URI to celebrate its 135th Commencement next weekend


University will confer 4,438 academic degrees upon 4,093 students at commencement ceremonies
KINGSTON – It will be much smaller compared to past celebrations, but the University of Rhode Island will still be ringing in its 135th Commencement next weekend. 
Despite all of the challenges that students have faced over this past year, and the sacrifices that had to be made in the best interest of public health, graduates were able to persevere. 
The university will confer 4,438 academic degrees upon 4,093 students at the commencement ceremonies held the weekend of May 21 through May 23. As always, the number of degrees conferred will be greater than the number of graduates, since so many students earn more than one degree. ....

URI announces 2021 commencement speaker


Doctor who uncovered Flint water crisis to deliver keynote address
KINGSTON — The University of Rhode Island has chosen Mona Hanna-Attisha, the Michigan doctor responsible for uncovering the Flint water crisis, to deliver the keynote address at this year’s commencement. 
She will also receive an honorary doctorate degree in recognition of her courage for exposing the public health crisis that occurred when the city — in a cost-saving move — switched its water supply from the Detroit system to the Flint River. The switch, which was made in 2014, resulted in toxic lead contamination and coinciding outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease.
According to President David M. Dooley, her remarks and the bestowing of an honorary degree upon her “could not come at a more important time.” ....
