Alabama Senators approved legislation late Thursday to overturn the state’s 28-year ban on yoga, allowing it to be taught in public schools.
The legislation, HB246, strips away references to religion or rituals from school-taught yoga and limits it to only poses, exercises and stretching techniques. The bill defines allowable yoga to poses exclusive to sitting, standing, reclining, twisting and balances. All exercises and techniques also are to have exclusively English descriptive names, the legislation reads. ....

Bill to allow yoga in Alabama schools advances after tie vote last week

The committee voted 5-2 to approve the bill by Rep. Jeremy Gray, D-Opelika.
Some senators who were not on hand for last week’s 4-4 vote were at today’s meeting.
The state Board of Education banned yoga from Alabama schools in 1993 because of its ties to Hinduism.
Gray, who played football at North Carolina State, began doing yoga because of his athletic career. Besides the physical benefits of the exercises, Gray said it can help students mentally and can help with behavioral problems in school. It’s his third year to sponsor the bill. ....
