(Pocket-lint) - Facebook is introducing a Feed Filter Bar feature that will give you more precise control over your news feed. It basically lets you see posts chronologically - or by most recent, in the order they were posted - by simply toggling away from its usual algorithmic feed.
Technically, the company has offered users the option to sort feeds by “most recent , but it buried it in a settings menu. Facebook also launched a Favourites feature last October that allows users to select up to 30 friends and pages so that Facebook will display posts from them in a separate feed. Now, Favorites and Recents are front and centre - at the top of the news feed in separate tabs. ....

DHS DRILLS DOWN ON CYBER: Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Wednesday issued a “call for action” to confront mounting cybersecurity threats to the federal government, laying out a plan to combat hacking efforts following two major foreign cyberattacks. 
Mayorkas warned during a virtual speech hosted by RSA that “cyber threats are coming dangerously close to threatening our lives” and detailed plans for focusing on issues including debilitating ransomware attacks, bolstering the cyber workforce and securing critical infrastructure against attacks. 
“The government does not have the capacity to achieve our nation’s cyber resilience alone,” Mayorkas said. “So much of our critical infrastructure is in the private sector’s hands. We need to work with the private sector to protect the interests of the American people and the services on which we rely.” ....

You and the Facebook algorithm: It takes two to tango

The Atlantic, Adrienne LaFrance described Facebook as a doomsday machine: “a device built with the sole purpose of destroying all human life.” In the Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma, the filmmakers imagine a digital control room where engineers press buttons and turn dials to manipulate a teenage boy through his smartphone. In her book Surveillance Capitalism, Harvard social psychologist Shoshana Zuboff paints a picture of a world in which tech companies have constructed a massive system of surveillance that allows them to manipulate people’s attitudes, opinions and desires.
In each of these dystopian depictions, people are portrayed as powerless victims, robbed of their free will. Humans have become the playthings of manipulative algorithmic systems. But is this really true? Have the machines really taken over? ....
