In his recent speech made at the World Economic Forum, President Xi Jinping reflected China’s global vision of multilateralism, peaceful coexistence and opportunities for all in a shared future. In his speech, President Xi used the world “multilateralism” about 11 times. This reflects the vision of not only President Xi but the dimension where China is looking at its foreign policy. In the times of the pandemic, when the world is grappling with the challenges of not only great recession but threats to values and divisions are growing fast, multilateralism was a solution that President Xi echoed in all his public speeches. In this specific speech at Davos, President Xi highlighted that the world needs to shun all sociopolitical differences, build on the promotion of economic and trade with equal distribution of wealth, develop close relations between north and south and finally together fight the challenges. Chinese characteristics of multilateralism are about openness and inclusiveness instead of locked positions and segregation. In his speech, President Xi has outlined five main proposals wherein he has vowed to further develop international cooperation in the fight against COVID-19, advance science, technology and innovation, a win-win strategy of opening up will be implemented and a new type of global political order will be evolved. The speech holds significance after it has been delivered after the tumultuous change happened in Washington where President Joe Biden took the oath as the next President of the United States. The message from President Xi is loud and clear that China would like a world where there is an atmosphere of trust and where there is consolidation of having mutual consensus on building a community with a shared destiny.
