In a significant year for Jammu and Kashmir, the Supreme Court endorsed the revocation of its special status, dividing it into two union territories. The Modi-led government's diplomatic win hosted a crucial G20 meeting in the Kashmir Valley. However, a year passed without elections for the Legislative Assembly, delaying urban local body and panchayat polls.
"India needs to be cautious in its approach while articulating its position on conflicts in G20 as well as on allowing the forum to be politicised as there are risks of South Asian conflicts coming to the agenda in a future presidency led by China or some other power," an observer of G20 affairs said on condition of anonymity.
Senior BJP leader Sanjay Jaiswal downplayed the pleasantries exchanged between PM Narendra Modi and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar at the G20 meet, stating that it was just a common courtesy. Jaiswal ruled out a thaw in relations with Kumar's party, JD(U), and emphasized that the BJP is determined to form a full majority government in Bihar in the 2025 assembly polls. Meanwhile, JD(U) accused the BJP of hindering the Nalanda International University project and criticized the lack of mention of Bihar CM's recognition as a "climate leader" by the UN.

The G-20 leaders gathered at the Raj Ghat memorial in Delhi for their family photo, with some leaders walking barefoot through the rain-soaked ground. Symbolism was evident as the absence of China's Xi Jinping and Russia's Putin highlighted tensions with the US and its allies. The inclusion of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in the photo caused disagreements.
