California Assemblyman Ramos Announces 2024 Bill Package with Strong Tribal Emphasis

Assemblymember James C. Ramos, thefirst and only California Native American serving in the state’s legislature, on Friday announced his 2024 bill package that deals with issues ranging from public safety to youth homelessness to education to mental health services. Ramos' bill package contains a strong emphasis on inclusion of Native American issues, including the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People issue. As I enter my sixth year in the Assembly, I plan to continue the fight to address youth homelessness, mental health issues, retail theft, as well as the continuing crisis and tragedy of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People.

Legislation Introduced to Require K-12 Education to Teach Mistreatment of Native Americans

Legislation was introuduced in the California Assembly that would require the mistreatment endured by Native Americans to be taught to K-12 public school students in the state.California Assemblymember James C. Ramos, the first California Native American elected to the legislature, introduced AB 1703, the California Indian Education Act, on Thursday. Under the proposed measure, when teaching about the Spanish Mission and Gold Rush Eras, California public schools would be required to teach the true history of the impact on California Native Americans during those periods.
