Hunt for ancestral roots proves a popular pastime

The Palmerston North Genealogical Society, a branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists, is seeing its membership grow at a surprising rate.
Its research day in April saw 71 enthusiasts from Manawatū, Wairarapa, Napier, Whanganui, Wellington and other towns crowd into its venue in the Kilwinning Lodge rooms, Church St.
They heard talks, asked questions of experienced members and did research from the masses of books, maps, photos, online resources and other materials the society holds.
The featured guest speaker was Gareth Winter, newly retired Wairarapa archivist and historian, and recipient last year of the Queen’s Service Medal for services to historical research. ....

Retired Masterton businessman and newspaper columnist Rick Long vividly remembers the day he met Prince Philip in Masterton on a hot summer day over 67 years ago.
The then-13-year-old Long, now 80, was one of a group of Boy Scouts chosen to stand front and centre to welcome the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh when they spent the day in town on Friday, January 15, 1954.
Although a photo of the occasion - including the prince and Long - had appeared in the Auckland Weekly, Long had never seen it. ....
