Bronze Age Man Would Have Worn Nicer Pelts If He'd Known Scientists Would Find His Preserved Body In Bog

Bronze Age Man Would Have Worn Nicer Pelts If He’d Known Scientists Would Find His Preserved Body In Bog
DARTMOOR, ENGLAND—Caught off guard in one of his ratty old goatskin tunics, Bronze Age tribesman Lugu claimed Thursday that he would have dressed in much nicer pelts had he known that scientists would find his preserved body in a bog 4,000 years after selecting the outfit. “Shit, I would have put on a beaten-reed underfrock and one of my nice ceremonial bear’s fur capes if I had any idea that archaeologists in 2021 would exhume my body after its natural mummification in peat,” said the hunter-gatherer, admitting that he would have appreciated enough of a heads-up to let him run home to his wattle-and-daub hut for a clean shearling cap and buckskin leggings. “God, it’s just my luck that the one time I go out wearing a shabby old number with holes in it, I fall into a mire and get encased for centuries in an anaerobic environment. Now people will think my beat-up wicker shoes are what I wore on special occasions.” At press time, Lugu was reportedly objecting to being listed in scholarly journals as “the Dartmoor Goatskin Bog Hobo.”

Essar to invest 750 million pound to set up hydrogen project in UK

Essar Group in partnership with clean energy specialist Progressive Energy will invest 750 million pound to build the UK's biggest low carbon hydrogen production hub at Stanlow refinery in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.
The investment in two plants will be part of the HyNet scheme, a project to supply low carbon hydrogen to industrial sites and homes in north-west England.
"The joint venture will manufacture hydrogen at the refinery for use across the HyNet region," the firms said in a statement.
The plants would be built next to Essar's Stanlow refinery in north-west England. Natural gas, and fuel gases from the refinery, will be converted into low carbon hydrogen, with carbon dioxide captured and stored in depleted undersea gas fields 60 km offshore in Liverpool Bay.

BBC Radio 4 LW-20191211-050000

Our correspondent to Will Grant is in the Mexican capital and began by telling us how it's being received there I think we need to split the response between the Mexican government and the Mexican people in the Mexican government a welcoming it I think the idea of these negotiations dragging on any further was very unappealing to the government of President and his men were Lopez Obrador he felt that it was going on for long enough and he wanted to sort of get into new issues a new relationship in terms of trade with the United States and with Canada however when it comes to mix can people particularly those who use industries perhaps rely mostly on parts coming from the United States finished products going back up north you know they are watching and waiting I know it's a cliche but it's very very true I mean they just have very little sense of exactly what this will mean for them they're told that it's essentially NAFTA in new clothing but they still don't know and they won't know until next year exactly what it will mean on a day to day level for their family incomes for their job security and so I remember Donald Trump describing NAFTA as the worst trade deal the u.s. Ever done this is now the best one apparently what are the changes here well I think one of the key changes is in terms of the protection of workers' rights and ironically enough from a Mexican perspective that will potentially make it less competitive than some of its neighbors to the least in the short term because of see the low wages that make so on can offer kind of there are quite an attractive option for many multinational companies but I think the president and his men were not as overt or as a left of center leader had his own reservations about NAFTA very different to Donald Trump but nonetheless you know also perhaps wanted to see many parts of the NAFTA deal redrawn and I think will be satisfied that there is going to have both President Trump and the Democrats are claiming credit for this deal how significant is it politically in the u.s. I think we're going to hear a lot about it in 2020 which is of course an election. North of the border from where I am certainly Donald Trump is going to play very very hard I think on the concept that this was something he set out he would do in his 2016 presidential election campaign and has achieved it in his 1st term and you know that's going to bring him a lot of satisfaction even if the Democrats are going to be saying quite the opposite that ultimately the only thing that was beneficial in this new deal with the provisions that they added to it that as Nancy Pelosi put it it was infinitely better the one that they achieved today than the one that was proposed by the trumpet ministration will grant in Mexico when the World Trade organization was founded nearly 25 years ago it was established as an international body to regulate trade between nations one of its functions is to adjudicate in trade disputes and it does this through an apple 8 body of judges this is ground to a halt because the u.s. Has blocked the appointment of new judges a minimum of 3 needed and today there is just one in place w.t.f. Director General Roberto as of a day told the b.b.c. This was a big blow but said work to fix this apple late body was going to start immediately and this conversation will probably require significant changes in the dispute settlement mechanism changing considerably what we have today into something different that accommodates the concerns of the u.s. And that everybody else can live with and I think there is open mindedness in Geneva about that but it's a tough conversation Jennifer Hilman is a professor of practice at the Georgetown Law Center was also recently one of 7 judges on the applet body she explains what options are now available to the w.t. Members in settling disputes there's no question that right now as of today the appellate body is effectively dead and the question is what comes next that I think it is too early to tell how dramatic an effect this. It's going to be my own sense is it's going to affect the detail in 3 ways One is what our country's going to do now and the question is are they going to choose various other work around mechanisms like using arbitration instead of a formal appeal process or they could agree in packs that we just won't appeal any decisions will simply live with whatever the panel has come out with if countries go down that road that are less desirable but nonetheless work arounds then I don't think there will be as dramatic an effect but countries may choose instead to go ahead and file a notice of appeal which will have the effect of blocking the adoption of a power report and blocking the outcome of a given dispute and if that happens countries may that very well then take matters into their own hands and start retaliating and then the other side retaliate gets against the retaliation and you start into a little mini tit for tat trade war over every single dispute it's not clear yet which of those roads countries are going to choose to go down Professor Jennifer Hellman officials in New Zealand say volcanic tremors have increased on the white's island and there's a 40 to 60 percent chance of further eruptions in the next 24 hours it means further delays to the recovery of the victims of Monday's fatal eruption the director of civil defense and emergency management Sarah Stuart Black said while this was a priority it would be easy we all agree that retrieving bodies of the deceased from the island isn't it Salut imperative. Every day that passes with those bodies recovered is a day of anguish for the loved ones who have been affected we recognize this and we're doing everything we can however. The preservation of human life and the prevention of fear their human home must be taken into account 6 people are confirmed dead 8 others are missing presumed dead and their families a said to be desperate to get them back but the deputy police commissioner John Timms said the recovery effort had to be balanced with the ongoing risk place or perhaps it would be committed to removing the bodies from the oil and for family and friends we have sought advice on the current environment requirements of those going to the oil and the Kiran transport patient of bodies from from when they are recovered the environment on the on has changed. Increased activity since early this morning 25 of the 30 injured people meanwhile are in a critical condition the prime minister just send Arjun said the focus was ensuring they got the optimum treatment at the burns units to which they've been admitted they absolutely focus on at the moment is ensuring that we have a very clear for those who are injured as a result of the eruption so. Those individuals say Have thing placed across hospitals in New Zealand to ensure that we're making the use of the expertise. In injury said I have said are in units around d.c. And New Zealand's prime minister just and Neil has some other stories from our news desk officials in Jersey City across the river from New York City 6 people have been killed and 3 wounded in a shootout that moved from a sandwich route to a kosher grocery store and lasted several hours the dead include a police detective and 2 suspected gunmen along with 3 customers up the shop Jersey City's police chief Michael Kelly said he didn't think there was a terrorist motive that's part of the investigation I can tell you we have no evidence that pointing in that direction at this time but that's certainly on the table Somali police say they've ended an Islamist attack on a hotel in the capital Mogadishu killing all far you've got men 2 members of the security forces and 3 civilians were also killed during the fighting at this Somali youth league hotel. The White House says that President Trump has warned Moscow not to interfere in next year's presidential election during a meeting behind closed doors with the Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov was to Trump tweeted that election meddling featured on the agenda of what he called a very good meeting but out of news conference Mr Lavrov denied that elections had been discussed at all for this next I said we've come to one of the most famous restaurants in London if not the world it is the b.b.c. Canteen in this nuclear bunker like room with shelves laden down with delicious temptations this is the setup for the next story because the Royal Society for public health is now calling for exercise information to replace the calories the nutritional content on food and drink packaging In other words the food that we see here should tell us how much exercise you need to do to burn it off with me is our reporter Ed Horton Ed let me pick something at random a Mars Bar how much exercise would I need to do to burn that off. Contains about $229.00 calories that would take you 42 minutes to burn off or if you're running at 6 miles an hour that's about 9 and of kilometers an hour it would take you 22 minutes to run it off that's about 3 and a half kilometers Ok let's throw here past the cakes and the flapjacks to the cans of soft drink has a famous want to read can you know what it is how much running would I need to do to burn off a can of coke without a count of the Early on a regular can of sweet fizzy drink contains about $250.00 calories that's 50 minutes running or about 7 half kilometers of walking so on and off so what do the research is saying about this well Amanda daily is a professor of behavioral medicine at left for university and she did the research what we want to try and do is kind of alert public to the end if you. Like action a. Do I really want to but throughout the topic is the topic really were there and when you've given the information and that why the then. Maybe the from going out to the left. So that's the research I'm on the daily Ed come with me down to the hot food area or I've seen you here before how about a hamburger and chips look after this program at 2 30 in the morning I'll probably get one and our normal regular size cheeseburger with chips comes in about $695.00 calories m I want some ketchup on that and a regular sashay is about 10 calories so you're talking about almost 700 calories and that would take me an ounce 40 minutes cycling to burn it off if I was running 66 minutes and it was keeping my house over 4 hours so this is this information isn't there at the moment do you think people named this will these people in Manchester seem to think is a good idea you can tell them you need to work for half an hour to get rid of. Said to me I had a little girl about 9 months ago she is now and I'm trying to lose weight said Be nice to know like what everything equals up to you and I've known you for a long time so I feel I can ask you this let's imagine it's well after the program how about a wind down glass of wine while exciting your 250 mil comic that's going to last glass of wine that contains $214.00 calories which would take you about 35 minutes to walk it off or once again about 20 minutes to run itself and you are the keeper of the devil's larder and with that we will walk back toward studio s l one it's about 200 meters which by my calculation is about 2 peanuts worth something about it Horton with the facts and figures and he will be pleased to hear I will be cycling home to get my glass of wine after the program is coming up to 520 g.m.t. . I'm going to approach my breakfast with caution Good morning this is where we bid farewell to our world service colleagues for another night and set radio falls wheels on course for another day navigating through the highlights of the final hours of the election campaign it's not all politics though we're off to one of the U.K.'s biggest insect farms before 6 o'clock and later begin a new series of thought provoking talks boys I knew robbed and carried knives frightened vulnerable musical witty sporty talented young boys personal tales and powerful stories our lives are shaped by these unexpected encounters and happenstances some good some bad a new series of thought provoking talks beginning with the writer Louise doubting I'm a great believer in characters in novels having jobs I think they should eat breakfast and that occasionally their shoes should rub forthought on b.b.c. Radio 4 it's half past 5 on Wednesday the 11th of December Good morning this is news briefing with Chris Aldridge party leaders will be crisscrossing the country in a frenetic round of rallies on the final day of campaigning for the general election officials in New Zealand say there's a risk of further eruptions of the White Island volcano in the coming hours in this is the Us Mexico and Canada have signed a new deal in a further step towards replacing the NAFTA trade agreement and in sports Liverpool and Chelsea are through to the last 16 of the Champions League. Party leaders are preparing to make a final attempt to win the backing of undecided voters on the last day of campaigning ahead of tomorrow's general election they'll be appearing at rallies across the country in a last ditch bid for support of political correspondent Ben Wright says they will be hammering home their core messages for Boris Johnson and he will say there cannot be another hung parliament there can't be a coalition between Jeremy Corbyn the Lib Dems the s.n.p. Because that would just mean in his view more delay no breaks it further deadlock Jeremy Corbyn will stress his commitment to spending a lot more money on public services enabling people to have pay rises more child care and of course he'll keep the n.h.s. At the center of his pitch the B.B.C.'s opinion poll tracker suggests the conservatives retain a solid lead over labor in the final week of the campaign a You Gov poll published last night suggests the Tories are on course for a majority of around 28 seats that's 40 seats fewer than the same organization projected nearly a fortnight ago the researches say the wind margin of error means they cannot rule out either a hung parliament or a knowledge a conservative majority the poll is based on interviews with about 100000 people during the past week for counting tremors of increased or New Zealand's White House and meaning probable further delays to the recovery of the victims of the eruption on Monday officials say eruptions are likely of the next 24 hours 6 people are confirmed dead 8 others are missing presumed dead. Donald Trump urged the u.s. Senate to try him sooner rather than later after Democratic leaders announced impeachment charges against him the president is accused of abuse of power and obstructing Congress speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania Mr Trump dismissed the allegations as flimsy and pathetic There are no crowds there impeaching me and there are no crimes this has to be a 1st in history there impeach him you know why because they want to win an election and that's the only way they can do. A team of u.k. Scientists says food and drink labor who should display how much exercise people need to do to burn off the calories contained in the product the researchers from laughter University argue that such an approach would be a more effective way of tackling obesity than the current system of listing calories one of the scientists Amanda daily says people who eat less if they're told how much activity is required to use up the energy if you buy a chocolate must contain 500 calories example and that about 50 minutes of running and it trying in a way you know that the public can easily and that and rather than just telling people that have 500 calories which actually really mean anything because no contact with the calorie really home base has been rated the worst online retailer in the u.k. In a survey of 7 and a half 1000 shoppers the participants are all members of the consumer group Which were asked to evaluate websites they'd used over the past 6 months shoppers at home base offered poor range in value and had ignored complaints the store says it's improving its web offer with more products. 1st b.b.c. News now to the weather from the Shipping Forecast most of school shows around but are they going to make their way to. They will do indeed Chris is the king very unsettled for the foreseeable future will have areas of low pressure being further gales at times yesterday was a very a while day we had a pretty vigorous area of low pressure moving to the north the u.k. That brought gales and heavy rain pretty widely but it was mild for the time of year the top temperature of $14.00 Celsius imbued in Cornwall but it was very wet for many especially parts of Scotland where we saw 69 millimeters recorded in June so today then we've still got a low pressure near by not going to be as wild or is Windies it was yesterday but it's still going to be a very blustery day but we should see quite a bit of sunshine around has been a cold start those temperatures did that plummets during the night skies cleared and the winds eased so it is going to be a bright day today with sunshine and showers now the showers will be heavy on frequency across northern and western areas really got them piling into Scotland western parts of Northern Ireland some getting into Wales in the southwest now and they will turn out to be heavy maybe thundery through the afternoon because the temperatures below today will be wintry over the high ground some eastern parts may stay dry altogether Most showers will be in the West but it's going to be a cold and windy day with temperatures in Scotland in Northern Ireland range from $3.00 to $8.00 degrees in the Wales $5.00 to $9.00 Celsius tonight it turns quite cold up the further showers in the north and the West the country will be blustery and then into Thursday the next area of low pressure starts to sweep in to the southern half of the country bringing further wet windy weather was snow on the hills Scotland Northern Ireland some sunshine but also when she shows me on the hills I think we'd better leave it there thank you stuff 25 to 6 will get through the newspapers now both at home and abroad here the front pages are dominated by the closing stages of the election campaign the Guardian says Boris Johnson Corben are barking on a final scramble for votes with both the Conservatives and Labor describing the. Morrow's election as the most important in a generation a number of papers give prominence to the latest You Gov opinion poll with their headline suggesting the result could be close to time says the poll sets the last 24 hours of the campaign a light the eye has the headline Corbin closes on Johnson as race tightens for the mail it's Britain's future down to the wire express highlights the comments by the shadow health secretary John Ashworth criticizing germy Corbin's leadership and declaring his party has no chance of winning demolition job on Corbin by his own man is the headline The Telegraph leads with a promise by the prime minister to bring in tougher sentences for terrorists sex offenders and violent criminals if the Tories are reelected it tells the paper the criminal justice system isn't delivering the paper says Mr Johnson's perch comes amid growing anger in government following a series of high profile failings in which criminals freedom went on to commit further offenses the mirror highlights a claim by the father of Jack Merritt who was killed in the London Bridge attack that the prime minister saw his son's death not as a tragedy but as an opportunity to score points in the election the sun puts its leader comment on the front page urging readers to back Mr Johnson who it says has the potential to be a great prime minister he also has the zeal to radically improve readers lives the paper adds and we would hold him to it. In New Zealand the Dominion Post says the volcano eruption which killed 6 people is the latest in a series of accidents at some of the country's tourist attractions in recent years the paper's lead a column says that even so soon after this latest calamity 2 things are clear one can manage Out of all the risks in New Zealand remains possibly a little too complacent about them it urges readers to keep in mind that many tourists are drawn to New Zealand because its natural beauty and inherent risks come a close quarters without the suffocating bureaucracy of other countries but it adds we must balance that with preserving the country's reputation as relatively safe from the papers removed to business the United States Canada and Mexico have finally reached a new trade deal to replace their previous agreement the details from outward. Things it's taken 2 years of league Oshea sion to get to this point when representatives of the 3 North American countries could sign the new Us m.c.a. Documents although lawmakers will still need to ratify it the deal is an update and modernization of the North American Free Trade Agreement or NAFTA that's 25 years old president trying will probably take this is a victory but in reality there are actually few changes staying with trade and the director general of the World Trade Organization Roberto Azevedo says the collapse of its appeal system is a big blow which will take months to fix the double. Is highest court can no longer function because the United States has blocks the appointment of new judges Professor Jennifer Hillman used to be a w t o appeals judge it's a very sad day and I think it's very unfortunate that the United States has been very clear about its concerns and its criticisms of the appellate body and very silent when it comes to proposing any solutions. Radio 4 it's time for prayer for the day with the Reverend Dr Calvin t. Samuel Good morning I grew up in Antigua in a highly political household my father was 1st elected as an m.p. That when I was 70 years old and he remained in public life until his death my father was not always politically successful he stood for office in 7 successive elections I was elected in Fife in only one of those His final election 28 years after his 1st was he elected to government he spent most of his political career as a member of her majesty's loyal opposition My father was a man of faith he spent his life trying hard to make a difference with little interest in power. There are many politicians who want to make a difference and work incredibly hard within an imperfect political system to do so or elections run the risk of dividing the electorate into competing camps those who are for and those against normal as the task before the electorate is not one off competition but a shared partnership because the outcome of any general election is of national significance today we remember those who will be working hard on this last day of campaigning and preparing for tomorrow's elections most of all got we pray for tomorrow's general elections but polling may be efficiently conducted with openness transparency and in a spirit of partnership to help us to respond to each other with dignity and respect despite political differences free us from cynicism and unrealistic expectations and inspire us to work together towards the common good. That. Was the Reverend Dr Calvin to you. B.b.c. You can have this one. Here we are this is chalky this is some of our easier ground and I expect if we go 10 yards in it you'll see how. This is this is the free draining chalk allegedly. Sticking to my boots what she got in here so this is going to body this is our 1st planted as you can see it's up and it's probably got to leaves on it now and it'll be fine the week however that we've put in in the last week or 2 we just won't see it until the new year and then probably not until February we then got the something issue we've got slugs we have been able to roll anything pressures there's a bunch of rocks pulling up seed as well so it's not done and dusted once it's in the ground we saw a long way to go. When would you normally plant and when have you planted this year our ideal drilling date would be about the 10th of October with our normal kit we're on we can drill Turner acres a day so probably take 2 weeks and we would be all drilled up by 24th of October this year we started in about the 24th of October and we were still drilling yesterday and we have $25.00 acres have to go so I'm not finished initial No no not finish we have actually rather perversely we've gone the other way we've put an extra couple of 100 acres of wheat in because nationally there's a massive shortage of wheat because of the weather you're looking at huge Arab Spring Valley being planted there for the spring body prices come under pressure and it's in this falling down the wheat prices actually going up because of the shortage of wheat therefore it sort of made sense to plan a bit more wheat but time will tell because we've never done it this late but they were that's the plan. But it got the track because it will be very very wet up here so let's go get the truck like. Ok so this is a weaving drill just a simple time drill we went for this because we'd made all the seed beds then the rains came and basically the seed beds just got compact and so. So by putting a tie in July underneath it we were able to lift the seat belts and put our seat in so essentially you have had to buy new machinery cope with how wet everything is yeah this is been the only way we've been able to plant this year so that's what we've done and have you have in it this what we've had some pretty work times I don't think we've had this intensity of rain my father kept rainfall records for 30 odd years and between 1989 when he started and 2000 we had an inch of rain recorded 3 times in a 24 hour period this autumn we had an inch of rain in a 24 hour period 6 times so you know that's a huge huge difference there late planting Presumably that means layoff based nature has a an amazing way of compensating so it will be a little bit later probably but we're months late drilling and it won't be months late to harvest and is it likely to affect the yield Yes I'm budgeting on a 20 percent reduction in yield center on the wheat so we're planting now. People might say oh farmers are always moaning about the weather but it's you know just one of those things where my father annoys takes the mickey out of me for weeks complaining about the weather but I had a great mate of mine are we talking about the weather and he said. So you're meaning to tell me that your entire income is based on the weather in this country and I said Yeah he said we have got it set and here and it's pretty true but this is what we do. Report from Rebecca Rooney Now this will either fascinate you all make your skin crawl did you know that came richer is home to one of the biggest insect farms in the u k Mark Field nutrition based. Of crickets locusts and roaches for reptile food it's a multi 1000000 pound industry but some think in future they could also contribute to human diets as Livia Kremlin reports. So small it would be silly and moves the larger breeders out they make it easy to create that many believe that insects could solve the food crisis of the future some say the way we currently farm and consume protein is unsustainable and insects could be an alternative because of how quickly they can be bred in the low impact conditions they thrive in Joe Wise and his dad started monk fields from 30 years ago after they couldn't find enough insects to feed the reptiles and their pet shop now he's managing director of a finely tuned high tech insect farm the produces $16000000.00 crickets and locusts a month for the reptile market the arguments for protein sustainable protein ready to stack up and this and scary facts about Haiti's shortages in the future is the demand for very seen increases across the world say hopefully unsafe will play a strong part in helping to alleviate some of the shortage of Joe's colleague Peter Morris who is in charge of operations that Monk field gave me a little tour of the facilities the buildings of hoodies gold building involved Reid and so we have to create the rise environments in the trades each species of insects we breed and launch a different environment and this is one of our of growing on me and Monk fields are ahead of the game but there are many challenges for those who want to farm insects for human and animal consumption Mark Ramsden is an insect expert at ages farming Association Those who is a huge part of it legislation around food production but at the moment there's nothing really set up with insects in mind the 2nd challenge is around scale of production so it's one thing to produce a small number of insects and get the systems working but it's another to produce the tonnes that needed technology is also at the heart of the approach of Cambridge based startup and tonics Biosystems who working with the black soldier fly Amy Charbonneau told me how the flies could be used by farmers and consumers alike these are the lobby of the Flies So the markets I'm way using these guys to eat up all of our organic waste and then we can use the larvae themselves as and I'm no more faith. Allowing vehicles to travel across to a major raid since the Lake District is causing consternation for walkers but the lanes in little Langdale are designated as on surface county roads and by law they calls are allowed along them the Lake District National Park Authority has refused to stop the theater calls with a traffic regulation order because their evidence isn't clear enough to warrant that they've come to this decision despite receiving a letter from the International Council on monuments and sites that's the body that advises UNESCO on protecting World Heritage sites it said the impact of these vehicles is not limited to the material aspects of the roads and their erosion but also on the character and tranquility of the landscape the National Trust also expressed their disappointment with the decision or now the Green Lanes environmental action movement or gleam is taking legal action against the Park Authority and the case could go to the High Court in a moment we'll hear from the authority But 1st Michael Bell fall amuse the national chair of clean told me why they want the vehicle stopped it makes beautiful places are Glee it disturbs the farmers who have got to use those tracks to go about their business I mean one of the high till both way the track leaves the tarmac road through the farmyard of high to all before 8 farm Now imagine you're trying to sort out a floor of restless herd Wicks and waiting at the gate to get into the farm yard is half a dozen 4 by fours or a dozen motorbikes revving up until you know over waiting to get through your farmyard to go on to the track that lies beyond it you can see that you're farming practices compromise it makes it extremely difficult and the tenant of high toll booth weight farm decided he'd had enough and surrendered his tenancy bank to the National Trust to reach. Landlords So why do you want the national park there the Lake District National Park Authority to implementing traffic regulation orders well because the fundamental overriding statutory purpose of national parks this is a statute this is not something they can pick and choose their statutory obligation is to protect and enhance the landscapes in their care that's what national parks are for and that's what the job of the national party of 30 years thing is that the park is for everyone isn't it and we know so many of us have walked through that landscape and absolutely loved it why not allow people who want vehicular access to use those routes which they are legally allowed to do because it's a very precious landscape it's very beautiful and use by vehicles makes them unduly Michael Bartholomew from Gleann I asked Mark Echols head of park management to the Lake District National Park Authority why they aren't implementing traffic regulation orders to stop the vehicles what we did was carry out an extensive project to look at the condition of the roads the levels of use the impacts of motor vehicle use in the area and assess whether a lot the criteria that have to be met to impose a traffic regulation order had been matter not so over nearly 2 years we carried out maintenance work we carried out interviews data logging a vehicle movement interviewed people inside talked to local people and from the information there was not sufficient evidence to justify a traffic regulation order but what we are doing is putting together a collaborative group of interested people to. Continue to monitor the situation gather more evidence and then review if the maintenance work the levels of use are sort church that a traffic regulation order is necessary in the future I suppose for walkers some people who are using the land to walk on paths nearby that actually what they really just don't want is vehicles going across a very very beautiful landscape with noise and motorbikes going up and down as well and they just don't want them there really and again this is individuals perception beliefs in what national parks are for the National Park as you know a very historic traditional Access Network made up of public sealed such as the arrows the Bay Road and these are classified county roads some of which cover a non-sale surface there's 4 past bridleways by ways it's a fantastic a set for people from all over the country and abroad to come and enjoy the national park it's people's right of access to the countryside I think what we've got to think about is that there are over 3200 kilometers of old sail paths of which this road is no more than 3 kilometers so to put it into perspective it's important that people can exercise their rights but equally it's important where we know there's an impact there's money interventions some of that is just maintenance some of that is encouraging people to act responsibly be aware of their rights behave sensibly and in of the places where there was genuine issues that cannot be resolved through money judgment interventions encouraging behaviors in a voluntary restraint if that doesn't work if the evidence is there we can impose traffic regulation orders we have actually post. If it regulation orders on all the unsealed roads in the national park were the evidence showing that it's necessary Mark had calls from the Lake District National Park Authority that's all for us this morning I'm a hill the producer in Bristol is pétrus Fenton. B.b.c. Radio 4th Street of the day with Debbie Payne of the slim rich wetland center on the marsh area. So the marsh area symbolizes hope and joy for me it symbolizes hope because when I was a young bird watcher in the 1970 s. And early eighty's there were hardly any in the cage. And they symbolize joy for me because when I go out in the spring I listen for that really high pitch core up in the sky and they'll be a male March hare up there so high you can barely pick it up even with binoculars and they then tumble through the sky like a falling leaf all the way down to the reed bed in a wonderful display flight and it is this fantastic switchback just before they get down to the nest like. I actually remember a distinct moment when I saw Mark Harris which was in 2000 so they'd only just come back to Cambridge here in any numbers then and had a local reserve and went out one evening and the young had just fledged And it's unusual for a parrot have 5 young we had 5 young sitting at the edge of a reed bed together and that was absolutely magical. You just see the dark chocolate Yun just sitting there kind of not really being able to fly particularly well flying around a little bit and then in a very awkward way landing in the bushes at the side of the really bad but it was an absolutely wonderful moment to see a bird that only just you know really started to come back having so many young and all my local patch. It's 6 o'clock on Wednesday the 11th of December Good morning this is today with Michelle Hussein and Martha Carney the headlines this morning set to make a frantic final push for votes on the last day of campaigning for the general election we joined Jeremy Corbyn on a visit to activists in Cumbria and ask voters what they make of him he's my hero and I'll be voting for him I was one of the disillusioned What's the difference in labor and anybody else and when he came along you do it's insane from a principled stance that I completely agree with no thank you have to be there or the saying It's not my cup it's a man cannot thank me man was defective leader Aung San Suu Kyi She will speak at the UN's highest court today to defend her country against allegations of genocide and as our unsought can brings Harper lead to the London stage we asked the West Wing creator about the current White House people try to figure out how this happened how we elected such a plainly unqualified Dalt I am convinced that it is simply that Donald Trump is an excellent stick with which to poke liberals in the eye the b.b.c. News is read by Chris Aldridge party leaders are preparing to make their final pitch to voters on the last day of campaigning for the general election but leaders will push their key messages ahead of tomorrow's poll which has been described by Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbin as the most important for a generation Here's our political correspondent Ben Wright both Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbin a promising to radically change the way the country is run for the Tories That means ensuring Britain leaves the e.u. At the end of January Boris Johnson said another hung parliament would mean more division delay and deadlock Jeremy Corbyn will tell a rally later that the richest and big business would pay for many of his party's spending. Mss and the Labor leader will keep the n.h.s. At the center of his pitch in her final speech of the election the Liberal Democrat leader Joseph Wilson will say that to stop breaks it voters must stop Boris Johnson getting a majority Meanwhile in an open letter to Scottish voters Nicolas Sturgeon said the s.n.p. Would the only party in Scotland able to lock Boris Johnson out of Downing Street the B.B.C.'s opinion poll tracker suggests the conservatives retain a solid lead over labor in the final week of the campaign a yuga of Pope published last night suggests the Tories are on course for a majority of around $28.00 seats that's 40 seats fewer than the same organization projected nearly a fortnight ago the researches say the wide margin of error means they cannot rule out either a hung parliament or large a conservative majority the poll is based on interviews with about 100000 people during the past week the de facto leader and son Suchi is expected to reject accusations of genocide when she gives evidence to the UN's highest court this morning the International Court of Justice is considering claims that the Myanmar military targeted range of Muslims during a brutal crackdown 2 years ago and Mark are respondent big reports from The Hague where the court is based its thought that Aung San Suu Kyi will argue that the so-called clearance operation carried out by Myanmar's army 2 years ago was a legitimate response to a grave terrorist threat but she may struggle to convince the International Court of Justice range of militants killed 13 members of the country so.

News. You're listening to the newsroom from the b.b.c. World Service with Major General President Trump is already under intense pressure as an impeachment inquiry against him gathers steam but he's also facing increasing criticism for withdrawing u.s. Forces from northern Syria from normally loyal allies as well as the Democrats in a rare bipartisan rebuke the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to formally condemn his decision with more than 100 Republicans joining forces with Democrats Despite this Mr Trump continue to try to justify a move that is widely regarded as having given Turkey the green light to invade Syria it's a very semi complicated not too complicated if you're smart but it's a semi complicated problem and I think it's a problem that we have very nicely under control but even allies like Republican Senator Lindsey Graham not buying that explanation he said Mr Trump's decision had forced Syrian Kurds who helped the u.s. Defeat so-called Islamic state to turn to America's enemies with grave repercussions for the region he's making the biggest mistake of his presidency by assuming the Kurds are better off today than they were yesterday that is just unbelievable I can imagine if Obama said that what Republicans would be saying Now some want to say that that is just unfair dangerous and quite frankly is dishonorable for us to abandon the Kurds Well shortly after the vote in Congress senior Democrats walked out of a meeting at the White House accusing Mr Trump of insulting the House speaker Nancy Pelosi by calling her a 3rd rate politician she said he'd had a melt them I think that both the size that the more than 2 to one of the Republicans voted to oppose when the president probably got to the president because he was 2nd. And that's why we couldn't continue in the morning because it was just not relating to the reality that our North America Correspondent Peter Bowes told me more the president is under tremendous pressure I think we've just heard about this bad tempered meeting he had with the Democrats he also seems to be particularly angry about the much heard accusation that he gave Turkey the green light to launch its offensive in Syria Mr Trump has denied that in the last few hours we've had the release of a letter that he wrote to President early one of Turkey before the offensive started and the letter has language which I think it's fair to say is unusual between world leaders Mr Trump urges President want to work out a good deal he also says history will look upon you favorably if you get this done the right and humane way it will look upon you forever as the devil if good things don't happen he says don't be a tough guy don't be a fool and that vote in the House of Representatives how much of a blow was it for Mr Trump given that it was largely symbolic Well it was a significant defeat bipartisan condemnation of his decision over u.s. Forces in Syria Republicans and Democrats opposing the president voters 354267 really isn't an exaggeration to say there is a tremendous amount of opposition to what the president has described earlier in the day as a strategically brilliant decision this resolution as you say is largely symbolic but it puts on the record the view of the majority of members of the House of Representatives that they see this as a move which is beneficial to adverse rays of the United States including Russia Syria and Iran perhaps saying the president is losing support of some of his own party and at the same time he's sending his vice president and his secretary of state to Turkey to try to persuade Mr Erdogan the Turkish president. To abandon his offensive but that's going to be a very tough task yes they're on their way now supposedly to try to persuade Turkey's president and want to call a Ceasefire what is difficult to grasp about this is that President Trump has endorsed this mission but he said earlier that Turkey's incursion into Syria is not our border and that the Us isn't a policing agent so there is a question over well why get involved in negotiations why should America be involved in trying to get a ceasefire Peterboro Catalan protesters seeking independence from Spain have clashed again with police in Barcelona they're angry at the long prison sentences given to 9 Catalan leaders who led a failed attempt to break away from Spain the president of Catalonia has called for an immediate halt to the violence Damien come Atticus is in Barcelona and sent us this report on Wednesday's violence. Catalan anger was for the 3rd day in a row was their target was the interior ministry. Protesters dumped piles of toilet roll to signal their discussed at the all 30 was when they threatened to break through the barriers was nice patience now but. Riot officers drove the crowds back was that had been perhaps 10000 on the streets may be able. To impose have been boiling here all week was fury at the jail sentences Spain handed down on Monday 9 cattle and political leaders imprisoned for up to 13 years he was organizing the failed independence bid for the region 2 years ago but every time the police move forward to try to take back a bit more in the streets the protest has go. Push boundaries you know releasing using their baton rounds their riot control weapons in the protesters are responding with their bottles and stones and fireworks the anger on the streets doesn't seem to be subsiding was was. That the protesters improvising shields from skateboards set fires on the streets. For their bed jailed leaders a political prism of us but not everyone agrees with their tough. Pacifists she shouts from the balcony was Spain's government has said it will deal with this arm rest firmly I was with these old the only protests there are more in other cities in Catalonia demonstrators a mulching on Barcelona from around the region was that a general strike is planned for Friday. Damian Grammaticus reporting the British prime minister Boris Johnson had been hoping to arrive in Brussels this morning for an e.u. Summit to sign off on a Brics it deal with 27 other European leaders however intensive talks between British and a unique his on Wednesday failed to deliver an agreement despite positive signals that one was close to being nailed down there's a great deal of secrecy around the negotiations and the talks remain on a knife edge but it's thought almost all outstanding issues have been overcome the sticking point which is preventing a breakthrough appears to be the position of the de u.p. a Party from Northern Ireland which Mr Johnston needs if he has any chance of getting a deal for the British parliament as Unionists they fear that in order to the liver deliver breaks it Northern Ireland will have to adopt rules which differ from mainland Britain so as to avoid checks on goods crossing the border. On the island of Ireland our correspondent Chris what has the latest Well there's a very clear account kill ation if the prime minister doesn't have the d.p. He does not have a safe parliamentary route if he manages to get a deal now it's interesting I was talking to ministers who know the d.p. Has been to Putin to talk to them and they are picking up a very very easy mood among impression is that the deal is concerned about the 3 issues that have been associated with them a concern about the 1st are those customs checks between Northern Ireland and Great Britain the 2nd is the consent that Northern Ireland would have to that and in the 3rd place concerns about being not wholly part of the u.k. V 18 regime because they would be following in some ways the Customs Union in Northern Ireland and I have to say the sort of mood music I'm hearing from the d.p. Tonight is they're saying there's too much enthusiasm around people should not get so carried away and it would be wrong to assume that the d. U.p.a. Is automatically going to sign up to a deal if there is a deal the mood sort of on picking up among some in Number 10 is that the deep never want to own a solution you are venturing have to sort of call their bluff and the hope is what the best would be is that they would sulkily acquiesce Nicholas what the marathon is one of the most prestigious events that any and then pick games steeped in history dating back to ancient Greece but the organizers of next year's Games in Japan are fighting to protect it from a very modern phenomenon climate change the threat of stifling temperatures has forced organizers to move the event 800 kilometers north from the capital Tokyo. On the normal most ardent of Hokkaido our reporter Henry Bello told me more well they've come to the realization that this is really the only way that they can have this marathon and protect the well being of the athletes temperatures in Tokyo during the middle of summer can reach up to. 40 degrees and this is something that the i.o.c. Has been worried about for some time now but they really have been hesitant for the last couple of years to move this event from Tokyo and that's because the marathon is really one of the central events that and the Olympics it's the showcase really it's a way that they can try and show off the city of Tokyo to millions of people who are watching they didn't want to move this they even experimented with some things to to try and reduce the stress that would be placed on these runners like starting at 6 am even having things like mist machines that were trying to cool the runners down but they've eventually come to the realisation that even with those measures that's not going to be enough to protect these runners but really what's underlined this is what happened in Doha or the World Athletics Championships that was really described as something of a disaster and that's because in the marathon event people were stretchered off their breaking down under the really intense heat conditions they don't want that to be repeated at the Tokyo Olympics India that they don't that was very controversial what happened in Doha but this event in Japan is being moved hundreds of kilometers away so what's the reaction been from athletes themselves well it's been a relief and not just for the athletes but also for some of the public health bodies have been calling for years for this to be moved and they were worried that people might actually die under these really intense heat conditions that runners wouldn't be able to survive and there were also very critical of some of the decisions from the i.o.c. In recent years to try and get around this somehow measures like I mentioned the mist machines they thought that that was really not putting the wellbeing of these athletes 1st that it was really way to try and save this marathon and keep it in Tokyo so understandably they're quite relieved I mean if you just look at what happened in Tokyo this summer there were something like 50 deaths from this hate so I don't want that to happen and of course for an athlete preparing for a marathon is hard enough if you have that in the back of your head. How am I going to be able to carp if I ran in an event where there was 40 degree heat one have to factor that in the temperatures should be about 5 degrees cooler and of course not something that they really do welcome because they get one shot at this every 4 years 3 passengers who travelled on a British Airways flight which had to make an emergency landing in Valencia in August after the cabin filled with smoke say they're experiencing breathing difficulties 2 months on be a says for legal reasons it can't comment on what caused the incident until a Spanish air accident investigation is complete Tom Barrett reports British Airways flight $42.00 was approaching Valencia airport on August the 5th when thick smoke spilled into the cabin 2 months on and 3 passengers say they're still experiencing breathing difficulties 2 of them have been referred by their G.P.'s to respect she specialists including Gail Fitzpatrick from Glasgow he says she now gets breathless walking uphill and 14 old women I don't smoke I've never had any health concerns of any type or is whoever so I know that they must be directly attributable to the fly and whether I inhaled the a you breathe on virtually every model of their line or comes in via the engines where it is compressed although it hasn't been confirmed some pilots in cabin crew believe the smoke on the Valencia flights was caused by a few movent a few of empties when oil or other fluids inside the engine leak contaminating the air supply Tom Barrett reporting there. And there we leave the b.b.c. World service to begin our day here on b.b.c. Radio 4 it's half past 5 on Thursday the 17th of October Good morning this is news briefing with Diana speed. Burrs Johnson is travelling to an e.u. Summit in Brussels where BRICs its negotiators are said to be very close to finalizing a new withdrawal deal. The veteran m.p. Dame Louise Ellman has left Labor saying Jeremy Corbyn would be a danger to the country as prime minister and business officials from the summit from the g 20 summit rather discuss the state of the global economy and in Sport England names the team for its quarter final against Australia in the Rugby World Cup. Boris Johnson will attend his 1st e.u. Summit since becoming prime minister hoping that it'll also be his last as he pushes to complete breaks it in 2 weeks' time British and easy negotiators have again worked into the small hours to try to finalize a new withdrawal agreement before the summit begins the president of the European Council Donald Tusk told a Polish television station that the basic foundations of the agreement were ready and as he put it theoretically the deal could be approved today given half staff at the European Parliament's breaks it coordinator who's often criticized British proposals said last night that a lot of now changed has been a fundamental shift more as if we could go before the proposal for Mr Johnson were absolutely unacceptable giving a feature to the deal be to get only one example there has been a fundamental fundamental shift that it would this clear sources close to the talks say the u.k. And the e.u. Have agreed customs arrangements for Northern Ireland and a mechanism to last 2 months to approve the new system but one of the last stumbling block blocks is said to be whether Northern Ireland will stay in the e.u. Zvi 80 regime Boris Johnson has been trying to get story breaks it is on the Democratic Unionist Party to back his revised plan the d.p. Says there are still gaps between the proposals and what the party could support but one of the BRICs it is been a Jenkin doesn't believe Mr Johnson has made too many concessions the prime minister said to M.P.'s that he is going to deliver a substantially different deal from tourism Estill. In a single customs territory of the United Kingdom any alignment of north down regulation with the e.u. Through a mechanism of consent I am tolerably confident that if there is a deal it will be a deal that we could contemplate voting for. The House of Representatives in the United States has voted overwhelmingly to condemn President drums decision to withdraw American forces from northeastern Syria leaving the Kurds to face a Turkish invasion following the vote senior Democrats in Congress held a meeting with the president which erupted into discord with Mr Trump attacking the House speaker Nancy Pelosi as a 3rd grade politician Ms Pelosi said the president had a meltdown the veteran Labor m.p. For Liverpool Riverside Dame Louise Ellman has resigned from the party accusing Jeremy Corbyn of failing to tackle anti semitism in a statement she said Mr Corbin if he became prime minister would be a danger not only to the Jewish community but also to the country Dame Louise who $73.00 described her decision as truly agonizing and said she had to rejoin labor under a different leadership a spokesman for Labor said the party continued to take action to root out anti-Semitism in the party and wider society the labor m.p. Stella Creasy says she is home broken by Dame loses departure Beriah shame but it's come to best I've been proud to work with the way it doesn't mean we always agree on everything but she's been a tremendous asset and to be in a position where yet again another female jewish m.p. Feels no longer welcome in the Labor Party shame to fall and I'm very clear about that and many of us have been saying we've got a problem we have to deal with it we have to have an independent process and we have to recognise and own it because we're supposed to be a party of equality passengers on a British Airways flight to Valencia which filled with smoke mid-air have told the b.b.c. They are still experiencing breathing difficulties 2 months after the incident those affected said they want to know what was in the smoke and if the plane had been maintained properly be a said it was waiting for the outcome of an accident investigation and couldn't comment for legal reasons. Now back with more general weather forecast for his Sarah thanks Diana we've got a slow moving area of low pressure which is going to be with us today and over the next few days keeping our weather pretty unsettled so a real mix of some sunshine but also some blustery at fairly heavy showers and at times some thunderstorms in the forecast now will start off across southern and western parts of the u.k. Closest to the area of low pressure so that's all of southern England Wales northwest England Southwest Scotland and Northern Ireland we've got a few showers here from the word go as we head through today the showers will become more frequent and protecting the soft and heavy a too with some thunder and lightning a hail mixed in the winds also picking up certain time quite breezy gales around the coast I think later on the soft a name but as is the nature with these showers they're going to be hitting mist so there be some sunshine in between and with the strength of the wind I mean moving free quite quickly but temperatures right about 12 to 15 degrees. The eastern England of the Midlands north east England eastern Scotland and Northern Scotland hey we're going to be seeing a dry a day quite a chilly start to the morning in fact temperatures below freezing across parts of Scotland but plenty of sunny dry weather just the odd shower later on the softening and into the ceiling and temperatures around $12.00 to $14.00 degrees we've got more of those heavy showers and it'll be windy in the south again tomorrow thank you time for a look at some of the newspapers and efforts to strike a last minute bricks deal dominate front pages once again the times declares a burst Johnson's fate is in the hands of the d.p. It is only enforced as opposition to the revised deal has emerged as the most significant obstacle and risks dashing the Prime Minister's hopes of avoiding another BRICs it delay but an e.u. Ambassador told the paper that a technical delay was unavoidable even in the best case scenario he said leaders could only approve the political rather than the legal agreement at the summit today because it would take time for lawyers and customs experts to study the legal text. The importance of the d.p. Is also highlighted by the Daily Express The paper says Mr Johnson is desperately trying to convince the party to allow a new customs border across the Irish sea. The Financial Times says the meeting between Mrs Foster and the prime minister on Tuesday evening when she told him she couldn't support his compromise deal was fraught according to the paper aides at number 10 feared the d u p leader would make an intemperate statement awaiting camera crews after she left one of the aides called the d.p. a Bloody nightmare a report in The Guardian says e's negotiator has told ambassadors that under the agreement a regulatory and customs border would be drawn in the Irish Sea However legally Northern Ireland would be in the case custom territory to allow the prime minister to boast that the whole and entire country has left the e.u. Rebate system would be put in place to refund businesses hit by tariffs on goods going between Northern Ireland and the rest of the u.k. . The Daily Telegraph picks up on quotes Mr Johnson who told conservative backbench M.P.'s that breaks it talks were like a scene from the film Shawshank Redemption in which the lead character escapes from a prison after a long crawl through sewage pipes the papers headline says but now we can see the light. And that completes news briefing now it's time for press the day with the writer and broadcaster markdown Good morning some years ago I was asked to present a t.v. Documentary on religious fundamentalism one of our interviewees was the former chief rabbi Lord Sacks who were just published a compelling book entitled The Dignity of Difference his words from our encounter in his north London home to stay with me for more than a decade fundamentalism he said is the attempt to impose a single truth on a plural world and what really lies behind it is fear that makes you feel that when you meet someone who is not like you who doesn't agree with you that that challenges your very being aggression is always a sign of insecurity now this mindset isn't the exclusive preserve of the religious outlook Many's the time in these heady octane few weeks of political dispute that Lord Sacks is words of Harvard in my mind he wasn't by any means the 1st to warn about fractious division and reducing your opponents to 2 dimensional cardboard cutouts support in his letter to the Galatians warned against his tendency to demonize and dehumanizing if you bite and devour each other he said watch out or you will be destroyed by each other any person who does not stop to ponder how the world must look from the vantage point of another lacks empathy and he or she who lacks empathy is as the saying goes a self-made creature who worships his creator a binary world in which I have all truth and you have known is a world which used to my vain and self-serving outlook it is a world as the poet w.b. Yeats said in which the best can lack all conviction and the worst of us can have all passionate intensity creates a God give us tongs that practice the discourse of love and respect and that when needed choose the precious gift of silence that listens. That was prayer for the day with Mark down the radio for farming today with on the Hill good morning it seems consumers have a belief with beef demand fell 14 percent over the summer and the market is now suffering We'll have more on that in just a moment 1st though today all this week we're talking about rural services for many families the key service a rural community needs to keep it alive is a school no school means no young people possibly no future for a community and the small of the school the harder it is for them to survive Cass claim reports now from a small primary school in the Yorkshire Dales that's had to battle for its future. In a good year with Mum this is quite a chocolate box Dale's village with a poll of a community shop it's Ok rescue team and by the very skin of its state is still has a school but only just we literally had no idea whether the school would stay open or not it was on a knife edge and we all assumed that it would probably be a pleasure Maria Farah is one of the school's governors the school had probably been under pressure for some time but it all came to a head in the autumn term of 2018 really it was becoming very hard to see a way forward with finances more than anything it's all about bums on seats and you know in a rural school one child can make a difference how many children were you down to at that stage $27.00 earlier this year North Yorkshire County Council proposed closing the school because of a drop in pupil numbers of financial pressures but the community here had other ideas in crossly is chair of the friends of Clackamas school here you cut 6 weeks from the start of the calculation to the phone decision we made there was a huge reaction we had over 200 responses consultation on a public meeting with h.r. People it was a very strong. If the schools are closed then the lowest in the village to village needs young people living in the Beach California schools a vehicle port when you community if the school had closed it would have been the start of the closure of the village the village would have turned into 1st of all Village Retirement Village and eventually if nothing would have been devastating wouldn't it would have been devastating and the fact of the matter is that young families are coming to live in our village and it's not to do much a village and it is alive and it is bucking the trend almost So we need to keep our school governors parents in the classroom Community Action Group made such a strong case for keeping the school the council changed its mind the decision these parents say was definitely the right world is a focal point for the parents in the village without the school we don't believe in a set it lives in separate hours is it brings people together gets people talking helping each other brings people together as a village what would have meant to you if this school were closed Well it's been terrible we've got special needs and he's being looked after so well and he's learning where past we expect him to do it's a beggar important to take about 20 minutes to get here but also I've Daughtry's over and have been on so at that scale so it's an hour round trip in a morning anyway so if you don't have a local skill like that spend the night best mate especially on days like this but I got a letter you know you talk about. A red day. Plays on your whiteboard write down all the multiples of fall you know the and so with Adam caddy is the head of school here financially like it any school we rely on people numbers one of the challenges that we face is that if one particular family leaves and maybe takes one or 2 children with them that can have quite a significant impact on the school board since it was say this school has been placed in special measures by Oprah's diet some people read that as evidence that a very small school constant you legs. Of the needs of its people I don't believe so no I think the Ofsted report was probably just a result of a gradual decline in standards over time why I will say is that since the Ofsted report we've been able to recruit 2 highly trained fabulous teachers who are doing a brilliant job with the children we've got the schools particularly proud of how far we've come in such a short space of time we use in the Ofsted report as a baseline for improvement how safe is the school now the authority agreed to keep the school open I am here for the forseeable future the teachers are here for the foreseeable future nobody is looking for the school to close. Adam k. Their head teacher at Clapton primary school in the Yorkshire Dales the latest figures show that the Scottish beef heard is it its lowest level since the 1950 s. Total cattle numbers 429000 were 1730000 which is 950000 fewer animals than in 1974 when cattle numbers were at their peak that might sound surprising but be farmers across the whole of the u.k. a Facing low demand and low prices we'll hear more about that in a moment 1st though the Scottish National Party the s.n.p. Has just held its conference in Aberdeen it wants to put a stop to Bracks it's and another referendum on Scottish independence the s.n.p. Has promised farmers it would continue to support payments for farmers until 2024 I asked business energy and industrial strategy spokesperson Drew Hendry about their vision for farming as usual we've gone through much further to protect our economy and farming is a key part of our economy that's why we promise funding stability to 2024 that's also why you let the cat farming payments have been paid in Scotland 2 months ahead of the e.u. Showed you will a $98.00 some 99 percent of them already paid you know that's why we're going the extra mile to make sure that farming is protected. If there were direct payments then continuing beyond that I presume that some farmers in Scotland who farm on particularly difficult land and have a particularly difficult time would welcome a continuation of direct payments I'm sure they would you know it's it's a difficult job and particularly will farming and and indeed and I want farming as well the challenges are even greater than in the way the really is where there are perhaps better overall connectivity to the market so I would come as no surprise that farmers are belittling for that kind of support The more importantly than that we still see and every person in the farming industry that I've spoken to is the Lapsley convinced that being able to stay in the European Union the single market Customs Union is the best thing possible for farming that's why we're committed to giving that choice the people in the future. What about the future of the beef industry in a moment we'll be hearing about the f or a select committee of M.P.'s hearing about low demand and low prices we also hear that the beef herd in Scotland is an all time low since the 1950 s. An actual number of cattle walked all the pressures on the Scottish beef industry Well I think there are a lot of pressures but there's also a lot of opportunity one of the great things about Scottish beef is the world renowned quality that farmers are able to produce because of the methods they use in terms of raising the cattle why support an industry when Demond is dropping there was a massive drop over the summer of about 14 percent in demand for beef Mike his actions he's a real economy and many people rely on the farming and other types of farming for their livelihoods there you know as I've said I think the both the challenge of the massive opportunity because we know already exists is to promote the quality of Scotch beef and to make sure that you know we're accessing as much of the markets as we can in the e.u. Of course primarily and to to put our shoulder to the be able to make sure that port an industry remains viable now if it is shrinking it is shrinking that's just the fact of the matter what we must do is make sure that those people who are involved in that industry at the moment are supported as best they can. Hendry there from the s.n.p. Will more details about the challenges facing the U.K.'s beef industry were revealed yesterday when the Environment Food and Rural Affairs committee of M.P.'s heard evidence from farmers and processes the M.P.'s heard how demand for b. Fell significantly over the summer leaving a backlog of supply and the price paid to farmers has fallen but at the same time the price consumers pay in the shops has only just started to change 3 months later Tom Cowen managing director at Avatar operator a b p told the Africa Miti how he thought the beef market was operating we had to assist a substantial change in consumer behavior when we released for summer of 29 every year we changed from winter into summer in 3 states get more shows with purpose groups get more some space food. And we have still forecast to be figures will tell you 1415 percent decrease in the market that was basically consumers switching and we've never seen a change to the level they switched in $29.00 this which out of beef some of them the biggest which 'd was to fish right some of the saw to 99 is the reef or 2 piece the salmon for center that's with the exception of 5 you saw at that stage we lost consumers who were losing consumers during the summer and we also have to contend with serious price in terms of really having a go at the top of the meat industry and we have a job of work to do to reverse that and put maybe a different perspective on the listing to that was Professor David Hughes emeritus professor of food marketing at Imperial College London he's travelling at the moment in Bangkok I asked him why beef consumption was falling. Consumption odd. Capita basis is stable static or declining in many countries across Europe not in the u.s. By the way words continue to go up why might that be 1st of all because b. Is relatively expensive even the pharmacy might not think so but from a new one if you look at the verses price of chicken price Paulk to some extent prices really cheap fish secondly that it hasn't gone well with regard to the media perception that red meat which b.p. Is one is not going to help actually that one of the bigger drivers so they're not with. The u.k. Certainly some consumers have this other environmental concern and again that reflects the press that concerns me that there's a perception but we have in the u.k. The service of the big system is in the u.s. Clearly we haven't been out of luck this and it's grasp at 1st and it all of course is an interesting other normally protein offer in the stores which doesn't only appear to legendary and they also appear to like to Terence those that want to maybe have something different than meat every now and again however let's not panic because globally demand to me is increasing and it's increasing for the we'll talk about loss in just a moment this one point that the M.P.'s seem to be surprised about and that was the didn't they between the reduction in the price to the Foma and the drop in price to conceal missed that there was a 3 month delay is someone making money out of that. Or recover in the nick I know not what's to become honest but let's not we should be surprised because it reflects what is normal behavior in the market place when prices drop it takes a while about to be pushed into the supermarket shelf Let's go back to the other reasons about the drop in price and the possibility in facts of course post ranks in it that they could be a market for u.k. Beef outside the u.k. Which might grow so should the beef industry in the u.k. Be looking further afield Yes it should but it's not without its challenges you know we have not being aggressively out there in the global market why not because we have general pretty good pocket at home back of the matter is created and. Then you know we're short of the shoulder with very tough competitors can we go that where we have been it takes time we heard recently that the Scottish beef herd is it is lowest number since the 1950s do you expect the u.k. Beef herd to do window. Things like everybody else I'm wondering are going to happen in the next over the next 2 or 3 weeks you know what I like to say and just to repeat I think very best market. Opportunity to expand at home Professor David Hughes there speaking to me from Bangkok and that's all the beef for today I'm on a hill the produce from Bristol is Toby field. Tweet of the day Miranda Kristof Nicole presents the Cormorant. At the cooler and Colony noisy chicks are being fed and I go on a street next. To most of us because sick image of a comber int is of a large sea bird posing with wings outstretched in her posture on a wave washed rock we think of them as somebody all black birds but in the breeding season Qumran have white patches and silvery feathers cool file and play rooms on their heads which a close range make them look rather dashing. Although cooler it's a common on rocky shores increasingly they're breeding inland in tree colonies where branches white and by their droppings are a giveaway sign in summer. This is probably in response to reduced persecution often you'll see them flying high up the river gliding occasionally as they survey the landscape or even balanced bizarrely on high tension cables and looking completely out of place. In the water they tend nimble swimmers and adept at pursuing and catching fish a habit which often puts them a Towards with anglers. In winter Camarines gather in dramatic reefs often in waterside trees sometimes involving hundreds of birds a wonderful spectacle. On f.m. On longwave and on digital radio this is b.b.c. Radio 4. Leaders will gather in Brussels hoping for history but bracing for bumps in the road there were rumors yesterday that the process was almost complete but that complications in London negotiations the Westminster had held things up the bridge that representative of the e.u. Parliament gave a half doubt that it was possible that a deal could be done at this summit and in the progress had been made possible because. Boris Johnson who'd given ground the Irish prime minister of Iraq has said that if things can't be completed in the coming 2 days then leaders could gather again before the end of the month efforts continue to get the support of the d.p. For any agreement the prime minister knows he will struggle to get a break deal through the.

Of course for West Bromwich aged he set to go against Jeremy Corbyn by arguing the party must but remain and campaign for another referendum before a general election so everyone waking up to the morning will be wondering could this actually happen over top political reporter right ma'am only rob someone to be coming to actually main Well Tom Watson essentially is saying Labor needs to pry. Ty's reversing brags it through another referendum so he's going to say later on there's no such thing as a good brags deal and that Labor must campaign unequivocally to remain and you know as you say this puts an Olds with Jeremy Corbyn who says Labor needs to offer voters both leave and remain options so following meetings with trade union leaders on Tuesday Labour's leader promised a further referendum on Bragg's it with a credible leave option versus remain if his party wins the next general election here it's germy call been speaking at the T.C. Conference in Brighton we're ready for that. Ready to unleash the biggest people powered campaign we've ever seen in this country and in this movement and in that election we will commit to a public vote with a credible option to leave and the option to remain No this obviously this has been leaked to the speech by Tom Watson So what kind of reaction as you've already got yet. If you switch on any sort of television or news this morning you will see a picture of the West Bromwich East M.P. Interest me his constituency of course very good overwhelmingly to leave the European Union mark so Walker is from the Public and Commercial Services Union he says these remarks are going to be pretty divisive it's a huge gamble and it's a gamble with the future of this country because it's an all or nothing binary choice that I think is completely wrong and perpetuates the divide that we've seen for the last 3 years and I think Tom Watson would agree with the entire trade union movement and no deal brags it is absolutely calamitous and nobody voted for it Labor's voted twice against Boris Johnson's plans for an election at an early general election of course and the party leadership in Germany Corbin's insisted It is eager for an election to happen but they want to wait until after October 31st they hope no deal BRACKS It's been ruled out but this will put a cat amongst the pigeons. Somewhat today I would think what matters already texting made it to react to that saying Tom Watson is facing Dick's election by his own party just saying that's my think is going to happen so Rob An extraordinary story that you've uncovered delight the cancer in Sam while he's told B.B.C. W.N. That he's faced a campaign of bullying and Harris Mintz from his own party Giles says that he's lived with months of baseless allegations and threats of suspension because he didn't want to vote for the National Party's preferred candidate to become the leader of Sam while cancel He told he told this program the campaign against him comes from the top of the party and now he wants answers so Rob you've been speaking to cancel or Giles Yeah that's right been chatting to him for a wise been thinking pretty long and hard about speaking out about this this all relates to a leadership election at Central Council happened back in the New Year around February time and because Labor holds 70 of the 72 seats there as a party there fecht really get to choose the leader of the council there were 2 candidates and council Luke Giles who's represented when's bring north since May in $2800.00 hadn't made his mind up which way to vote but he says he came under severe pressure to vote a certain way for Yvonne Davis who actually lost that election but did subsequently become the leader now councillor Giles says he was told by a senior trade union figure to vote for Yvonne Davis and then in very certain terms was told it was what Jenny Formby wanted now Jenny for me as the general secretary of the Labor Party a very senior figure and council just wasn't happy about someone from outside Sandwell trying to make decisions about who should be running things locally. Jenny if she was in there she doesn't know the running of Central Council she doesn't know what's best for the people of Sandra. And she doesn't know is going to deliver the best we do on the ground because we're there we seen every day pressure put on me from trade unions as well kept on telling me that the National Party wanted Yvonne Jenny for me wanted Yvonne obviously our then said No I couldn't vote for Yvonne I felt that Steve was the best candidate and there are me having a phone call there was a mouse going to the party trying to get me suspended and obviously been attacked on social media for thing since what's been leaked from the party so councilor Giles says he wants to make his own mind up and suddenly found himself being threatened with suspension that's right now you know pressure to vote a certain way or Turk take a certain line happens within political party as you have you know certain factions within a party which will vote a certain way you might be promised a more senior position in a ministration Xchange for your support for example because it just says that this went way above what could reasonably be expected in in fact became a campaign of bullying and harassment he says there were threats made around financial donations with the implication that he done something wrong but he says he's never been given any evidence of any wrongdoing all donations do not come to me they go to the party they go to the branch they don't come to me as an individual and all because money sent to my branch that we never spent in the election because there's only so much you can spend that money never got touched but. I mean let's face it they just try to find any think in anything to try and get to me and they didn't find anything now they Party responded I believe to say that it just seemed like somebody's got it in for me. Which says a lot really comply and then and at that present time the regional director was in agreement with me that I see. Like a rash meant Bulleen. Are complying back then and then obviously after they stop and put in over complying on the back of the. Whited a number of months at a response that somebody did been assigned to the investigation. But never heard of anybody and it put a lot of pressure on the Family Law. Court I mean quite a lot of this getting stressed and she was heavily pregnant at the time. The party sent number of a mouse chasing them. In the queue you'll get there we when he gets there we've so love pressure Rob what sort of a fact is this had on him. Joel says it's had a huge impact on him he says even though he knows himself deep down he says you know I've done nothing wrong but it was really difficult to have you know people trying to side doubts in his mind basically and as you heard there he said it affected his family practice healthy has been left wanting answers from the Labor Party about why it happened and why he says is it acceptable to bully and harass a democratically elected councillor whose 1st job is to serve his constituents and not what his party leadership want to quote setting specially when you've got. I mean I've got 2 children there. When you want to do what's best for your family you know in that perhaps war you get involved because you have a family you open your eyes a little bit and you want to do what's best for the people and the children growing up when you want to leave stuff you know in a good place for them and that's where I got more active because I felt like I could make a difference not for Mary for the generations to come after. But when stuff like this up in the search it only puts a lot of pressure on your family especially when you speak to people who are in the Live party at the time this is up in all the SES I think you need to seek legal advice just play with your mind. You know when I spoke to the doctor because I want to sleep in. It upset you any it froze you because you start questioning everything whenever changed to be a counselor in when's we know meant a lot to me and for this to happen I cannot help but not look at the part of the saying now Iraq this isn't the 1st time that there have been accusations of bullying within the Labor Party in some while what I had to say about saying so Sam The reason this leadership election was happening in the 1st place was because the previous leader stepped down after being suspended by the party and he denied any wrongdoing at the time Steve wheeling said he'd been stabbed in the back one of his senior colleagues Richard Marshall was found to have breached the council's code of conduct over text messages sent to a blogger about a female colleague a council investigation said that did amount to bullying that he claimed he'd been made a scapegoat he's not a counselor anymore we approached a live Party going to read word for word what they said so a West Midlands labor source said so not a named statement this is the 1st we've heard of these allegations as no complaint has been submitted to the party we can only investigate complaints. Received the general secretary does not endorse or support candidates in labor group elections and it's completely false to claim the regional director attempted to influence the result jobs completely disagrees with everything they've said I think probably more to come on that's over the next few weeks brilliant continue to follow the story. Of course that we more on the Tom Watson situation as well also in the news bulletins Thanks Rob. Travels for the West Midlands on B.B.C. W N 95.6 a horrible morning on the M 6 Here's Jason Johnson. Yeah that's right does if you're travelling on the M 6 at the moment you'll find the queues going north Banda from just after junction 10 A at the M 54 it's because the main carriageway between 12 and 13 is completely shut both north and south because of an accident earlier on in the early hours of this morning involving a low rate. From junction 10 A It also means delays on the I 5 along to Gail and then the A 449 from 4 Ashes up through Penn Krege back up towards the M 6 at Stafford that's heavily congested as that is the route the traffic is diverting along the rest of the motorways they're not doing too badly at the moment a little busy on the M $42.00 northbound around junction 3. Summit there's a lovely tweet from Stephen Fry very. Nice as well. Been he's been in Birmingham Symphony Hall of course doesn't I interviewed him a couple of weeks ago and yes he's I can't find the tweet now but he's been in Birmingham He's been walking down the canal from Birmingham City Center does. Wonders of modern technology so he says he's posted a couple of photos and some statement for I am right in the middle of a modern bustling jangling city then in moments you walking from Mars along the green. Fringe canal watching herons catching breath 1st time burning which is absolutely looked at from statement. The Tom Watson story which we brought you to the top of the show you know a lot of the newspapers this morning that he's actually it he's he's at loggerheads with Jeremy calling Tom Watson calling for a referendum before the general elections that's not the paper's England's victory against Kosovo last night 53 calls me with a cat of the day I 2nd it thanks to the cost of I scored in the 1st minute of thought I've got to tell you I would not get ready for bed I seem to be on the blink of an Eye Candy Crowley one so missed almost all the goals the midwife I only left on the papers this morning I'm sure a few people will be keeping it in time on and off the ground for that now and Ross Kemp Oh Rolf says he won't rule out a return to the soap but not extend this he was in Emmerdale. The 55 year old actor is best known for playing ground Mitchell in East Enders But in 1960 paid in $22.00 episodes Graham Lotz worth and he said I would never rule out a return to East Enders or return to Emma dial far less is still going to wait still told it that's. One of the thing for now as well I don't think you'll be listening yet and I need your advice on the line it's my dad's birthday today that she died that So yesterday because I couldn't be enough time can be bothered probably remember if we made a cake so went to a well known supermarket with me 2 year old let's choose a birthday cake for grandpa so I need do you think an adult would be offended at being given a colleen but. I think any adult any human being would be delighted to get Caterpillar Well goodnight because we were in that you're all to well I thought one calling the caterpillar and I said no that we don't we don't have to grandpa and he was having the time. Tremendous stampin it's very scary for a quiet life for today and it could have been worse because the 1st one when he was . So diverse like he doesn't recall in the caterpillar cake a little bit later on this morning now this isn't the easiest topic to bring up at breakfast time but it's pretty interesting so stick with it because we found out about a new white 7th friend is dealing with all the waste from 1700000 residents across perming and the Black Country yet the mineral treatment plant is importing box from Brazil and we are hot says the project manager 7 trying to tell us more about how this actually works so what does this process actually involve Elliot's morning sun morning. So just to put it in a nutshell it involves biomass about the shape of the pay the size and basically they can which is $1.00 of the main like components that we want to remove from waste water and they convert that into nitrogen and process pretty much strips and only out of the waste water that comes down the stairs which is one of the main you know things they want to do you want to say which were so how dangerous is a money a. Dangerous fish and any of the biodiversity in the river so at the end of the sewage treatment process the waste water is clean and it's discharge and. So if it did contain ammonia it would be harmful to station harmful to any kind of plantation and so it's one of the main components that is present in wastewater that we can you know really it's really important we we we removed from that from not yet in coming incident and it sounds like a so great why of removing the amount Yeah how are you removing at the moment. Well in a more traditional way involves more conventional talk about. And it takes a lot more energy to do it take twice not a time take twice you know. Of a ration. Ration of those. You know into the village quit this process basically require that 50 percent of that so. It's got a much smaller carbon footprint and create their own tiny they're going to have many skill carbon for. Speaking as a complete lie him and then he's there any chance whatsoever that any of these books could end up going the wrong wind into perhaps Rincon water and if you know in the tops or anything like. That if the water treatment process and the way process are completely independent the way for treatment process is over everything that comes down the top and down the toilet not. By clean purifying and then the sergeants the river and then there's a completely separate sort of business which is water treatment which basically takes water from a number different sources one of them in rivers and then goes through a completely new kind of purified process no there's no way that any of these of the founder. That's any of the project manager certain trends. For the West Midlands M B B C W N 95.6 massive problems on the M 6 this morning hey with a very light East it's Jason Johnson Yes on the M 6 he's closed this morning in both directions between Junction 12 the Galleon 13 is Stafford sad because of an accident involving a lorry that happened just after midnight at the queues on the northbound M 6 now from before junction 10 I coming southbound It's very heavy as well approaching junction 13 now the diversion route is along the I 5 in the A 449 but that's very slow going to be a force. By me at the perfume Lulu because that was a Sikh is my name so it wasn't a perfect like celebrity per feelings of the smell of Lulu saying no I. Mean She's with us in the studio this can only mean one thing that. We have caught. Yes it's time for Have I Got News For You and newspaper headline Quaids where we give you a story from one of today's newspapers and challenge you to come up with a suitable headline for today's story we've gone back to the tabloids Gradgrind. Into the Guardian yesterday today stories from the mayor and it's a local story and I think we're going to view this guy half have weight So drink up . So it's. So to use the word subject and he does but not in that context I get a text from him going so. He does so at an incredible $50000.00 points on a mammoth pub crawl which is covered 320000 miles and stretched $35.00 yards 63 year old has been traveling the length and breadth of the nation since 9094 visiting 21404 boozes wound with his band of pals 21000 pubs Yeah sounds like a night out with. 1000 drinks and a West Bromwich man has drunk 50000 points on a country wide pub crawl which is so far lasted 35 years so what should the headline but you this morning do give us a call oh a. Double out double 95 Think you can text just one triple threat start your message W. And yesterday actually it was one of the suggestions for a while I got news for you that she ended up winning the most it was was now can't remember what it was now it's back to the future Oh yeah that was the year or is that the day before I don't know anyway. If you punch you when you get some and a breakfast blog we will choose the best text of the best call of the best tweet or at the end of the program and then you get to choose where you want to some or it does mark but you've got to be in it to win it so a West Bromwich man dropped a so far drop $50000.00 points on a countrywide pop crawl which is so far lasted 35 years what should the headline but the other side with Adrian Goldberg this week amid Lin's broadcasting legend Bob Warman have to say I miss the old world the old studios the old central studios across the road there were 1500 people working there at one time and 3 massive sound studios knew it was like a city within the city even almost the whole social life was in there as well because there are 2 or 3 bars which are always packed coming to booths everybody takes. Them to all that's gone. That's the other side of this something bad news on the B.C.W.S. 95.6 Now coming up after right o'clock this morning we'll be talking about some exclusive B.B.C. Figures which show fewer reported crimes against L.G. Baity people my King it's of course this is despite the numbers of crimes being reported rising quite dramatically now we'll be speaking to a man who's moving away from the West Midlands after he and his partner were victims of a homophobic attack we'll hear their story just after 8 o'clock this morning it's 10 to 8 now and we're going to hear the story about the University of Birmingham who've apologized to staff after failing to pay some of them for months now it's up to be big C.W.M. Major problems with the university's new payroll system which was used to recruit and manage casual workers over the summer including the university students now we're talking about like temporary jobs like working at open days or conferences and carried out by research projects or internships but they're not wishing they never bothered because the university still hasn't paid them righteous in all of this comes as students get ready for the new term of course some students have even told us that they've had to move back in with their parents or had to borrow money from them because they can't afford their rent we understand that hundreds of casual workers are affected by this and our reporter Laura chitlins been speaking to 2 of them I mean I'm a student here at the University of I'm a physicist and for 5 weeks over the summer I spent my time doing a placement with the Birmingham Energy Institute doing a desktop base today for which I was owed $1500.00 pounds and I'm still waiting on over $300.00 pounds of that to be paid to me I have had to move back home because I can't actually afford to stay at the university financially support myself because the university have still got my money and. These problems have a reason really because this is a new system that lots of people have been having problems with his cause a lot of stress has in it yeah it has caused a lot of stress so I think there are over 300 of us that have been affected by the issues from work and can pay a role there have been people that work in the student bars on campus and there are people that have been waitin for wages from open days and that sort of thing which took place in April in March and was that study taken by the study the 1st time Egypt worked for the university Yes So that was the 1st time I'd ever worked for the university it's my 1st placement at the university but I think this has kind of put me off doing anything like this again the actual experience of working for the university was great the members of staff that I was with were really supportive the friends I was on placement with were fantastic is just what's come after I didn't think I'd have to be fighting the university for more money and as a result this group has been set up called the University of Birmingham she didn't work because you've worked out there around 300 of you are affected Yeah it does feel good to know that are not the only one because when I initially went into payroll the 1st time and tried to say to them that I've been taxed incorrectly they did say to me that I was the only person to have ever gone into the payroll office and I'm working poor payroll for these issues I was spoken to by 3 different members of staff who were all telling me different things I just I frustration really passionate as I insert leaving the office in tears I did this work so that I could support myself through the summer I wanted to be able to pay my rent I don't want to be living on the bank of Mum and Dad I'm 20 years old I moved away for uni for independents and I feel like I've lost a little bit because I've not been able to support myself while I'm here even though I've done the work the payment side of things has really sort of damaged that relationship that I had with the university I would encourage anybody that studies here that can financially support themselves without a job please just start doing it it's more trouble than it's worth. About a quarter of questions about home. Patient on the very sort of things the open days our work were on the 28th on the 29th of June and I did just under 15 hours which warranted about 150 pounds worth of payment and have been waiting since the July 30th for that I have found them to be one of the worst employers of the work in my life and how as a liberal lefty feelin well honestly it's left me quite angry at times because of folks like exploited before and it just it really does make you feel kind of worthless as an employee and as a worker those people are our student workers here who haven't been able to pay this month's run basically they've been left so far behind on their payments and it's probably going to affect the quality way into the future because some people received a kind of partial payment some people receive the full amount some people received nothing at all so people have been texting correctly now resigned as well because the situation was just but terrible that's our reporter Laura Chaffetz and talking to 2 students who weren't properly paid for work that they did on campus over the summer and we'll hear what the university had to say about this in just a minute but 1st Phoebe Gill has started a petition and wrote an open letter to the vice chancellor about this is with us now good morning Phoebe morning why did you start this petition and well I started seeing a few posts on Facebook from other students in a student group just saying that they haven't been paid in things yet and I was also experiencing that so I just reached out to them and then sent a few tweets and unison actually reached out to me and asked me what was going on so I just decided to organize some students to. Sort of understand where these issues are coming from. And how has this affected the students and how it's I reacted to not being priced I think everyone's just extremely frustrated at this point the university really push student casual work as something that is sort of enriching for experience at the university and it is the actual work is great I really enjoyed what I did personally but. It's just become quite insulting to be honest the we've had to chase around for months and we're getting ignored the university aren't fully addressing all of the issues despite the apologies for example the tax issue hasn't been addressed by the university and yeah I think it's just really disappointing So this is happened to you then and has and has affected you personally well I worked a conference for a week and I would have had enough money to cover cover one of my month's rent this summer but because I was emergency taxed I lost over $100.00 pounds of my paycheck and have had to borrow money from my parents to pay rent which I didn't really want to have to do. So that's just a lot of stress for me and I've been you know in and out of the work and office while I was working and also phoning up the university like several times a week for the whole summer trying to sort these issues out. And I mean apart from pi you. Would you not see the universe today I think our main concern is the fact that there's been a complete lack of communication with the students we've had to apologies issues but they haven't gone to everyone because not everyone is on an assignment anymore so they're not receiving the e-mails and also just no communication on the tax problems that we've had Being were registered with the wrong tax code we think the university just needs to communicate more tell students what's going on and also the financial compensation offered in terms of covering over draft fees doesn't really take into consideration all the other financial issues students are having for example having to quit jobs and borrow money they're not really knowledge in math. Thanks very much for a B. That's Phoebe Gill who's been campaigning for fairer treatment of casual workers at the University of Birmingham a spokesman for the universe he said We understand that ensuring students and staff are paid on time and correctly is imperative and we would like to apologize to all of those affected losses issue has impacted on less than 3 percent of staff paid through the payroll we are conscious of the effect this is had on individuals and with taking this extremely seriously and the statement goes on to say we are continuing to work very hard to ensure that those affected receive the correct pay as quickly as possible arrangements have been put in place and communicated to students enabling them to access immediate phones so they do not fall into financial hardship in addition we have offered immediate payment of any costs incurred example bank charges etc Things been a lack of communication which is anything has been you should also you know he changing over to a new payroll system already new business system I've been involved in these changes before the very 1st thing you do is make sure everybody gets paid whether you tax codes can be a bit wonky there can be other issues but people have to be paid because people rely on the B.B.C. On to hoax. It's after 11 we'll take a peek at some of your very early front pages in the national news stories for today we've got the random quiz on the way we've got a couple new ones TONIGHT producer ribbons but hot at it. We're going with a slightly different kind of one for telling tonight I don't know what we should call that it's not the telling of a song we've basically taken a clip of a song and spun it backwards and we're going to ask you to get artist in title from that so we'll see how you get on with that and I've given strict instructions tonight that. I don't want to answer I want to see if I can get it as well because I don't see how that works we will get to those 5 questions to the new in just a minute or so 1st forgive me I do get a little bit giddy with it being the B.B.C. And the archives because when you saw trawling through and looking all through kind of stuff you just come across amazing things and I came across this I don't want to give too much away but it is possibly one of the most famous B.B.C. Theme tunes ever and it was 1st well wasn't 1st purpose to song I've been a Russian originally performed by a lady. That tremendously talented pianist Winifred out well back many years before but a B.B.C. Producer somewhere thought we've got this sport there's a clue and we need a sort of you know call jazzy fun kind of intro they went with this Can you guess 080-121-7575 or war into it one triple 3 from the thing tune which legendary B.B.C. T.V. Program began tonight on B.B.C. 2 back in 1969 it was sport they filmed it actually not a 1000000 miles away from us here in the West Country but I'm told we filmed in Broome at Pebble Mill in ready for the thing you're ready for that OK here we are ready. Everybody anybody from anywhere. I mean I'm all right with. The generation that grew up in the eighty's. The ways from. Pulling in audiences of 5XW1X5W for this new criticism that there was that. I think it was me pretending that. We've got a cause back in 1969 or in the U.K. It would not necessarily match the game reliant on different colors. Black and White. And there was that classic. For those watching. Blue and. White everything. Everything looks white so they go back in this exit good one thing terence trent d'arby if you let me stay just give up on 30 minutes after 11 on the b.b.c. Katrina are in the waves and bryan adams it's not pomegranates from lynn to ring rad stuck ireland deli meat tree Coming from from that is it that they were all for a long time at number one from day one when you can know it's not. In the cold. Goods. I know a lot of people rave about Cher's version it's good don't get me wrong but it looks now knowing if it's all right it's no Marconi's it myself I mean everyone thanks for your company tonight sworn in on the Late Show on the B.B.C. Across the west Walking in Memphis. OK so I have a small tiny can but next is going to kill me when he gets back look here's my excuse I normally all work here during the day and so when I move on to the late shift like this it's quite the 1st couple days I'm a bit like oh resignedly I'm surviving on coffee I can't sleep because you wake up you be so go back to 3 o'clock in the morning you wake up a lie 6 off 6 and then you go spend the rest of the day awake so I was I was bit tired last night when it got to very near midnight. And dammit silly now but still area thought I'd gotten away with it. Good right she's good she knows the score last night you know when we do the round up of the queries. And I'll say here's where we're standing on such and such and you can play again tomorrow night did it in a day. And had a cup of tea and once or. So what happened was I was reading out and went to read out the wrong answers that we've had for Sylvia's question in Amesbury me Sylvia day 5 Question 2 because I'm tired and I wasn't quite used to the shift in hours I actually read I mistakenly read out the right answer. Like well away with it no one and Sue's just room up to say well I am. Even so Larry's all right but a moment here and there we go our lovely part of the world thank you for playing the game anyway thank you for not reporting me to my boss. So I did I got it wrong but hopefully right in a funny kind of way let's run through the questions that we got so far tonight then on Wednesday night's random quiz by the way about a lock off you tonight someone in a mom who OK. Question one is on day 6 only 24 hours it was time to Go dess into Magna Come on we've got to get someone that knows what this noise it's. 101217575 So look I don't make mistakes very often the last one was about 87 yeah right question number 208-012-1757 extension 5. Stone House Music question global as well what links Deacon Blue Yellow Katrina in the waves and Bryan Adams All Together Now here's what instead of doing the tailender we're going to go with some the bit different tonight instead of taking the last bit of a song we're going to take a middle bit and we've sort of messed around with it with our computers and whatnot and stuff and we reverse the song so you're going to kind of hear him backwards I want an artist in a title place for question number 3 it's day once and I hit it 1st place and Ruben our producer put this together. And I kind of I said look don't I don't know the answer so this isn't one of those things of the presenter says he or she doesn't know the answer in the rep I really don't so let's see how this sound was it. I think I don't know. You know. If you can guess 1st of all I'm going to say is it female. What you reckon 810-121-7575 could be a good one that one that's a reverse song The question for is on day one it's from David in which can what makes a West Country town to a famous Czech composer. What links a West Country town to a famous Czech composer away 101217575 if you want to play and the legendary Christian number 5 which I should you said Who was that guy on last night he was terrible. So I'm sorry I apologize I was tired I mistakenly gave out the answer but I'm hoping only Sue and I would say Larry. You won for that one seat she noticed that some of the wrong answers for question number 5 so far Sylvia Amesbury I feel I've got become pretty Ruben do me a favor on our screen here will you just take off the answer so I don't go there again Sylvia in Amesbury question a few years ago Warren I bought something I've always wanted but what was it wrong answers include Tonight cops will stone fireplace and no no I've just been told somebody else must of heard it last night oh man such a clown. Yes it would appear that at midnight I thought how even though I've accidentally given out the answer to question number 5 I'll be OK There's no one late though there's plenty listen in. So there you go 27 minutes after 11 by the way for those of us that are going to be watching a bit of cricket more have you want to be the weather let me run you through your 3 or 4 day forecast now it's not well known the next couple days so decent to be perfectly honest dry tonight clear periods sunny intervals for Thursday but will be the chance of the odd shower around the West Country might dodge it tonight you might notice it's going to be a little bit cooler overnight than lights. Down to run about anywhere between depend if you are a far south as a cold will Devon 10 up to sort of 13 for Gloucestershire will share some a set and possibly still as well tomorrow in general actually that cloud should. Sort of ease off a little bit and should be fairly dry might get a couple shop showers but nothing major Something to think that we had a Monday 23 by the weekend a little warmer 2425 but Monday Tuesday think we're in for a big dropoff. Across the west with Calvin Harris Sam Smith a blight on 4 lane is just given as a drop in a penny a text message with some nice things to say thank you Elaine there you go you can have that one on those rights $25.00 to $12.00 should be able to see what's going off in the newspapers tonight. On the red tops and have a little peek at the initial looks into the front pages there's a story that most of them are covering actually in its show Saudis or if it really it's to do with they are calling it the death plunge story quite frankly it's about Cambridge student who left more than 3 and a half 1000 feet to a death from Ally aircraft in Madagascar. Very sad just awful pictures and information on that particular story they most of the newspapers as well if I were to say to you the name Amanda Knox would you remember that the Foxy Knoxy the story of this student in Italy. The son exclusively revealing tonight that Amanda Knox is . Very odd relationship that she was having at 1st she put an appeal out for crowdfunding for her wedding it's now been exposed after it emerged that she's already married so Goodness me who knows what's going on there but. The sun seemed to be across that story. Elsewhere some of your other newspapers tonight the Daily Mail still have more breaking news on this just awful story about Kim's university student. Who. Jumped out this plane at around about 5000 feet there's more as you would expect plenty more this will keep on going for ever and a day really for Let It Be Love Island scenarios all talking about that. Plenty more as well about Boris Johnson being in and around things in Northern Ireland today for the 1st time in a while and. Your little peek into the times tonight tells us on the front pages. About Johnson's trip to Northern Ireland and talk about the do you pay what basically goes on there's an interesting story as well about the start of the glory of Goodwood Festival and an 18 year old jockey will be should be the 1st to wear her G. But could would she carries out her job also something that came through last night and there was a bit of a bit of coverage of this throughout the day actually from I don't think it was actually the Met Office but the office was commenting on this particular story that the times are taking on today that the 10 hottest years on record and they've been keeping records for a good period of time now the 10 hottest years of apparently occurred all since 2002 so where we are right musically between now and let's say. Midnight. Simple Minds Don't You Forget About Me big break David. And this. Show would be good. To do in a minute. Recap and play pretty continuously on Now I'm going to. Have a small confession Mike and that is it midnight last night and I will be handing in my resignation letter to the director general at 9 am tomorrow morning. I'm just going to different shift pattern of work you know it's a light so I was a bit tired. Gave out the answer to question. Now everybody knows. or quit so anyway questionable want as weak play with the questions that we've got on the run them course question 6 so we need to crack um with this because we've only literally facts of league of it isn't go to now in the next 50 minutes or so in of a 24 asked to play questions one is from dez inch you magna i'm wants to know what this noise this question to still hasn't gone and it's a great question thank you lee in stone house for given as this what links deacon blue e.l.o. Katrin are in the waves i'm brian adams together yes it's a musical link but think outside the box a little bit as well question 3 a is day wore on for our special reversed song we've sort of mixed it messed around a ruben are produced put it all together and i thought this was quite tricky we have a right answer but i won't give you that until midnight so what would you made of this would you run ok so here's the thing it is not down to get down from barry an ill minster in it's nothing my bananarama question for is on day wore on and again blimey with be juran it's an eye out year this is help if we got if in might tired help of given either i answer but question for is on day one david him when scheme i focus was great question what makes so west country town to a famous check composer we've got the answer already but will still keep on plane and day 5 was on question own a day to question 5 sylvie or names bring thank you very much for sort of baron with me on this i did give me answer out of italy little pretty did emotional lots night Question was a few years ago she bought something that she'd always wanted to have what was it and there have been a couple correct answers through so by me it's like tomorrow night will be starting with 52 questions but it's going to kill me when he gets back but there we are. On the set. Then begin. The book. And. Everybody gets. Me in the. Woods trying to. Get. Out of this. Shit this is. A beautiful. I stand. To. Close. This. Beautiful. Well as part of comic relief now is the bodyguard sketch with Richard Madden is overjoyed that it's all right now except that you want to watch you know you're going to watch it probably later but it looks really good doesn't it so I was just watching a little bit here and listening to it Richard Madden was basically making love to children and while it's not happened everybody is aware that this is the love that they were finally flirting Oh yes well we've got the very recent total actually going to give us the latest figure here yes. It is 30000000 519201 pounds I mean this is that right yeah that's a 30 I mean $30000000.00 is that you know already amazing still like an hour left and they take donations on words I mean you can text 30 pounds and the word yes to 70230 if you want to get involved there's loads of other ways of dating as well as you know all the big stars and their David Tennant's Lenny Henry is there Ramesh rang a date and he's one of my favorite comedians is on the screen now anyway it's all happening that we thought we'd celebrate that as well that we also thought we'd play the B.B.C.'s quiz of the week for that year if you're bit worried about this only what about how much news is going to be in here I am a little bit worried about this. One I don't know how it's going to go yet I think I think we're both going to be very way we appreciate it here you think. Here we go then OK ready we ready for this people say the rich are mad and could be the next train. By the way which leads in nicely to our 1st question of the B.B.C. Quiz of the when they get so in the next James Bond film double 07 will reportedly be making an eco friendly change what's he going to do is he I'm going to turn vegetarian is going to wear a solar powered watch or is he going to drive an electric car. Or your media thoughts here. Drive an electric car and that's what that's what I'm thinking I can't imagine him turning vegetarian and wearing a solar powered watch is that really going to is that worth mentioning Yeah deader than are you clicking along like I am right and clicked it correct Dr electric I don't know the answer to this by the way so this is good driving electric car reportedly Daniel Craig's Bond will drive an Aston Martin D L quarter of a 1000000 quid just for the car mains and. He'll go right next question number 2. So where is the most popular spot to start a walk in Britain according to the Ordinance Survey. Horton in riddles Dale in the Yorkshire Dales the dale in the Peak District or Ambleside in the Lake District what you think well the kind of from the Lake District there are and the Lake District is lovely So just for that reason I'm going to get select and also I'm going to select on the side only because when I went to the Lake District for the 1st time ever last year we started our walk Ambleside did we really did so if it's not right you'll be pleased to know that it's wrong our what he did in the Peak District wealthy Delhi I don't I don't know where that is now it works in the pits straight. No idea obviously it's the start of the pen on my way the Darbyshire village of the Dell is the top STARTING POINT next it was fair homes in the Peak District and then Snowdonia except for that on the site is up there so that's good but. Even so far yes what else the mayor of which city has set out to debunk what he says is a coli myth that a popular international dish originated in his city is it the mayor of and spiritual an ace is the mayor of Kiev and Chicken Kiev or is it the mayor of Hamburg and hamburger So where is a place which basically isn't famous for the food I'm going to say hambo because I think I've heard this in the past OK it's not from him. But I think that it's Kiev some mistake here here. You know no one thinks that spaghetti. That's ridiculous that was true. Probably is not going to go. They all Virginia Motorola's said the real dish is simply in Italy and can be served with a range of plaster most notably tell you Deli in belong you know itself. You know having gone next OK A new 50 P. Piece celebrating Professor Stephen Hawking's work on black holes was unveiled this week in what century was the concept of a black hole 1st proposed the 18th century the 19th century or the 20th century this is hard call's. I base been around longer than you think yeah I would have said the 18th but maybe maybe not that the concept 1st proposed he can't propose to him self County Surely he must have what maybe he did. He's very famous for his work on black holes yes I'm saying 19th OK I'm going to copy then are No it was 18 Is it wrong I'm not surprised. And I mean that. I don't write like a can of on you know your little cheat round you've got to say I did say that I think it would have been the 18th John let me show ampere Seymour last came up with the idea in the 18th century OK that's fair it's not going that well for me to promise I got one out who want to. Force that one out for so far OK Next baking items and smart speakers have been added to the Office for National Statistics inflation basket this week what I did was remove I don't understand this question so I'm going to click randomly so this isn't. Play shouldn't basket I don't understand what what's an inflation basket. If anybody knows what inflation is please let us know because the options here are children's fiction books popcorn and envelopes I don't understand the question so I'm going to say popcorn Yeah I'm with it. OK Well I was I have clicked buckle on because I didn't want to cheat but you were thinking of not doing that well you know it turns out that the answer is actually envelopes I don't understand what the question is OK Oh I don't know this one I know this one right David Bowie demo sold at auction this week after being discovered in a loft after almost 50 years but what was the song I I don't even know this one because I've played it on the play throughout the radio I think actually on this show right I'm just going to click anything because I don't know. Where you so I clicked start man and start on the right answer record and said The demo was sold for 50 just a little 50 Pacing isn't it Starman Space Odyssey in life on Mars to star man of course the correct answer well done right last question and yes OK Emer. All it while has smashed the party World Records I read this so this is the value of the number pi it's been calculated to a new world record length of 31 trillion digits but how long would it take to say that number so if you going to say this 31.4 trillion digit number so you can say like 40 I think it's a yatta yatta meter is like that anyway so 40 something for a 1000000000 trillion zillion what how long would it take to actually just say that number out loud it's either 3064 years 32064 years or 332064 years. Just say it I'm just going to go have a for the 2nd one that you think is to be the longest I'm going to say the maximum Yes Max. 330064 years it would take wow they calculated it with the help of Google's cloud computing service so 3 out of 7 for me. I am going to get. It says 77 easy as pie 64 is pie in the sky and 3 out of 030 is humble pie so we're a little humble pie not so good is it really I mean we definitely need to improve on knowledge on B.B.C. Quizzes and I feel that we've learnt things that way that everybody. Think apply to our all the time which apply again probably that's what. The out. In. The. Last over. The. Last. Few hours. Want. About me. Trying to. with. No. Guts to keep. a little chuckle the road is next and we're talking George Michael as well. Selling his. You and. You are going. To get. To. See. Us. Go and. Go and. Go and. To a. New A. It's. Oh. Wow. Wow. Wow Wow. Wow. Wow Wow. C Wow wow wow wow. Wow wow wow. Wow wow wow wow. Wow. Wow. Wow wow wow wow the best my. P.C. Ready to pounce on him 934 Exactly Chris Bury his head is in the house as well as news from you crazy it's been a good mix of everything isn't it to the highs and lows it is a really important office that we talked about this and. I liked it very good now but it was about George Michael and his art collection going on sale selling option in total for $11300000.00 pounds. They are amazing the one I really like the best is called the incomplete truth is by Damien Hirst and it's a dove that's preserved in formaldehyde which I think is a kind of like an acid or something but it's it's it looks amazing doesn't it and there really is hanging. From far it looks amazing but if I were close to that door I probably freak me out Yeah I real deal yeah yeah he's famous for he does things like the shark that was encased in the same thing yeah you wouldn't want the shark I don't think. But it's interesting. So it's 27 months since he died such long time feels like it was only the other day and there was I think Prince George Michael and David Bowie and then Terry Wogan there was a dream about a period of time when just it was terrible was that it was someone said I like this you know as I don't believe in it particularly but someone said it's like God has given the list like The Apprentice and The Apprentice is gone or what about the job I mean it's like you can't let all these people go and crazy but he's 53 years old so. What else do you like because some of it though like a really good eye for art but some of it I mean there's a there's a chiseled out statue of a gorilla I would be paying 112000 pounds for that or whatever under 19018 K. That was what it was like bought for for a bronze gorilla I think that's pretty cool No And this is like not much like a teeny weeny to anyone this is a lifestyle a life size bronze gorilla but it's almost fallen off it looks like it's broken that's what makes it unique. He is looking at his arm like that what I want it back I want it back but I can't because I'm. I'm a statue in this that you. Yeah there's also some Basically some lines on the block a painting just like straight vertical line and yet I don't know what it is here. I wonder whether that was. A pretty picture of wallpaper really because this is expensive Wolf Well apparently he bought loads of are between 20042009 he says that he pleased himself and he made up his own mind about what he likes every single lot sold as well and they say is part of his the depth of feeling that he continues to generate as well but I think it's good I think you should check it out and some of the lots that sold there because I think they're beautiful and the nice thing is that all the money that's been raised will go towards the stuff that the star had supported as well exactly charities as the exactly so I think that's great because if you can sell off art like that you know it's not going to go towards a bigger house it's actually going to the sort of thing that he really wanted that money to go towards and the like when people die if they're nice people all these ridiculous stories come out that amazing stories he would sort of donate money to people anonymously it's just anyway very commendable Yeah so that's George Michael they're going to also get a well and sort of near ending total of comic relief in about $1015.00 some like the programs I think it's going to finish at 10 so it will probably get a total rave very much toward Yeah I just felt like that sounds good to me but it's going amazingly so far so much money race anyway so about raising money today in a minute we're going to hear some George Michael. Was hoping you wouldn't ask what is the red nose you know I'm going to donate I could have lent you one and this is me wearing it so I sound of it you should just keep that on for the rest apartment so she is an improvement on your normal speaking with a much you're welcome. But I think you are going to have to take that now is that OK to success I think that's kind of crossing live to Brussels and I think it'll be a bit weird if I did it best You know we. Haven't actually. Break this back on Monday morning from 6 B.B.C. Radio in your family. With the. Second half. Cut. Back on the. Things. Much money for the. Fans and this is Chris. Yes. The out. With the. I am I out. Right now this is crisp air I was in charge of things just checking. For. Mayes. If. You. Can. Use it. And. It's. You. This sound to. You. To. Do. From Sister Sledge and thinking of you if you don't hear that often on the radio to be honest so very cautious not to be in a funk every now and then it's a nice thing to have waiting for the kind of running total for comic relief and Red Nose Day at the moment I get I get the distinct impression that they're going to save it until exactly 10 o'clock during the news and a Don't you agree they normally just leave it right to the end that they were thinking let's save it right until the last minute yet they are going to. They're going to keep us hanging hanging and that's when we were very awkward for it or you know like what we can to you and I would have to wait at the end of the show a movie I'm hoping it would be the 10 O'Clock News you know be good how much do you think they will raise they're already on $30000000.00 you know she's amazing and after an hour they were on $10000000.00 or 12000000 so they were doing amazingly I mean it so they were on 13000000 by 8 o'clock and then by 9 o'clock. I wonder if they can get to 50 because also some of the best sketches of the night you know they've had the bodyguard one now and they've had Del Boy and that crew doing their thing they've had some really amazing ones so yeah I think it could be 50 and that the arm believable I think it will be around 50 as well and it's also carrying on there's some University Challenge Star action on B.B.C. 2 young up so that's going to be on for about 45 minutes after him and it's going to be a host of stars playing the University Challenge hosting easy Jeremy Paxman hosting it with Judge I think is Judge Rivers on the panel as the judge does on the panel there's there's there's loads of great people actually having a look at who's who's featured on Universe chance because it's one of those things where like I like watching is a normal program but the problems only ever get kind of. One answer right ever so you know it's over but I think it's not even that much music around which I should be good at because you know I studied music at university I still just can't do it . It's actually hosted by David Baddiel this time which is interesting and Jason Manford on the judge arraigned image and as well Vic hopes that Emily attack is on down how it's Kerry got him and he's in. What's called after life with Ricky Gervais's recently I've been watching. Is on there and Roger telling as well with Martin Freeman It will be good he's going to be really good looking forward to that . That's happening Alan Partridge is currently on the T.V. I'm believable he's outside one of the B.B.C. Look East fans as well that's amazing with my fiance works for B.B.C. Cased Alan Partridge territory it's amazing that you know if you do get the title that you know but otherwise I will leave you with boy meets girl this is waiting for a starter for. The 2 Radio. It's time to sign now but I'm delighted to say and Helen knows that we have a total just as we approach 10 o'clock for comic relief and Red Nose Day Give us the lowdown WHAT'S THE So what's the big number here so the total is 49000000 739800 91 that is amazing is that so I mean Test money keeps on coming in anyway so it's not the end of the story there's more happening on B.B.C. 2 Well I was able to give him money by the way it's a huge thing you know well done and thank you glad we got it in just before in the shows Thank you Hannah thank you could we care piece that everybody had enjoyed. The news all the way to. Attention next week on the show she went if there's a day I see that. On mine D.A.B. Digital radio on Freeview channels 7340 in this is B.B.C. Radio Northampton. B.B.C. Member the 5th of November as they say let me know if you're heading to an event this evening maybe at the something happening ne you're hosting an event your organization maybe tonight is the night let me know audience well what's on Darrien will give you a mention on the breakfast show before 9 o'clock it's John I insist today 7 minutes past 8 and after 5 grueling months say Ross actually from Grantham has finally finished his epic swim around the coast of Great Britain. Was. I gotcha was. Was. Was the man is a machine and he's live on B.B.C. Radio Lincolnshire with this with us this morning morning Ross how you feeling today hey. I'm good I've had a bath. I feel pretty. Well what's it like what's it like hearing that back that moment I am mansion he can still feel the sensation of walking on land for the 1st time in 5 months yeah I don't know I'm going to completely want to see I was so worried I was going to fall over because art obviously. I think he's having these my legs of 157 days of I was so worried that with all the cameras there are just. So I never said you know how do you feel as an honestly just really I didn't hurt yourself. I think you'd have been forgiven even if you'd a full and. I don't think people would have been to both that about. The people who don't know what you've been doing just just explain why you did this. Yes And I think you know growing up hearing stories of great pretty sick entries from from Shackleton's So my favorite being kept somewhere in the science some the English Channel and everybody at the time said it was too treacherous the tides are too strong to call out and you know like said August 18th 75 and I love the story in a will and Sue and on a diet of brandy and beef broth he crossed the English Channel and for me I was like that's some mazing you know he just completely shifted what we thought was possible and I think in their small way you know my thoughts on June the 1st they said Yeah I thought you know can you sing MARGARET And so I said all in color realize how BIG Great Britain. Left a 157 days fortunately finally wrote back your mom. Was or was there a moment and I imagine there were many moments when you were doing this where you thought this was a mistake. Like I said I didn't realize how great it was a. Kind of perception it has a license and that's quite you know sort of most compared to as in Lincolnshire where the Newcastle feels really it's not really that I'm not considered Newcastle the Midlands you know having some thing around Scotland does acres of. Honestly there wasn't really any moment to think like that because the tide changes every 6 hours so it's 6 hours on 6 hours off 6 hours and 6 hours if you're section 57 day so if you call this to think our unit is yours this is really tough you know maybe we're going to just kind of feel sorry for myself then that would eat in your sleeping time as well so really it's just been 57 days on and off how much preparation did you do back in back in Lincolnshire before you set off on these appy epics when I had how long had you been preparing for it oh i get his sorry long journey but I think the thing you always stuck with Max it's to prepare for the 6006 I was offered of swimming to work with the time you kind of have to do this point 6 leap where you know you sleeping twice a day will start swimming for tour around the day and I spoke to 3 of my friends who were ocean I was from Lincolnshire and they gave me the best advice I just said well you just got kind of do it and then adapt on the day because it's kind of like if your if you're having a baby and you're pregnant you don't sort of think I'm going to practice sleep deprivation it's like that you have the baby then you do all that and I know we start. In pregnant so you come in it's stuck with me there yeah there were a lot of prep on the day. Leading up to it a lot of it was just figuring out as we went to live just talk me through just talk me through the very 1st moment and you getting the water is the 1st of June you've got in the water what were you feeling like at that point. I'm. Optimistic but sort of London. And I think I think that was quite good thing like you know I said at the start I was so naive to start it but also so stop and and I think you know when I started didn't realize how how big group it was I didn't realize how big the jellyfish were going to be but I would have thought at the hardship there was also so many privileges as well since winning with minke whales and dolphins seals that was amazing so yeah it wasn't what I expected it. Was better in so many white 12 minutes past 8 B.B.C. Radio. In for Scott on the British I talking to Ross from Grantham Ross has done this incredible challenge I don't know I don't know how he's done it I'll be honest . I'm just stunned by the fact you've done this one thing that one thing that really stood out for me slightly concerned me is now you've got to I imagine dramatically dropped you calorie count yeah again or so that is one thing I because it's been amazing I know it's just been a competition with a bit of something foreign and so now I've got to kind of really just I was I was eating around 15000 calories and then and certainly when I arrived back in Lincolnshire I was 7 people friends and family just as a child and you saw what how can you do $16000.00 so I brought food Grimsby the fish and chips they're amazing so you know yeah all the way down the coast basically from groups all the way to skate mess. For taking so much. So you're right I've got to go to really just look at it really really just a life online and thankfully have have you had a land but since you've been back I guess you know I haven't I haven't had one yet that's not to say you know I just it's just not something that's I'm going to. Talk to both I and this was the thing that was. Most remarkable to me you came out of the water you're in Margate you do that interview 1st of all your smiling I mean. You just swam nearly 2000 miles and you're still smiling which is ridiculous in itself but then you say I'm not sick of swimming. Oh no don't do this because I'm almost over story. Was just for the crystal channel actually. Basically a school for the final 5 miles all the way to Wales and I tend to map the captain on the set what's going on. In circles around me a mass that I think that it's a female well and I think that she thinks that you're an injured seal so she basically guided me all the way to Wales and when we got to shadow all it was like oh you know you're safe now so when I say I'm not like moments like that all of the jellyfish stings and people look at my you know my neck and the chafing from the well so. My tongue fell out with the salt water and it was drying up and. For all of that moments were coming so well I think that's amazing That's why I want to I'm not saying I'm doing a 2nd lap. Wow you made friends with a whale but also made a few enemies of jellyfish as you mentioned. Yeah specially the ones in Scotland I mean they're just bigger and angrier and I mean there was one point actually for the Koreans action which is one of the world's biggest Well calls I was saying straight through that so I couldn't really stop and I remember I was swimming couldn't slow down because obviously I would have been pulled into the whirlpool so I'm stunned I'm swimming for an hour as hard as I can to get through the whirlpool and but this pain that this particular jellyfish was it was like searing into my skin and so I looked up at Matt has and said You know I've been stung but this one's different it's. A mat look down at the inside yes it's still wrapped around your face. Time to call it a wrap didn't quite go was just slack in the 1st. Joint jelly thing in the thanks not so. Wow I just can't I just can't believe that this feels like I'm reading a novel that someone's written someone who may think this is a man from Grantham on B.B.C. Radio Lincolnshire who's been attacked by a jellyfish I'm a trend. So the other thing you mentioned was you know this isn't a lot of challenge you going to do you've got plans for something else what can you possibly do what will your body allow you to do that's bigger than this yeah that's that's the scary thing that John is so now we've done this and I almost wanted to arrive on the beach I think I have you know nothing left and granted it was brutal I pushed my body so far but but now at the moment I kind of think well that was a good 5 months of training so I'm quite well. Not bad at swimming at the moment so I just think I don't know if that we can sit around. Then maybe you know there's been a few suggestions started out and I don't know I need to run the pass myself and 1st actually I should point out because I did tell her all the way to 3 months 5 so if any any future I guess I have to actually run through the missions that. I imagine she's quite relieved to have you home. I think she is yeah although she's frightening to shave my beard when I sleep as well as no that's not the souvenir That's a nice even he can bring back from being in the water that long. Just I've grown quite fond like it like a sterile doc but you my adult cat likes kind of like that so I want to keep it you look like cancer you look you look like an adventurer. An amazing thing I imagine a bit of rest though before you do anything else. A bit of rest before anything else happens now Oh yeah just just things like you know a bass and I don't bat so I don't get those things I'm just I don't know I just can't grow it sounds. Like a. 5 so just enjoy. Ros I think you're incredible I think what you've done is is remarkable and the fact that you can come on the radio just 40 hours after being back on land and laugh about some of the horrendous things that have happened to you but would you give me nightmares for years is remarkable Ross thank you so much and hopefully when you come up with another wacky idea we can we can come and follow you for a bit of a salute and you'll be the 1st that they. Can get involved I'm not swimming around Great Britain no chance wrong thank you so much Ross Edgeley ground for what a man what a guy I'm just blown away by that Suze here as well. But I want to post that says invited because it was just a great night can you imagine oh by the way guys it's a party we're going to have some drinks and then we're just going to look at where the knot clip is. So yes it probably would be like one to 19 minutes past 80 the B.B.C. Radio. In for Scott some of the other things in the I can't concentrate and I'm thinking about doing some big challenge myself and what else is happening and that will pass Jan I don't mean. It's gone it's gone already there's a full page spread in the mail and all these are all these folks and these a myth to deal with animals and so things like did they donate blood to the bats true or false. No it's true if they're there apparently they're very. They're very they like living alongside one another and if one back goes out and finds a nice meal it takes it back to its colony and it would donate mouth to mouth blood to the bats who haven't found a nice meal so you see they're very nice it wigs like to lay eggs in your ears do you know my gran used my Nana used to tell me that I think it was true that falls right yes it would do you like moist dark places but they prefer natural habitats so anyway has never been reported to have laid an egg inside a human. Can you get high from looking at it. Now it's funny that I was thinking about that this morning on the drive to work. I Don't Have No I don't it now of course not. But a sentence I don't think every Saturday I know when it is true you can get Howie from licking a toad because there's a chemical that makes the Teds palatable to predators but it triggers secretary name which is a feel good substance in the brain so basically it can produce hallucinations and make you high can you imagine that conversation with your boss I'm really sorry and I'm just like to tell you I'm not with it this morning upping the looking total No it's work we're going to leave it there because we're going to get in trouble it's B.B.C. DEASY radio Lincolnshire. 22 minutes past 8 it's the Scott Dalton breakfast show with John O. This week Hello Scott is having. A week to do the jobs he's doing some jobs around the house in the news this morning a leading academic has found that people with learning difficulties live much shorter lives than others in the U.K. Locally one of Boston's biggest employers fresh time U.K. Is hoping it can offer jobs to some of the workers laid off at Focus he's over $200.00 jobs available at fresh time U.K.'s sports Manchester City are 2 points clear at the top of the Premier League to beating Southampton 61 at the at Etihad Stadium Chelsea are up to 2nd in the table after their 31 win at home to Crystal Palace and the weather for bonfire nights remember remember it's the 5th of November Miles today some missed patches early on quite cloudy though my old highs of 13 degrees but it will be dry so if you are heading out at 21 fires in Lincolnshire it should be a relatively nice night and I talking about China I still can't get over this talking about challenges I don't know how we've done it I was slapped in the face by a jellyfish or quote he was guided by shock because I can't I can't take it Lorraine has been in search I did the London Marathon in 2003 that is something else that I just think is. Remarkable running that far the amount when you see the London Marathon thinking how are all these people able to do that also I drove from London from Liverpool sorry to Stamboul and back in 10 days in 2005 and did a tandem skydive in 2007 the rain or the dad devil all were challenging a memorable but the skydive was definitely my favorite for even though Luna says she can still stand on a chair without holding on. Definitely won't get me doing that and John says I did a 10 K. In 37 minutes in the eighty's I did a 10 K. In 57 minutes in 2 years ago. Still I don't think I could do that now amazing and any big challenges that you've done let me know I'd love to hear from you 8000 double 65949 you can text 81 triple 3 starting message with the letters L N L this week we're looking ahead to remember its day on Sunday on the 100th anniversary of the end of the 1st World War poppies are in place at exhibitions in churches across the county we were talking about the can skate ing Poppy structure outside St James's Church in Louth beacons going to be lit many other events are planned as well Steve Holywood is a parish councillor for Colby Glen you've put up some giant poppies Steve. We have indeed yes we've got some story proper use of the right size poppies that we put around the village where the men who served from Corby Glenning World War one when we March where they lived so those that died on active service where those properties are still in the village when you identified where they lived we've been able to mark this is where they lived. People and live in the village will come to come here can see the impact of World War one on call the grand quite graphically by saying there's poppies around the streets it's a really really simple thing to do but actually something that that will mean so much to the families related to these people well and it's an enormous response with advertise on social media have to say yes it's promoted on the biggest responses we've had of people saying this is just magnificent It's a really graphic way of actually was tracing the impact of what happened and men met remembering those men as well the names on the war memorial but all the much more than that it was we've been researching them and marking where they lived in the village. I know a special service on Sunday as well been called Glenn whale day yes we have a remembrance day service on the Sunday but we have a program of activity this year to mark the time is 100 years. So we'll start with a short prayers and tolling of the church bell it 5 to 7 on Sunday morning lighting candles for the 24 men will have a normal service it quarter to 10 and then we'll have a silent procession to our war memorial with a wreath prints of the 24 men with details of their. Service record in a photo were of each of them and they'll be carried by where we planned by relatives of those men and by servicemen and servicemen and women and. Then the dance that will memorial where there was really will be attached to the woman will by those relatives and the service personnel. We then regrouped in the evening and father will be ringing the church bells as part of the national chain with bells being rung to commemorate the end of World War One. And then we'll walk back to the woman oil and on to our people in the village which will be lighting as part of the chain of big things being late and they believe there's over 1000 of them so we're pleased to be able to chill in that and like they'll be playing and we're hoping to get a good number of people there to mark the occasion conversely will I think. Where we were. Talking about the 24 men. We hope it's. A way that people feel that we've acknowledged what those men did and we'll be taking time to remember them and we obviously been working on researching them as well which means we have to bang on. A book 100. 20 or no. Steve thank you very much for that some great things happening there to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the 1st World War And that's what's happening in Corby Glenn I'll be telling you about some other things happening in Lincolnshire throughout the week on the Breakfast Show Johnno in for Scott also just remind our inside out tonight's remembrance special $730.00 B.B.C. Right let's talk more about Lincoln says Ross Edgeley they were arrived yesterday in Margate after swimming around the whole coastline of Great Britain massive massive numbers the 1st man ever to do this 300 people got to swim the last mile with him including Lorraine Carey from wintering I'm in Lincolnshire and Lorraine is on the line now what an amazing thing to be able to do this huge challenge and you were part of it it was just the most incredible experience I think I'm probably going to well up to something about . 6 back East today from my gate. And I even that my excitement it was just incredible it was incredible the man is a machine. That's really crazy and I don't know if you seen any of the picture on the press a lot but when we won out where. You go in the water with us and we always circle around every which area and smile that you see the whole time even then it was just beyond excited and you know what you said is just 157 days is you know we should be broken it should be crawling up the beach and yet there it was just super excited I know about even this morning and I'm sure it sounded exactly the same. Just like how you next day and the happiest man in the world and how he does it. Do you do triathlons you are an open water swim and a personal trainer Juliette just explain because all you know I'm kind of blinded by the numbers 15 and 700 odd miles 157 days how difficult it is what he's done how difficult easy it is but I've been trying to explain that to people and that's why for me it was worth every 2nd of the journey so the longest I swam is 5 K. And it was pretty horrible you've got a couple of hours with your head underwater and you know I was so glad to get out. Every single day 12 hours and you know it 20 miles some days it's just incomprehensible the body shouldn't be able to do it you know and mentally I think meant the way most just did most hardest part is to do that day in day out and never come back from London just on about the 3 of them together the mental state to get the physical part the mental thing is just incredible I imagine it in June as well the water is going to be a bit warmer than it is in a November hurry don't really know. What was it like cause was cold I'm hot as I'm imagining it being you know it was a really and I'm really stressed because of my swim in my wetsuit went away under September I was looking of to swim across the Humber the share as well which is a massive tick for me it's the 1st. Very rare that people get to swim across an asteroid I put my word that it was from a number of most assignments I was really nervous about how cold it was going to be clearly you can't complain about that when the money is just all the way around Britain but it was OK I don't know if that was the adrenaline and excitement and it didn't matter because he was surrounded by all 300 like minded people you know you know the way that many. Crazy wonderful people on politics and and so I don't know that the cold was just not an issue just describe the moment when it all ended so ROSS What was it like when he when he finished what were the scenes like a month or so we saw we swam out to him so we sent our 750 meters to him and he got in so it kind of felt like we're going to ourselves from it which And there were sounds really really key keeper it was so special and then he then why those back in and then he stopped those maybe like a 100 meters from the beach rightly so to let him finish by themself and to have 300 people 300 people there was a grinding with absolutely no and then obviously the same and more on the beach it was just surrounded by this wall of adulation and no it was just beautiful it was absolutely beautiful. It sounds incredible I'd like to say I'm jealous of you being in the water with him I think of that but so you. Don't mind the rain thank you so much for speaking to us this morning Lorraine Carey from wintering in Lincolnshire was one of the 300 swimmers who got to do the last mile with Ross one amazing amazing thing I just can't believe this is a real thing we're talking about feels like one of those events someone has just made up someone say we could do this a man from Lincoln has done its. I mean Suzanne as new man 45000000 boss of her beloved soccer club I didn't know she had she left a soccer club but yes personally I could not care less at all but it is one of those things that you know you read sometimes in certain newspapers life will not mention. That despite the authority telling the B.B.C. This is the case trees are most been speaking following 13000000 pounds of emergency cants made by conservative leaders in Somerset blaming a previous Labor government for the state of the camp the county's finances yes it has been difficult for them and I recognise that because of decisions that had to be taken in relation to the overall public finances because we had to saw those finances out when we 1st got into government in 2010 it was taken sometimes I think that the parents of a 15 year old girl who died of an allergic reaction to a pretty baguette have demanded a change in laws on food labeling recording a narrative verdict of the inquest into the death of Natasha. The coroner said he would write to promote the government to raise his concerns and as Crawford was at the hearing in West London The court heard that Natasha was on a trip to France as an end of term treat and bought a sandwich from present Heathrow without realising it contained sesame seeds she suffered a severe allergic reaction during the flight and died today the coroner criticized the company saying labels on fridges advising customers to ask staff about allergens were inadequate in terms of visibility he said the company's system for monitoring complaints about food at that time was inconsistent and incoherent He also highlighted the failure of the chain to carry out a formal internal investigation into Natasha's death pressure more Joe has said it is deeply sorry for Natasha's death the company's chief executive is Clive surely we cannot begin to comprehend the pain the family are felt in the grief they will continue to feel we've listened to everything the coroner. And it has his family have said this week and we will learn from it improvements will be made to know if someone says recycling and waste collection after months of ongoing issues befell the council's waste contract or promise that more vehicles and drivers will be dispatched they also apologize to any residents who have been affected by missed collections over the past couple of months the issues arose from a combination of hot weather a reduced workforce due to school holidays and they made each major change to 80 percent of household collection arrangements Councillor Peter Bryan Somerset's executive member responsible for recycling and waste the stated that the problems are by and large completely over there is another big problem within the country is a very large shortage of drivers available and. And today's part one of my favorites is the Jamaican Patty a Jamaican Patty is a pastry that contains various fillings and spices baked inside a flaky shell often tinted golden yellow with an egg yolk to Merrick it's made like a turnover but it's more savory is commonly found in Jamaica and in other areas of the Caribbean and the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua and Costa Rica traditionally filled with seasoned ground beneath Other things include chicken pork vegetable shrimp mobster fish sauce Akki mixed vegetables cheese in Jamaica the patty is often enough a full meal. When they pair it with cocoa bread the beef patty is a product of colonialism and migration developed after the introduction of the Cornish pasty in the Caribbean mixed with cumin and curries seasonings of Indian servants in Jamaica and cayenne pepper from African slaves the firecracker taste of the Scotch bonnet a hot pepper indigenous to Jamaica see all the flavor Jamaicans brought recipes for the patties northward in the 1960 S. And seventy's and many when the United States working in hospitals and in health nurses and AIDS and the passes then were found in restaurants in the New York metropolitan area but these days they're popular in the U.K. In the cities with large West Indian populations and or they sell were Jamaican parties in Bristol and put them on several occasions are very popular in Canada is well in recent years the Jamaican meat patty has been premade and frozen for mass selling all around the world have never had a Jamaican Patty I can thoroughly recommend a fantastic treat of it with maybe some potatoes. Somerset heard of Charlie in Bridgewater is just taking Ruby his black jack russell to the vets and she doesn't like air so we asked the vet if he could see her in his camper van which he did and Ruby was OK with that it was a 1st for the vets with us and I could a veterinary care that he went into the camp of than thanks to Charlie and Bridgewater Here's a poem from Sly I love living in when scum but I'm feeling quite upset because I just heard you say your leaving Somerset will only parts of Somerset and B.B.C. Some sort of some sensational programmes hello to Roger the farmer and Mark he wants Mont Blanc to go on Martin's top 10 list is the top 10 pine peaks he was trying to do a poem but he's driving his tractor Yes Safety 1st please Roger concentrate on the tractor driving then the poetry hello to Paul in Dorset I've been hugely entertained by you since your one hour Saturday show and be assured that I will be remaining loyal to the. Thank you very much Paul for your kind words too over the top let's turn our attention now to going out and about because I've covered lots of areas in Somerset as much joy I can. On my limited time and today we're going to bring down with James all support and services with James in Somerset He's written several books about the Mendips and walks in the Mendips He's a lovely guy James and this was the end of our series where we traipsed across the Mendips and ended up breaking down well for the final time this week on the program here I am in the company of the local writer and walks enthusiastic James or sob and today James we're walking up the many steps on the side of bring down we are indeed the 216 steps which take you from the beach all the way up to the down on the top and one of the finest if not the finest view on the Bristol Channel coast and as I mentioned on yesterday's program although this place is a little bit out of the ways a little bit difficult to get to it's so worth coming in are so rewarding Yes it's astonishing how underrated it is I mean I call this the gallery of the Bristol Channel coast we all know about the gallop and ensure and that is absolute spectacular a bit further along the coastline but here this is the West Country Somerset's answer this dramatic bringing down here and the future across this huge bay and you would think on a glorious summer's day you would expect to see a constant stream of people going up and down and it does get busy but it's never truly busy and really the people of the West Country should come and discover this and see more of it for themselves how many steps do you say to $16.00 and we've still got a few to go still. Well here we are James we made it to the summit of bream Dan and we should overemphasize it I mean it's quite a gentle walk up here isn't it but we're 97 meters above sea level we're on this lofty perch and we can look around and we've got a 360 degree panorama every direction that we look we can look back across western and see Western looking just the by I would say at its most attractive and we can look back at the end and in the distance we can see grass and we tour then we can continue on around with this massive expanse of undeveloped beach dying towards BEROWNE right in the corners of an A and then we can look over X. More we can see 1st the contacts actually and then next more and then the high point Dunkley beacon under stake a ball on to fall and point we're now into Devon and straight ahead of us right smack in front of a steep home where we are water 363 part it's free you can get up here it's not too far to come if you live in Bristol the surrounding area this is where people should be of presumably I mean I'm no geologist but the reason that this sticks out into the water is it's harder to rock isn't it absolutely it is carbon the 1st mountain limestone and this is believe it or not the Western idea of the Mendip Hills cut off by the river rocks and the salty marsh that runs right that adds to its feeling of a remote nurse when of course we are really as the crow flies ever so close to Western and uphill but fiddly to get up which makes it a nice remote and lovely quiet Phil but here we are on Mendip rock poking out into the Bristol Channel and I would say the Atlantic itself and just down in front of us is the 4 Tell me about the Ford snow yes the 4 now of course the whole of bring down on the 4 is now safely in the care of national of the National Trust and that's wonderful and the fort is very nicely preserved but for was built around about 1870 and it was well there was real concerns about Napoleon and any attempt that he might have to in faces a for here. There's one on steeple news out of the hole as well on lover not point over on the Welsh coastline but our force had a checkered history back in the 1920 S. It was actually a little simple cafe used to serve bread and butter and jam you can read about it in a super little book until and so forth and sure they could cater for up to 100 people can your Majesty what it really if we were rushing off to in this Summit Racing against the hundreds of people who want to get out of the chilly winds and get down into that cafe but that all changed 2nd World War was used again as a fort there were still soldiers here and then its future was more uncertain but thankfully at the turn of the millennium This was handed over to the National Trust's and there we are now we know that this is permanently preserved as an undeveloped piece of rock beautiful it is to the fort or kept for the benefit of the people of Britain and visitors to Britain I say was interesting for me James A Someone who goes to Western A lot is to see the pier over there and the aquarium really isolated surrounded by a sea of sand rather the water I mean really set back from the main channel of water yes and of course if you are on the beach or west and now you would have this overwhelming sense of not the sand and not a sense of being by the sea and that so that disappointed feel but this is the beauty of coming up on the Dinah game because you come up on the Diana low tide and you're already level with the water so you've always got even always got it here is your company and that is remark when you think here on the Bristol Channel coast you've got the 2nd greatest tidal differences anywhere in the world 49 feet between high tide and low tide with a tip with a very high spring tide That's 2nd only to the Bay of Fundy in Canada remarkable one other thing we should mention I appreciate you're not a bird watcher James but bring down together with Sam the point over there attracts a lot of birds on Passage don't like a lot of birds as a result this is a very special place for bird watchers to come. That's another thing this this tremendous diversity of appeal you can come up here simply for a while simply for the view simply for the exercise simply for the change you can come for a more definite purpose for the birdwatching purpose for the floor for the floor not to see the wind bench raise he's all here say a wonderful picnicking spot or a place for a bracing walk on any day of the year well thank you so much for walking me around the north Somerset coast over the last few days James your message has to be don't take what's on your doorstep for granted never take what's on your doorstep for granted and don't hit a home feeling sorry for yourself and thinking times are hard which they are get I a short distance on have a wonderful time all the more because it's right on your doorstep that is the thrill of it see something you've never seen before and think to yourself why if I missed it get out there and enjoy and I'd like to thank you Steve it's wonderful to share this and share it with the addition as and we've asked some fun we've had some great fun but we've seen a diversity of landscapes I want to share this with the people say you can come and enjoy it too and you'll feel so much the better for it was kind of a cover to wonderful idea call it God some cakes and I go the lovely James also bring down with my so we recorded some lovely pieces together in Somerset and it was a real pleasure meeting up with him what a super fellow. Next up on the program of the big reveal of the top 10 with Martin Alpine pates we're going to look at a simple pleasures in life. But in the meantime the Stylistics. C you feeling. We might not even mention no I wouldn't I mean part of us hated albatross you know we we won't we won't go there because it's our last show with Bristol and Somerset together and I got our heads together we've come up with a great week he's basically you can choose the music her enough mother you know we don't do that very only by the Dead Kennedys of well there you go. No I don't mean you know I mean our listener listener can choose the music certain we got phones up or text us or email us and tell us why you want to hear a piece of music but you know argument I'll go digging around for something if you want the issue to get brilliant thanks very much Rich just a fact on Sunday with MARTIN Now Martin you're on air anyway over some over the weekend on time yeah Saturday and Sunday morning from 5 o'clock with what I've been told is the best way to start your weekend morning all the events going on across the West Country we'll let you know about it more it works very hard every heart now do the top 10 in a moment Martin basically if a couple of pits a business the big river which musician who played with the Bee Gees didn't exist and you were intrigued by this one you well I thought it was Robbie Williams Now the reason for this is they were recording the Staying Alive album. Staying low Saturday Night Fever but staying alive was on anyway due to the death of the backing drummer Denis Bryan's mother in the middle of the song sessions he was unavailable and they looked for a replacement drummer and they couldn't find the shortage of qualified drummers in the area prompted the group to listen to a drum track they'd already recorded for Night Fever the group and the producer took 2 bars just 2 bars for the band that. That's it just took that and then they recorded them on a recurrent loop on a separate tape and then carried on with staying alive this accounts for the unchanging rhythm throughout the song which as a joke the group listed the drummer as Bernard loop had some people sort him out as a drummer but it was just a small bit of drumming that they got from another song well I never knew that that's on staying alive so it's a drummer that didn't even exist this is educational is that the phrase the top 10 is the top 10 alpine peaks of you ever got to the top of any of these MARTIN What partial of a peak Masel very nice at number 10 a low slide into the grand parody so in Italy because the Alps of course straddle many countries don't they don't have this one is considered one of the. Least difficult for fans to meet at peaks although it was one of the heist a sense of 1300 meters on the summit and the final 60 meters covers rocky terrain and requires a mountain in skills to take care number 9 the coal Nudo part and it's the 30th most prominent summer in the Alps and it's pronounced the coal Nudo So you say the 30th Atlas imply there's many more than 30 pics are not yet in this 29 better number 8 the grand human. Like of a human more than when you were there this one's in Switzerland and is one of the least known continents of the moment I've never heard of it so that proves it moving out number 7 or in Italy I know this will be your favorite. Massive maintain is kept by grace here on the northwest flank Yeah how they put that place here up there I don't know Italian Indian number sex offense to Dad I'm a horn Yes you heard it right yeah the fence that doesn't hold it's the 9th highest mountain and the 3rd most prominent peak in the Alps and into time someone the whole massive and surrounding places were designated a world heritage site yeah my path from number 5 the toady funny know what a beauty is while there were no postals but it is the highest on the can tune of glassiness in Switzerland OK exciting as we reach number 4 the Monte Cristo Oh yes I've heard of that Alice is so well known for its period like shape and because it's higher than all the neighboring peaks by at least 500 metres it can be seen from a great distance stands proud number 3. 0 yes that's another of my fave stands at 3 times and $798.00 metres above the Adriatic beautiful Number 2 the trigger I've done that I don't know the trick love is a centerpiece of the trickle up national park in Slovenia and Slovenia is only national park hats off to them but what if you put a number one can only be number one issue or favorite it's my favorite it's my blank moment blong Yes Originally it was a pen and then they based. In on it in there and it means white mountain. In the Alps so there you go a lovely top 10 on Monday show if you're able to listen it's the top 10 unusual breakfast food. Your favorite artist releasing new music with no way sometimes your favorite artist will release a track you don't like being told You don't have to cook tonight and love it when that happens being offered a biscuit or favorite treat I wish somebody would offer me a biscuit wearing your favorite fair. Someone helping you with the cleaning while I get no help whatsoever listening to a favorite dance tune tucking into a lush slice of sponge cake retail therapy Sasha was saying earlier on how she loves to go shopping some people do like it. Going on an exercise class or doing exercises a social event you secretly didn't want to attend didn't want to attend being cancelled yet what happens now and against lovely old people holding hands is there anything nice of the old people holding hands bumping into a friend seeing others having fun a home cooked meal after being away the smell of cake being baked a new haircut eating a big bar of chocolate a proper cup of coffee a proper cuppa tea a smiling baby the sun shining and a hug and freshly laundered sheets Well that's it then pretty much for today's program the last program on B.B.C.
