, once concrete, have been torn up and partially degraded in the Picayune Strand State Forest, south of Golden Gates Estates. The area now marks a joint ecosystem restoration effort between the South Florida Water Management District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, potentially one of the first to reach the finish line in an ambitious Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. The project will finish up in 2024.
