their fourth day right now with hundreds of people searching by helicopter and high water vehicles. looking for survivors and of course unfortunately finding fatalities. those are people who tried to ride out the storm, decided not to evacuate despite the mandatory order. most of them according to the medical examiner died from drowning. storm surge is something to be reckoned with. this is a trailer park on the site as well. everything is wrecked and destroyed. the storm surge got into every trailer. even if it is structurally somewhat okay, inside everything flooded. everything is waterlogged starting to grow mold now and nothing at all is salvageable. as for the power, right now in lee county at 95% loss of power on day one. it is now down to 75% florida power and light is hoping to restore all power by the end of

really good progress, i think, in terms of the restoration of power. at the height of the storm we had about 2.1 million customers fpl customers out of power. we've restored 1.4 million customers the good news, just a while ago, we went to 700,000 without power. obviously, we still have work to do in west counties. that's where the focus is at the moment. and we're not going to stop until we get every single customer's power back on. >> walk us through some of the challenges that you face as this effort gets under way. because it is a complex job, right? >> it is a complex job. you know, i think you look at what we've been seeing in the west counties. you know, we've been out flying our drones, starting to really get eyes in the sky and understand the extent of the damage in the west. that's obviously where the storm surge in particular has caused a

after hurricane ian. in the wake of the storm's destructive path, more than 1.3 million homes and businesses in florida remain without electricity. about 75% of those outages are in lee county which includes where we are in fort myers and nearby cape coral. at the front of the effort to restore electricity is florida power and light. their spokesman, dave reuter joins us live. dave, thank you for sharing part of your weekend with us. i know it's a very busy time. as our crew was driving into fort myers last night, there were countless utility trucks headed towards this area. it made up the majority of the traffic as we were getting here. so, we know that you guys are working hard to get folks back online. how long do you expect it's going to take to get the lights back on in places like fort myers? >> good morning, boris. yes, you know, we are making

and governor desantis. >> i sure do love how irvine comes in to help. it's a really heartwarming thing to see. let's talk about the more than 1.2 million customers, jimmy, who are across the state there. they still don't have electricity. some areas need power grids entirely rebuilt and those won't be reconnected for at least weeks. what's being done to help those people? >> sure, i don't have the duke energy latest number as of yesterday. they underscored power to 650,000. i talked to florida power and light this morning. florida power and light, they had 2 million customers. that's the biggest in the state as of this morning, they've restored power to 1.4 million floridians. so, i mean, to be able to do that, they leaned forward with 42,000 lineman. so, to be able to lean forward those guys are working feverishly through the night. but here is a challenge. you've probably heard about i-75 has been stopped because of the flooding. we saw this with irma. historic rains bringing

in other words, at some stage search and rescue ends. you just know people haven't survived and you turn to recovery. in hurricanes people die from water and wind and mostly debris. most hurricane deaths in the united states, probably not in this case, but most hurricane deaths happen after the hurricane, either people going into water and they get caught or electrocuted, generators and carbon monoxide poisoning. people need sto be served withi three days, water, medicine, food so people don't become ill or even die as a consequence of the hurricane but not because of the hurricane. those are the numbers that we look at at this stage. >> we just got this update from the florida power and light and the news is just awful.
