“This Action Plan expands upon our efforts in the fight to protect our environment with actionable steps to mitigate climate change, increase resiliency, invest in a green economy, and ensure equity,” Mayor Steven Fulop said in a statement.
“The consequences of climate change disproportionately impact minority and low-income communities, and so it is especially important for Jersey City to continue our aggressive and progressive efforts by incorporating community feedback to address our environment’s worst health offenders.”
High impact actions for reducing GHG emissions under the plan include:
· Requiring 100% clean energy for municipal facilities by 2030.

Renovations will officially begin on Reservoir 3 now that officials and community members have broken ground on the project that represents the largest park investment since the creation of Berry Lane Park.
The city has committed $6 million to preserve the urban oasis, including the historic pumphouse and fully funding renovations for complete public access to the 14-acre site.

On  March 15th, the first date allowable per state guidelines, Jersey City will dedicate the full allotment of vaccines to the 4,700 teachers and staff within the Jersey City Public School System in order to safely return the nearly 30,000 students to in-person learning.
The district’s students have been on a remote learning schedule since March 2020.
“We will open classes provided that the health data continue to improve and can maintain a safe environment with adult supervision for students,” said Superintendent of Schools Franklin Walker.
The district asks that parents and staff complete an online survey to help plan for reopening.

“At 8:00 p.m., on August 13, 2020, our certified laboratory notified our water system that a sample collected on August 12, 2020 confirmed the presence of E. coli in our water system’s drinking water,” the letter begins.
“When this occurs, we are required to conduct a Tier 1 public notification to inform customers of the event and how we plan to correct deficiencies that potentially caused the contamination.”
The letter continues that while a Tier 1 public notification was issued on August 14, 2020, the state Department of Environmental Protection identified three deficiencies with this notice.
For one, the initial public notification had an end date and time for the boil water advisory – pieces of information that aren’t supposed to be included.

Jersey City Police Director Tawana Moody is taking over all police department operations in the wake of Chief Michael Kelly’s recent retirement, bringing the city’s police force under the leadership and oversight of a civilian, Mayor Steve Fulop said Tuesday.
Fulop said appointing a civilian to oversee the department will improve police accountability, transparency, and community relations. The move also expands civilian access to Internal Affairs investigations, including resident complains of potential police wrongdoing, he said.
“Public perspective is just as valuable as police perspective, and I believe this latest step we’re taking will strengthen police/community relations,” Fulop said.

A little more than a year ago, artist and lifelong Jersey City resident Pat Olsen did a diorama in response to a Project Greenville call for art submissions. That diorama featured, opposite a narrow green strip with golden high-rises on top of it, Olsen’s depiction of a barren landscape.
A take on South Greenville, skeletons lay outside a graveyard of things Olsen noted were lost to the area (bus lines, a supermarket, and a bank).
There was also a very small space fenced around a dead tree from which a buzzard overlooked the area. That area was Olsen’s artistic depiction of Martyniak-Enright Park, which sits at the intersection of Pamrapo Avenue and Old Bergen Road.

The Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority has hired a law firm to investigate a cyberattack that blocked access to “vital” water and sewer service information and led to an “emergency condition.”
The ransomware attack, which occurred “on or about” Sept. 30, caused the agency to “lose access to vital information and documentation related to the provision of water and sewerage services to the citizens of the City of Jersey City,” according to a resolution approved in October.
