Families unwittingly living in houses used as methamphetamine labs could be exposed to significantly higher levels of the drug ice during Covid-19 lockdowns, as financial pressures brought on by the pandemic prevent relocation and limit resources available for environmental health agencies tackling the problem.
In a new study, Flinders University researchers Emma Kuhn, Dr Jackie Wright, Associate Professor Stewart Walker, Dr Harriet Whiley and Associate Professor Kirstin Ross analysed the public health challenges facing environmental health agencies investigating methamphetamine contamination in houses during the Covid-19 pandemic. ....

Infringement notices issued at Townsville
Police have issued infringement notices to three men following investigations into an incident at a Flinders Street hotel in Townsville on January 16.
The incident occurred around 12.40am, when police were called to a disturbance in the Townsville Safe Night Precinct.
A 56-year-old man was transported to Townsville University Hospital for treatment and two men, aged 19 and 21, were issued with banning notices.
Following an investigation, all three men have today been issued with public nuisance infringement notices and the 56-year-old man has also been issued with a banning notice.

Identification of autism, followed by appropriate intervention, has the potential to improve outcomes for autistic individuals – but Flinders University experts say that presently not enough qualified people can diagnose.
Professor Robyn Young, a specialist autism researcher at Flinders University, says insufficient time and money lay at the root of the problem.
“I doubt that thorough testing is seen as financially viable. To undertake a thorough assessment, you really need at least 3 hours – and for adults who may have trauma or comorbidities, it is even harder,” says Professor Young.
“NDIS is putting restrictions on from whom they will accept diagnoses, and in some incidences, even though psychologists have undertaken approved diagnostic training through Autism SA, they are asking for the diagnosis to be endorsed by a clinical psychologist – of whom there are shortages with expertise in this field. ....
