Gapay commends the anti-insurgency efforts of NOLCOM

During his visit at NOLCOM Headquarters, Gapay awarded battle campaign streamers to Joint Task Force Kaugnay and Joint Task Group Defenders for dismantling Komiteng Larangang Gerilya South Ilocos Sur; and Joint Task Force Tala and Joint Task Group Liberator for dismantling Komiteng Larangang Gerilya Quirino-Nueva Vizcaya.

“The battle streamers are manifestations of NOLCOM’s outstanding performance as far as internal security operation is concerned,” the general said.

In terms of territorial defense efforts, Gapay underscored the established facilities in Mavulis Island and the 11 sovereign markers built by NOLCOM in the chain of uninhabited islands which assert the country’s sovereignty in the northern maritime territory.

Too early to say Anti-Terror Law effective in preventing attacks in BARMM —Chief Minister

The time is not yet ripe to conclude that the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 is effective in preventing terrorist attacks in the Bangsamoro Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Chief Minister Ahod "Al Haj Murad" Ebrahim said Friday.
"The Anti-Terrorism [Law], it is still early to judge whether it will really address [terrorism in the region] but on our side, we have assured the President that we will be helping the national government in implementing this anti-terrorist law," Ebrahim said in a Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines' online conference.
He said there are still small armed groups existing in BARMM but he assured the public that the Bangsamoro government is in talks with them, including the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and the Abu Sayyaf Group.

AFP civil-military operations head goes on leave

THE head of civil-military operations of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has gone on leave to pave the way for an investigation into the publication of an erroneous list of University of the Philippines (UP) students and alumni who were killed or captured during operations against the New People’s Army (NPA).
Major General Benedict Arevalo, deputy chief of staff for civil-military operations (J7), said he was taking responsibility for the actions of his staff.
“I would like to reiterate that indeed the erroneous list was a mistake committed by J7 staff, and as the chief of Office for Civil Military Operations, J7, I personally take responsibility for their actions. This is the reason why I issued a public apology and reiterated it in my succeeding interviews,” he said.

QUEZON CITY, Jan. 29 -- The removal of sandbars to clear the constricted section of Cagayan River, known as the Magapit Narrows, and the massive planting of bamboo along its bank will begin on February 2, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary and Task Force Build Back Better chair Roy A. Cimatu announced on Wednesday.
"This is the culmination of weeks of meticulous planning and detailed coordination to ensure that each of the dredging equipment is safely transported to the sandbar sites and that bamboos are grown at critical portions of the riverbank needing immediate measures to address stream bank erosion and instability.

Gen. Gapay lauds SOLCOM for Counter Insurgency feat

CAMP AGUINALDO, Quezon CIty, Jan. 29 -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Gilbert Gapay lauded the men and women of Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM) for their counter insurgency feat during his farewell visit at Camp Guillermo Nakar, Lucena City, Quezon on January 26, 2021.
A week before his retirement, General Gapay visited the headquarters of SOLCOM where he earned his third star as the Commander of the said command. He was welcomed with military honors by its commander, Lieutenant General Antonio Parlade Jr.
During his visit he commended SOLCOM for their accomplishments on ending local communist armed conflict. SOLCOM was able to neutralize 319 Communist Terrorist Group members and dismantled guerilla front and platoons, such as Komiteng Larangang Gerilya-Cesar, Platun Silangan Sub-Regional Military Area-4C, and Platun Japson Sub-Regional Military Area-4B of Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 27) — Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, the commanding general of the Philippine Army, will soon take over the helm of the armed forces, Malacañang said Wednesday.
President Rodrigo Duterte has chosen Sobejana to succeed Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Gen. Gilbert Gapay, who will retire on February 4. The Palace has yet to release a copy of Sobejana’s appointment paper, but confirmed the news in a statement.
"We are confident that General Sobejana will continue to modernize our military and undertake reform initiatives to make the Armed Forces truly professional in its mandate as the protector of the people and the State,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said.
