does justice look like to you? well, everything is beautiful and rebuilt and restored. you know, we think it is just time now that we have justice on all of that to where we can live all our life. and that is the reidout . all in with chris hayes starts now. tonight on all in day people are saying to themselves, where we better off four years ago or are we better off now and it wasn t even close. the greatest confidence game ever played. voters believe they were better off during trump s term than biden s. we are not better off today than we were four years ago. tonight, from crime to the economy and beyond how a political party led by a criminal is conning america. then you, you are working for a felon. a felon. the maga scandal machine and today s contempt about for the attorney general. and the senate push to do something about the ethics crisis in the supreme court. the highest court in the land should not and could not have the lowest ethical standards. when all in starts right now. good evening from new york, i am chris hayes. as we approach the first debate of a presidential election season, earlier than normal between joe biden and donald trump, it is clear that trump and the republican pitch to voters is fundamentally a con job. i mean that in the most literal sense. the term comes from so-called confidence man, fixtures in the late 18th and 19th century who swindled the victims with their confidence. right now that all s bravado is the defining feature of donald trump s attempt to win back the oval office. remember, this is the man who tried to destroy our constitutional republic live on national television and who utterly failed in overseeing the one national crisis he had to guide the nation through the pandemic. and yet trump and his surrogates are constantly telling voters to ask themselves a question, are you better off than you were four years ago? are you better off than you were four years ago? i don t think joe biden can run on the question of are you better off than you were four years ago. that is one question he is praying that he never hears. are you better under four years of joe biden were four years of donald trump. you know, people are saying to themselves are we better off four years ago or are we better off now and it wasn t even close. that, by the way, was all from the past week. we have been running a series on all in responding to that question because the events of four years ago were so shocking, unprecedented, and traumatic. i think a lot of people, i would say most people including myself, have blocked it out. again, i get it. i don t want to think about sitting inside trying to homeschool my kids or attending zuma for my dearly departed uncle or the images of packed hospitals and dying saying goodbye to their loved ones on ipads. of course the fact that most people don t want to think too much about 2020 is an enormous advantage for republicans and the trump campaign who are attempting to pull off this con job. their aim is to kind of magically replace her memory. to distract you from the fact that four years ago we were all living in the midst of disaster. tonight the country has reached another sobering milestone in the coronavirus pandemic, surpassing 2 million cases and this warning sign. hospitalizations are surging in many states. we will start our rallies back up now. we had a tremendous run at rallies. i don t think there has been an empty seat. i think one in texas. we are going to arizona. texas and arizona among nine states reporting a jump in hospitalizations, the best indicator of the viruses toll. we are really doing a financial comeback. the jobs numbers are fantastic. 1.5 million people filed front employment last week, almost 43 million since the pandemic began. i think the economy next year will be maybe the best it has ever been. we are already seeing the stock market going up, because you have a lot of smart people betting on exactly what i m saying. a selloff from wall street amid new concerns about the continuing spread of covid-19. the dow plunging more than 1800 points, its biggest drop in three months. a very important time in our country. a lot of things are happening and i think when it all ends up it is going to end up very good for everybody. there is growing concern tonight that restricting restrictions is causing an increase in covid-19 cases. all lives are precious, not just the people infected by covid, but also the people who are being driven to this because of the lockdown. what is happening in some of those places. that shut down. the poverty rate is going up. what are people going to do if they don t have jobs to go to to earn a living in order to take care of their families? that is the main reason. all of these scare tactics, they don t work this time around. they will not work. i should note one week after herman cain made that appearance on fox news, he attended donald trump s indoor rally. a big, indoor rally in the midst of covid in tulsa, oklahoma and by the end of june he was hospitalized with covid and died on july 30 at the age of 74. naturally every time we do one of these segments i find that looking back at four years ago brings a lot of emotion. most people divide recent history into the before times and the after times, myself included. a lot of us feel nostalgia for the before times and that is exactly what donald trump and his allies are using to build their lie about what really happened. to erase our real memories and implant false ones. that is their project and it has been unnervingly effective so far. four years ago in june, 2020 while we were living through the pandemic donald trump s approval rating was 42%. and when a new poll, 47% of americans say they approve of the job that trump did as president. it is not much, but those five points are basically the margin of the entire election and they are accomplishing that through flat out lies about what is actually happening. take a listen to missouri senator josh hawley doing this today. he s going to run on his record from four years ago versus biden right now. gas under president biden, up 55%. groceries, up 40%. wages down 3%. that is the campaign. that is before we get to crime, before we get to the border. sorry, josh hawley. wages are up. average hourly earnings are actually up 17% from may, 2020 two 2024 in nominal terms, like groceries and stuff. wages have also outpaced inflation for the past 13 months as the washington post pointed out today. crime is way down. look at what has happened with the homicide rate. in 2020 when donald trump was president, he ushered in under his presidency the largest ever one year jump, spiking 30%. by 2023 the homicide rate had tumbled 19% to 5.3 per 100,000 people. new data shows the rate continues to drop dramatically, down another 20 another 26% in the first quarter from the same time period last year. gas prices, are, i will admit, overall higher than they were in the summer of 2020. why were they low then? no one was traveling anywhere. okay? that is why there were cheap gas prices. refrigerator trucks full of cadavers, yeah, the gas prices were low. and they spiked up in the early part of the biden administration with the war in ukraine, but they have been trending in the right direction and continue to fall even as the summer travel season heats up. grocery prices are coming down. not just with inflation which cooled to 3.3% today, but retailers are actually slashing prices on thousands of islands. of items. again, they spiked during the pandemic like they did everywhere in the world, but they are on the right trajectory now and all of this is happening under the incumbent, joe biden. and we are not losing thousands of americans per day to a deadly pandemic. we do not live in a nation in the throes of constant disorder. this time four years ago we were living through the televised murder of george lloyd and the protestant police response that followed while then president trump called for sending in troops. across the country was started as peaceful gatherings protesting the death of george floyd evolved into destruction. from new york, where police and protesters squared off in the streets, to portland where the mayor issued a state of emergency and a city curfew. the nation erupted into scenes of chaos. violence. and widespread destruction into the early morning hours. in some of the nation s biggest cities, the night spiraled out of control early. we had to run rubber bullets. my cameraman has been hit. we have also seen tear gas being used. here we go again. this is exactly what it looks like. oh. whoa. can you hear us? are you okay? reporter: we are surrounded by the police and you saw the way that they dealt with my cameraman. we don t know who they are targeting at the moment. i said you have to dominate the streets. you can t let that happen and we are doing it with compassion, if you think about it. we are dominating the street with compassion. all that happens under the watch of president donald trump. we cannot say or hear that and if he returns to power i am telling you it is a safe bet that we will return to trauma and chaos. she is a democratic strategist who served as an advisor for the 2020 campaign. they both join me now. doug, i wanted to talk to you because in some ways history and recent history is part of what is being contested in this campaign. the legacy of the first trump year, trump term, and particularly 2020, the four years ago in the famous formulation, as a historian and historian and presidential elections, how do you see it? i think january 6 is such a seminal event and for the days after it seemed like trump was toast. everybody was furious that insurrectionists, but lo and behold suddenly mitch mcconnell came back to trump and lindsey graham and they sort of built this coalition and what is it? it is really anti-federal government. that is what trump represents now. that is why we are seeing the american flag hung upside down by conservative justices. and biden is trying to be part of a tradition, presidents club, of all of the other presidents. you saw on june 6, where ronald reagan is. by then saying i represent all of this and trump is sort of the anti-federal government, anger over covid. and that people still feel that their lives became topsy-turvy and they are going to punish whoever the incumbent is. so it is hard for biden to get traction even though as you said, numbers on the economy are good. we are much better off. he has shown great leadership, but communicating that to the people when there is this much frenzy on social media and hatred toward the federal government, it is an uphill battle for biden to get reelected. i was thinking about 2010, the elections in which of course democrats lost. the tea party uprising. a lot of that was something similar was happening. which is people were frustrated with the aftermath of the financial crisis ushered in by the republican party. democrats were the incumbent party and they took it out against the democrats and it was sort of classic like we don t like the status quo because things are bad and they were bad, but the reason they were bad is because what had been passed on. there is something similar here where the things people don t like him a totally understandably, the shocks that came out of covid were not the doing of joe biden. subsequent administrations had to fix that and people still feel frustrated with the pace that is happening. it s interesting that you bring up what happened in 2010 because i think of the history of the democratic party. to clean up the miss of the republican party and as democrats clean up the miss they have to message against republicans who are acting as if they want the party that let estate into it. four years ago donald trump was telling people to drink leach to cure covid while he was having superspreader events. four years ago people were in their homes watching what you just did in a montage, but we were watching that every day for 24 hours, not knowing when we would see our loved ones and then trying to figure out who we were going to vote for when it comes to the president to get us out of this. you know, policy for people to feel it in their pocket books takes a very long time and while you mentioned some great reports for the biden administration, even the global economic report this week that said the global economy is strong because the u.s. economy is getting strong, but people are not feeling that yet. that is not the fault of president biden. that is the unregulated corporations that republicans are blocking anything democrats want to do around this. this debate coming up, president biden will have to figure out how to message that as well as the surrogates and people talking about this between now and election day so people understand how they are not feeling this, even though these historic numbers are bringing us back to a place that the american people really want to be. you know, doug, i think that before times nostalgia is powerful and i think there is another thing in play here and i would like to get your thoughts on it. my view of trump was always that this is a person who is so unsuited to the job above all else that if and when a crisis comes it will be the worst possible response and then covid happened and it was borne out. i think a lot of people think 2020 is a mulligan. it was a meteor that hit earth and they sort of blocked out the degree of insanity in the crisis management that happened that year and i wonder if you think it is possible to remind them or people are so resistant to thinking about it. i think you can and it is going to be imperative that joe biden reminds people, particularly during the upcoming debate with trump. trump has gone through so many legal jeopardy moments and years have gone by and we are running it on television all the time and you have the 34 felony conventions convictions. even when that happens some democrats were saying don t rub it in trump s base. of course you have to rub it in his face. you have to call him a felon. biden has struggled i think with messaging in the sense of this economy that has been building. he called it a transitory pain we were having at one point and then it was bidenomics. instead they have to lay out that our economy is doing well. yes, i feel your pain at milk, groceries, gas, but he has to be the happy warrior like fdr. at times he does that. i felt that when he was in france, talking about freedom and democracy, but other times he gets in a bit of a defensive crouch. you can t be gerald ford with whip inflation now buttons. you can t be jimmy carter, the malaise or crisis of confidence. presidents get reelected with a sense of victory and optimism and better times are yet to come and obama when he ran, he had the killing of osama bin laden which gave him the foreign policy credential that people clearly understood. the revenge of the 9/11 disaster. the sort of past versus future obviously you have two individuals, one is who is 78 and the other is 81. in some ways donald trump is the recent past and i do wonder if because the past four years have been so dramatic and disruptive, people want to go back in time and that is part of the allure. i think people want to go back in time when there was what they felt was more certainty. with covid there was such uncertainty. the racial unrest and then we saw january 6. hindsight is 2020 and for some reason some people as though they people feel as though they were better under donald trump. that wasn t the case. i think we have to make sure that president biden, and i hope his campaign is listening, that he simplifies his message. he has always been the comforter right next to president obama. be that president and then talk about the ways not only has it gotten folks out of this, but he will continue to do so if they give him four more years. along with a congress and senate to keep doing this him to go after his father. yesterday hunter biden got convicted in federal court. the scandal machine has basically run out of fuel and now out of desperation republicans are demanding attorney general merrick garland release the audiotape of president biden s interview with special counsel robert hur. what? even the republicans already have the transcript. today they voted to hold the attorney general in contempt. congressman joe neguse of colorado is assistant democratic leader and member of the judiciary committee and joins me now. congressman, what was this all about? good evening and good to be with you, chris. unfortunately it is a sad state of affairs in washington, d.c. as extreme house republicans have once again found a way to weaponize what are very constitutional and serious tools that the congress has at its disposal. in this case, as you articulated, they pursued a baseless contempt resolution against the attorney general. by way of background as many of your viewers already know, the attorney general fully complied with the requests made by the congress. the department of justice produced over 90,000 pages of documents with respect to this inquiry. more by the way, chris, then the entire department of justice provided during the course of the trump administration and also produced the transcript itself of the president s conversation with the special counsel. the contextual reasons house republicans offered for purposes of the audio were clearly a smokescreen for what was a political exercise. they wanted audiotapes to use them for a campaign commercial and the attorney general cited a number of reasons why ultimately that tape could not be provided. the president invoked executive privilege and republicans in the house of course know that to be the case, but they proceeded anyway. unfortunately i think it is shameful and disgraceful and we will have to see what comes next in the clown show that they have perpetrated on the american people right now. you know, two things i want to note. the republican who voted against it said as a former prosecutor i cannot in good conscience support a position to score political points. the american people expect congress to work for them and solve policy problems. enough is enough. second of all i want to make sure that i have the events right. merrick garland appoints a special counsel to investigate the president. the man that he appoints is a republican who is a donald trump appointee in the justice department. this individual asks for an interview which the president voluntarily complies with i think for nine hours despite the fact that donald trump never gave an interview to robert mueller. he then uses parts of that interview to take political shots at him in the opening introduction. they release the transcript and all of this is deemed, what? partisan by the republicans? how far can you possibly go? the answer is nowhere. there is nothing you can do. that is the question and it is an open question. you articulated the timeline well. i would offer two amendments. one, this attorney general produced as you know the special counsel report in full, unredacted. very different compared to attorney general bill burr. i remember as we dealt with subterfuge with respect to the special counsel investigation and in this case the special counsel testified in front of my committee, as did the attorney general as recently as last week. this is a farce. house republicans know that. it is a way for them to up skate their lack of days for them to obfuscate their lack of an agenda. they prefer to spend time on these political games, which is unfortunate. it is not a coincidence the timing between hunter biden s conviction yesterday and this. this is the new york times reporting. mister trump who aggressively attacked hunter biden in the 2020 election has changed his mind about doing so now. trump said republicans needed to be careful not to go overboard because it could elicit sympathy and make people view the president as a caring father. so they spend years chasing this guy to the ends of the earth. they successfully, let s be clear, they basically successfully control this investigation. the prosecution happens and now it is like we ve got to light a new fire because that one has burned out. look, in their view the circus must continue. their message is not resonating with the american people, so as a result they will continue pursuing political retribution at every turn and of course this is not the first time. they pursued seven or eight different impeachment resolutions at various points in the last 18 months against a variety of cabinet officials. they impeached secretary mayorkas. that was dispensed in the senate without a trial. the attempted impeachment of president biden failed. so i have no doubt that unfortunately these games are going to continue for some time. hope springs eternal that perhaps some in the republican caucus will do what representative joyce did today and ultimately speak truth to power and do the right thing and join us in getting back to the business of the house. package should pass. senator, it is good to have you on. first, tell me what the act fix what the ethics package, what would it do? it is so straightforward, chris. it says they would have to have a binding code of ethics at least as strong as the house or senate has. what applies to the executive branch, what applies to other judges, what applies to members of the house and senate applies to the supremes as well. that is like what congressman raskin and ocasio- cortez were talking about. you could not do it as a senator. you could not do it as a mid- level engineer at the department of the interior and you could not do it as any other federal judge. chris, it is just phenomenal. think about what this looks like. it is mega yacht trips. indonesia. tuition for family members. luxury rvs. helicopter flights. you name it. $6 million of gifts over the last 20 years. here is the scenario. for an average person hauled into court and somebody sues you and you find out the person suing you has been going on fishing trips to alaska with the judge. would you think you are getting a fair shake? that there is any possibility of justice in that situation? the answer is absolutely not. that is a profoundly corrupt court and that is what we have today. i think, well, i don t know what the logic is but i think republicans say this is all partisan. the reason you are doing this is because you don t like the rulings in the court, you don t like the ideology, so you are trying to attack legitimacy to a road power for purely ideological and partisan reasons. certainly if republicans want this court to have the force that comes with integrity and respect of the american people, then they should be the first to step forward to clean up this miss. it is in fact a miss and certainly i believe that these justices on the right who were trained and selected by the federalist society to deliver power on a plate to corporations in america, are deeply, profoundly warping the constitution. in favor of corporations and against consumers and environmental laws and many other things. this issue of accepting massive gifts from people who have issues before the court, that stands on its own. separate from any dispute one might have. i want to redo something that sam alito said last summer in an interview with the wall street journal to a lawyer and a writer there. he said i know this is a controversial view, but i m willing to say it, he says. no provision in the constitution gives congress the authority to regulate the supreme court, period. what do you think of that? it is called legislation and the constitution does give legislation power to the congress. it gives the ability to put a code of ethics on the executive branch. yes a president can veto it, but we can override that veto. certainly there was a sense of while the constitution said little about what the court system would look like, there were massive decisions made by congress to decide how the judiciary would be structured and run. so absolutely that does not pass any sort of common sense or legal examination. final question and quickly. on the question of having the chief justice come before the senate. he has basically blown off an inquiry from the chair of the judiciary committee who reached out to him. samuel alito has written to say i am not recusing myself. basically they are like, you are not the boss of us and we don t have to listen to anything you say. is that a tolerable equilibrium? it is not, because they are basically saying we have the right to be corrupt and you can t do anything about it and that deeply undermines a key institution in our country in which we need to have a sense of respect. a sense that it delivers the balls and strikes, as justice roberts once said in his confirmation hearings. right now we are getting profound conflict of interest and that is really sad to hear. chris, here is the thing. justice roberts, in running this court, he has to recognize that he is failing in his responsibility to run this court in a fashion which delivers fairness and a sense of integrity to the american people. one jeff merkley, inc. s very much. we ask your rheumatologist for rinvoq. and take back what s yours. abbvie could help you save. it has been 250 days since the october 7th attacks, and an estimated 120 israeli hostages still remain in gaza. president biden, the u.n. security council, and the governments of qatar and egypt are all still pushing for a negotiated ceasefire that would release all the remaining hostages of the fate of that deal remains unclear. 120 hostages have been returned to israel alive that. includes 116 released as part of the brief pause in fighting that happened last november, as well as the four who were rescued in a military operation last weekend that also left nearly 300 palestinians dead, according to the gaza health ministry. since the conflict began, family members of many hostages have urged israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and his government to come to a deal for the hostages release. organizing, protesting, meeting with leaders both in iz xrael the u.s., and now one of those groups has written an open letter to american jewish organizations asking their help to press netanyahu to end the war and accept the deal that s on the table, saying israelis are being held hostage, not just our families who are held by hamas in gaza, we are always hostage to bibi s actions. he is risking the lives of our soldiers. he is jeopardizing the lives of our hostages. he is endangering us all. a spokesman for those families a critic of the netanyahu government. multiple members of his family were taken by hamas on october 7th. three of his relatives were released in that initial swap last year, but his uncle remains in captivity where he recently turned 79. and he joins me now. it s really an honor to have you, and i want to thank you for joining us. i want to start just by asking you how your family is doing. how those released in november are coping, how you are coping with your uncle s continued absence. well, thank you for having me first. my family members are trying to cope, but you know, everything is in, like, this static mode because we are still waiting for abraham to come back. if he comes back, nothing can start moving into a phase, so day by day, i guess. this is the way a lot of families, not just my family, of course, a lot of families are feeling this way. and we are waiting for this issue to be resolved, and it s been taking so long. it s amazing. there are sort of two stories i ve heard or two sort of arguments about a ceasefire deal. one is that hamas won t accept one on the terms that israel would find acceptable, and that the head of the military commander in hamas wants to keep the war going. the other is that it s not worth a deal prematurely if it means a cessation of hostilities before eradicating hamas. and as someone who has a family member there and has been organizing, what is your demand, your request, your ask of your government on this negotiation? first and foremost, a ceasefire. first and foremost, a ceasefire. this is elementary. this is like when there was a ceasefire, hostages came back. now, they happen here and there, they are not a strategic solution to the problem of 120 people still kept in captivity. you know, during seven months of military operation israel succeeded in releasing seven hostages alive. this is, you know, a pace of one hostage a month. eight months, even. so 120 hostages would take ten years time. the hostages have no time. the sanitary conditions are nonexistent. the health is deteriorating by the day. physical and mental. and we must find a way to bring them back home as soon as possible. these are not, you know, these are not only young people, these are elderly people, grandfathers and parents and uncles and people that were taken from their beds at 7:00 a.m. on a saturday, you know, in their pajamas and barefoot sometimes, yeah. in the u.s., one of the things that people there has been kind of a joining of the notion of the war and the justness of it and doing it on behalf of the hostages. many people feel that the war is on behalf of the hostages, and people think that those, you know, who are calling for ceasefire are betraying them or forgetting about them. and you wrote this open letter that basically argued the opposite. and so for people that are people of good faith across the spectrum on this very contested issue, i want to hear your argument to them as a family member. sure, sure. first, again, a ceasefire. why? the thing that endangers the hostages the most right now, idf bombing. this has been from october 8th ongoing where my 9-year-old cousin s son was asked during an interview after he has spent 49 days in gaza captivity, he was asked what do you feel most about your grandfather still being there? without hesitation he answered the idf bombing. the idf bombing endangers the hostages, and the idf bombing, actually, we know about 14 hostages that were killed either by direct hit by the idf or, you know, as after an idf attack, the attackers needed to evacuate the space. they killed them, so you know, the military operation endangers the hostages. it got seven hostages out, 14, at least, dead, and this the whole military maneuver is not getting it s not for the hostages at all. it s not helping them. on the contrary, it gets them further and further away from the hostage deal, further and further away from getting united with their loved ones. because we know that the conditions for the hostage exchange or the prisoners exchange or whatever you want to call this, getting them back home is first, ceasefire. and by waging this war from day one, the israel government initiatives of this military operation is only keeping us apart, keeping us further and further apart. at the beginning it was only northern gaza, then it was rafah, and before that it was elsewhere, and we re just getting further and further apart from a solution to this problem, because the solution should start with a ceasefire. this is, you know, logical and basic. a spokesperson for the group of hostage, his uncle held by hamas in gaza. i can t thank you enough for making time for us. we re all thinking about you and your family. thank you very much. and we pray for the safe return of all of the hostages as soon as possible. this is a humanitarian issue. this is not some political issue, and people trying to make this a political issue, especially, the government trying to make this political. no, this is a humanitarian crisis. and everything should be done to get them back as soon as possible. thank you very much. that is all in on this wednesday night. alex wagner tonight starts right now. good evening, alex. 250 days, just unbelievable this is where we are. thank you, my friend, as always. so i want to start with a story that in any other universe would have absolutely nothing to do with politics or anything even approximating controversy. the kind of news we all used to read or hear and accept. but in the post-trump era, this

what happened? inside the delaware courtroom earlier, abruptly changed his plants is only surviving son, hunter biden was convicted on all three felony gun charges just that he was facing today. hours later, hunter biden was standing on the tarmac, as you can see here, to greet his father when marine one landed in delaware it was striking to see the two of them embrace for the first time since that guilty verdict came down. in his only comment so far on the matter, president biden said, in part in his statement i am the president, but i am also a dad because he also praised his son for overcoming a battle with drug addiction. but this conviction also comes in the middle of a presidential election. there was also a message tonight and biden statement regarding his role as president he said that he will accept the outcome of this case, that he does accepted and they also respect the judicial process, seeming to reiterate a promise that he made last week that he won t part in. hunter biden but as biden balances both being an english parent and president in-between the verdict and that we re union that you just saw there on the tarmac. he also gave a speech on gun safety in washington it s time once again, do what i did when i was a senator, ban assault weapons before that speech, that was preplanned. i should note before the verdict came down this morning, it was in the delaware courtroom where the jury s decision on hunter biden was unanimous, guilty but notably three jurors told cnn after that they question whether or not these charges should have been brought at all a fourth, that was known to only us as juror number ten, said no politics were at play when they were deliberating their decision pressure, inviting never really even came in to play for me. you kinda put that out of your mind. politics was not even spoken about the first family was not even spoken about. it was all it was all about hunter and of course, as we know it, as far from over for hunter biden, he is facing sentencing on the gun conviction that is going to come at the height of the general presidential election and another potentially even more serious trial on tax charges. this fall. few people know more about the personal toll that this is taken on president biden than my source tonight. evan owls knows is one of the country s foremost biden biographers and a cnn contributor. he is the author of joe biden, their life, the run and what matters now and having joins me now, i mean, there s basically no precedent for what we are seeing right now. a president s a sitting president s immediate family member has never been convicted on any kind of crime while they were in office. and i just wonder what you make of it, what stood out to you have how president biden reacted today? yeah, it is something extraordinary to see. i mean, he is balancing these two distinct roles as father and as president and on some level, this combination of private life and public life has been at the center of his relationship with hunter since hunter was a baby after all you remember, of course, his mother was killed in that car accident when he was a toddler, joe biden at that point was between being elected and being sworn into the senate his hunters entire life has been in some ways straddling the struggles, the privileges, the choices, the risks that come with that. and i think of this tonight is a moment in some ways, it s part of this long arc, this really sort of epic american political story. yeah. i mean, the family seemed surprised when this came down today. it did it happened relatively quickly. hunter biden himself is not even at the courthouse today and you saw them them rushing back in there and including the first lady, jill biden. but after we didn t see any of this anguish or they re real response in front of the cameras. at least we saw the embracing the tarmac what do you think it s like behind closed doors and wilmington tonight? yeah. they ve got abundant experience of tragedy on some level, and tragedy is not to be exculpatory here when nobody and least of all, joe biden is saying that hunter biden didn t make choices that lead to this result. but they have also learned over the years about how you get through this. they turn inward. they have this. it s not a coincidence that they re going to wilmington for this. that s sort of the ancestral homeland and they go there and they meet as a family. they have these traditions of these family meetings and the line that you often hear in politics from biden is that through pain you have to find purpose. it can sound like it s a line, except that for him, it is at the core of how he gets through this. and i can tell you that is no question what he is telling the other members of his family that if we re going to get through this part of our purpose is to demonstrate that nobody is above the law that a president does not interfere in the activity because of the court that a jury can still find its way to a result even in a time of intense partisanship, you ve spent a lot of time with biden. i and his family as you are writing your book, did you ever think that you d see a day like today? i ll be frank. no, i think when i first started interviewing joe biden back in 2014, a decade ago, beau biden was alive. it was actually kind of a hopeful moment in the course of his treatment. they thought that they might have had some good news. and in so many ways, this story, the one we are inhabiting today is the result of beau biden s death in 2015. it was like a bomb that went off in that family and i have to say one of the things we learned from this trial and it really was a revelation even to people who know the family well was the depth to which the impact of addiction rippled all the way through hallie biden, as we heard, of course, also ended up involved with crack cocaine. it was just a a period of his life and i think as as political observers, we study president s not only because it helps us understand the choices they in make the pressures that they re under. but it s also a reflection of ourselves, of our country and our time and what this family was going through between 2015 and 2021 and all toya all the way up to today is in itself a very american story as someone who studies biden. i mean, what is it? what did you take away from? they already had this pre-planned event on gun safety at the white house, which i think a lot of people were thinking to themselves. i mean, the timing here is unbelievable, but he came out, he didn t give the full speech. she actually was going to talk about a new gun restrictions that the doj has enacted what that has resulted in. he did not he spoke about it more broadly. his speech that had been previously planned, but he didn t seem to give anything away. i don t want i saw that speech. yeah, not a word. i think there s a way that he has drawn this bright line between what s happening with the family and what s happening in politics. and it can almost look, i think a little awkward because people are expecting him to talk about this thing in his life. but he is so concerned that it will be turned into a talking point by his opponent that i think he s almost going out of his way not to talk about well, i wonder how, how does a way on him when he hears three jurors who told cnn obviously they voted. this was unanimous. they voted to convict, but they were asking themselves if this would have been brought it all had he not been a hunter biden. that s been a fact for awhile. i mean, joe biden is said to have told people around him that he knows that had he not continued on in politics, that his son might not be facing the charges that must really weigh on it. i think to tap that i think it s a very heavy burden and look the joe biden s decision to be in public life as long as he has has added to the pressure on hunter biden, joe biden has always known for a long time that the gene of addiction, which is in this family is in hunter biden his life and by staying in politics, by being is exposed as they are in some ways, it has put pressures on hunter biden, and i do think that weighs on the president. and obviously officers coming in the middle of the election year, we will talk in a second about how republicans are handling this. but how does biden handle this at the debate? i don t think anyone thinks it s gonna have a huge impact on the election, but we ll see, but how does he handle it for the debate trump, who of course, at the last debate brought up a hunter biden. i think in the broader sense, there is a way in which this adds to the psychic load of what he is contending with. i mean, if you think about the middle please do you think about the us and now of course, within his own family, actually though as a pro, as a political matter and in the debate that s actually an area where joe biden knows how to handle this. you remember in 2020 there was a moment when he essentially telegraph very clearly back-off. i love my son and actually, and the data in the campaign was clear about this. that was a moment that americans responded to. i think there is some piece of the public that says we want to see not only that president, but also that dad. yeah. everyone else and it s great to have you on this. thank you for joining us. pleasure. of course, as i mentioned, the fallout from this verdict is already happening in a fast and furious way from capitol hill all the way to mar-a-lago. tonight, joining us here also, andrew mccabe, the former fbi deputy director and cnn senior law enforcement analyst, ashley allison, scene and political commentator and the former coalitions director for the 2020 biden campaign. and also david urban, cnn, senior political commentator and former trump campaign adviser. so we really got the entire gamut here. and andrew mccabe. but let me start with you because we did hear from the special counsel, david weiss today, someone we have not heard from very often in this case, he came out and spoke after the guilty verdict no one in this country is above the law everyone must be accountable for their actions. even this defendant however hunter biden, should be no more accountable than any other citizen convicted of this same conduct obviously, andrew mccabe, a hunter biden s legal team has made clear they re going to challenge this, but this is not the end of the legal exposure. legal troubles front or biden. he s got another case pending this november or this fall yeah katelyn, he s not out of the woods by a long shot. the case that he has coming up in september on the tax charges very serious case, and it s one that on its own brings the threat of much more extensive potential jail time. now, of course, they ll go into that case, having already been convicted of another felony, so he s no longer considered a first-time offender in the resolution of the tax case, which could make his penalties if he s convicted even more intense okay. so you do believe age or became that it would it could impact the outcome of the case potentially yeah, there s no question. he goes into that case now is having been recently convicted of another totally unrelated offense. so that s not a good thing for him. i think it was interesting that weiss made those comments about the fact that hunter biden should not be held more accountable than anybody else there s no question that this the trial was conducted in the way you would expect to see any criminal trial conducted. the prosecutors had an overwhelming amount of evidence. their case went in very smoothly. the defense had a very, very limited range of motion to work with here, trying to get the jury to basically thread the eye of a needle and focus on the fact that hunter allegedly wasn t taking drugs the day he bought the gun that was kind of a hail mary pass and obviously didn t work for them. all of that aside, despite the validity of this jury verdict, i think mr. weiss is going to have some really tough questions to answer in the long run about the broader decisions that he made along this path. why he offered such a favorable plea deal that he then walked away from and wouldn t give back to the defendant once when he asked her that initially. so there s a lot of questions about why hunter biden was held to this standard. maybe prosecuted in a way that most other defendants who might be who were allegedly involved in similar conduct would not have been held to the same standard. those questions are still i think hanging out there for me. yeah, weiss, it we don t often see a case like this broad as we ve noted and looked at the historical context david, can we talk about how the trump campaign responded to this day? because obviously republicans talk about hunter biden a lot, but this i noticed this today with the trump campaign where they first released a version of the state of a statement on what happened criticizing biden, criticizing his family, essentially saying that hunter biden should have been charged with with other things. but at the end, on the initial statement, they said, quote, as for hunter, we wish him well, in his recovery and legal affairs okay. but then they retracted that and put out another one striking that last line and no longer wishing him well and then resending the statement all together. what do you make of that? well well, kaitlan, i like i like the first version better, right? obviously, nobody wants to see anybody languish in an addiction and spiral downward any more than they already have been. and is well chronicled on the laptop and is andrew pointed out correctly, september 5, hunter biden stands trial. again on these tax charges, which is what are much more serious, they re seven charges, i think three felonies and for misdemeanor charges, he is facing for not paying over $1,000,000.5 in taxes over a five-year period on $7,000,000 earned and so he s he s in for, some rough sledding ahead and two, your earlier get to evan s point earlier, it s going to be right in the middle of that campaign, september 5th. and it was kinda right when people are getting ramped up in campaign season. and that s gonna be weighing heavily on joe biden mind, he is not campaigning and it s going to be in the news every day is american goods are contemplating what they re gonna do. i don t think it s going to have a positive impact on who votes for whom, but people republicans are going to point back to the laptop and the 50 plus national security individuals who said the laptop was rushing russian interference camp the pain and it wasn t real. and in this case, the laptop with the fbi said laptop was real. israel could be so it s going to provide a bunch of fodder for the campaigns. for the republican campaign moving forward. yeah. i just wanted to when we ve had any of those officials who ve signed that letter, james clapper, brennan, we ve talked to them about putting their name on that and what not but ashley, in the sense of this of what we re hearing from republicans and then struggling to kind respond to this. some of them are saying that they believe that conviction is kind of dumb in the words of one of them. in other situations they ve been arguing there was this two-tiered system of justice, but, but i mean the president s son was just convicted by his justice department yeah. i mean, it s interesting to see republicans contort themselves in certain moments to make the story work for them. downtown was prosecuted. will the state a state-level charge not joe biden, they blamed joe biden now, hunter hunter biden. joe biden s son is prosecuted by the department of justice, who joe biden are president nominated attorney general, and they still are not satisfied i love i think at the end of the day, i agree with david in terms of there will be another case that hunter biden and involved in. and i do not think that these outcomes of the case particularly related to joe biden, son joe biden, like donald trump, but joe biden s son will be determined them on how voters actually the decide to vote in the fall. but what i do get allows an opportunity to do is to draw a contrast. yet again, on how the two 21 former president, one current president, who both our fathers approach the situation, talk about the situation, handled it with compassion or lack of compassion, handle it with honesty. and i think that will be in there ll be opportunity hey, this fall to see the state contrast how one side handles it versus the other. well, and we heard from the house speaker mike johnson on this listen to what he told manu raju today. david mr. speaker, you ve been saying two-tier system of justice for some time. here s the president sayyed being convicted on three counts as that undercut your it doesn t every case is different and clearly the evidence is overwhelming here i don t think that s the case and the trump trials and all the charges because it had been brought against that have been obviously brought for political purposes. a hunter biden is a separate instance okay. but david, is that really i mean, it does undercut the claims that it s a two tiered system what it does, it look, everyone s saying, look, two things can be true here, right? people are saying, oh, this wouldn t have been brought if hunter biden wasn t joe biden? in sun, but yet nobody is saying that same thing, right? except maybe for fareed zakaria, that nobody would have brought the case against donald trump if you weren t his name work donald trump so possibly both those things are true in this and these both cases, and i think that s what s getting republicans goats here. andrew mccabe, can i just get your thought on this? i mean, you were the deputy director vector of the fbi. how do you view this in the sense of, you the rule of law and justice system overall and how that is. but this new political weapon at the center of everything caitlin, i spent my entire professional life in it. the justice system in this country is not perfect. it s got a lot of flaws, but it is not two tiered. i have also seen that people who have outcomes, they don t like, generally don t like the system. and people who have favorable outcomes, they like it this politics aside, that s basically what shapes people s opinions i guess the speaker believes that his own judgments about the quality of evidence in each individual prosecution, which he admits they re all very different, his own judgment about those things should supersede the decisions of judges and juries. i disagree with that but i guess we ll just have to leave it there and i should note figure johnson was not actually in the courtroom. we were listening to all of that evidence, of course, andrey cave, ashley, i ll send david urban great to have you pushing through the primaries. people who cannot win general elections, but who pledged fealty to him. that s not a good way to build and grow a party without relationships still is ic as ever, we re also learning that another relationship may be on the verge of thawing out donald trump and senator mitch mcconnell will share the same air for the first time in nearly four years this week as after mcconnell confirmed to cnn today that he will be at that meeting, trump is having with senate republicans in washington on thursday. now this is so notable because donald trump and mitch mcconnell have not spoken since december of 2020 it was shortly before the january 6 attack on the capitol for which mcconnell, as we all remember, and that floor speech said trump was practically and morally responsible for what happened then of course four years later. and a remarkable turnaround, mcconnell announced in march that he will be voting for donald trump come november by source on all this tonight is former republican congressman adam kinzinger, who served on the january 6 congressional committee and gardens and just first off, what do you make of trump s upcoming meeting with senate republicans, but also the fact we don t know if they ll actually interact. it s not that big of a crown bit, but the donald trump in mitch mcconnell will be around each other for the first time in four years. well obviously the meeting itself isn t surprising. mitch mcconnell meeting with trump really isn t surprising. he s a political animal at his core. i mean, he s a he does some honorable things like the support for ukraine and stuff like that, but he s made it clear from the very beginning that he will support the republican nominee money i wish he wouldn t because, i mean, obviously, he could stay away. he could not say anything at all. and it s pretty obvious he s not going to be there in a number of years. so why not go out with the legacy? so it s too bad, but like i said, i m not surprised at all well, i mean, it s essentially the opposite of what we are hearing from paul ryan. he said is now voting for trump. he s going to write someone and he did that in 2020. so it s not a surprise. but this is what he said to neil cavuto about why he can t bring himself to vote for donald trump i think it really is just character at the another day and the fact that if you re willing to put yourself about the constitution and oath new or swear when you take office in federal office where there s president, remember? for congress, you swear an oath to the constitution. and if we re willing to suborn, it to yourself, i think that makes you unfit for office why do you think that other republicans more republicans who feel the same way, paul ryan does, don t say it i don t know when i wish they did. i mean, i look, there s reality that members of congress and former members of congress, particularly, or ones that are leaving don t want to make the party mad because they can go make a bunch of money lobbying after that. and so a lot of them stay quiet, which is why people asked me how can somebody that s leaving stays quiet? you don t want to tick off the party. i m very proud of paul ryan for saying that because he could have stayed silent. he could have not said anything, but he made a very clear, concise case for why he he s unqualified and on the point about the constitution law, caitlin when i swore in to congress, i did not take enough to my district. i didn t take an oath to the 700,000 people i represented. i took an oath to the constitution of the united states. that is the most important thing more than any issue. we re than any tax rate. the most important thing is, are we going to uphold these basic principles because democracy can t survive if you don t. so i think paul the speaker, made a very compelling case. he did it in front of an audience that didn t want to hear that. and i hope he says it more. it didn t talk about people though who are political animals that are interested in keeping their jobs on capitol hill. i mean, i think they look at this in a cynical way and say, okay, well, if i say what paul brian s out there saying, look at paul ryan, he s no longer in washington. he is no longer the house speaker. he left he s out why would i take that route if that s going to portend my fate? yeah. and let s look, it s true. you will be kicked out. the question is of conscience what is most important to you, a title, an identity. i mean, those are powerful things where you re conscience or your country, or the legacy that you leave. and so these people look at him, they ll look at, you know, liz cheney and i this is what a colt does by the way, it takes a few people that are out of line that don t swear fealty to the leader. they kick him out they politically execute them, and it sends a message to everybody else, don t get out of line. and that s why over the last eight years, we ve seen increasing, not just loyalty to trump but increasingly members of congress, for instance unwilling to go outside, criticized him for anything unwilling to go outside of what other whatever his daily orthodoxy is, which has nothing to do with conservatism and look, it s really just a question of conscience i m glad you said that about conservatism because this is what paul ryan s essential take was on what trump has done to the republican party. obviously, your lifelong republican, this is what he said also today i m a conservative republican. he is a populist. he s not a conservative. i want to see someone who s, who has fidelity to principles. i would prefer a party that is based on principles not personality or populism this populism is untethered to principles, but is that the future of the republican party mean that is the direction it seems to be moving in more and more look it depends how far in the future i think in a year, yet still that party i think if you fast forward ten years, i believe there s not going to be a person on this planet alive that will ever admit they support it and donald trump, because i think look, if he loses, obviously he s a loser once again. and that has a way of basically waking people up in a movement or in a political party, even if he wins, he s president for four years. very few presidents come out of that more popular than they went in america will be exhausted of him. and i i think the republican party will start to eat them up by the end of that. that s my optimistic view. but then somebody else could come along and run that same formula. and so who knows, but this is why people like paul ryan speaking out talking about being a conservative. but now being called a rhino, not because of what he believes but because he s not hear but from what we did here i wonder what stood out the most to you and all of this audio that is mostly about martha-ann alito, but also we re from justice alito himself as well yeah. katelyn, i am focused as well on the recording involving the justice himself. justice alito and the parts that i found most disturbing, probably the part that i find most concerning is when the reporter says that we need to return this country to godliness. and he says, yes, i agree with you. i find this to be a very shocking statement coming from a supreme court justice in a democracy like hours, which is not a democracy ruled by a particular religion you know, when john kennedy was asked whether as president his allegiance would be to the catholic church or to the constitution. he said, i swear an oath to the constitution. and that is what will guide my, thinking and my work. as president of the united states. i would ve expected justice alito or any justice on the supreme court to say the same and then similarly, i was very alarmed by his endorsement of the idea that it is impossible to compromise around a set of issues that people feel passionately about. the very nature of the judicial function on an appellate court like the supreme court, is to engage in compromise, to engage in conversation, to find a way towards an answer. justice alito is fond of citing brown versus board of education, which is indeed a magician important decision that changed american democracy. but it was born of compromise to get to a unanimous decision striking down separate but equal required months of work and wrangling. but but ultimately, the court created a unanimous decision because they understood the importance of coming before the country as one speaking to such a volatile issue and what justice alito essentially said was that he concedes he gives into the idea that there are simply things he cannot compromise on and that the two, what he calls the two sides cannot compromise on. and his framing of these decisions as well. winners and losers also suggests something that is, that i think is contrary to how we think about the judicial function. what does it say to you that we haven t heard from justice alito since these recordings were published? well, i d say a few things. kaitlan that i think we should be keeping our eye on. first of all, as, you know, senator durban is going to try to move forward. the senate ethics bill that he and senator whitehouse have put together that s obviously going to be a difficult thing to do, but he s determined to do to it. and when he was asked why he s doing this, pushes it because of the recordings. he said it is not because of the recordings and he said it was because of a financial disclosures and ethic statements. and i would remind everyone that justice thomas issued new disclosures, just a few weeks ago revealing trips from 2019. so quite late. and justice alito sought a 90 day extension, which he was granted so there may be other shoe to drop so we don t know. and i think that justice alito is not going to respond to every drip and drop of the revelations that are coming out. i think he responded last week around recusal from the case because that is imminent. yeah. but i don t think he intends to respond to each of these allegations. we saw him respond to that because they were asking him to recuse himself. he said he didn t fill he didn t think that it met the standard here. but cash you something else though because i m curious as we talk about this is i wonder what you would say to people who listen to this recording in their responses. well, i m uncomfortable or i m skeptical of this because it was someone posing as a conservative supporter or a sympathizer of what the alitos deal with. i wonder what you would say two people who raise questions about that when they listen to these audio recordings yeah. i mean if the questions are about the ethics of recording someone pretending that you are sympathetic to their cause. that is one set of questions that i think are actually not the focus of our concern. i think that the focus is that justice alito was speaking in an environment where he felt very comfortable. he was speaking unreservedly. he had a sounded as though he were speaking quite sincerely as did mrs. alito. and what was also interesting was that it confirmed much of the account that was given to us by the neighbor of the very disturbing account about what was happening winning between them in that community. and even that violates at least as i read it, the court s own code of conduct that they released in november last year in response to pressure that they were getting after the revelations of financial disclosures, many of us have criticized that code but that code does say that adjusted should require similar conduct by those subject to the justices control in terms of harassing behavior and conduct, simply saying it was my wife who hung the flag or it was my wife who was engaged in the altercation by their own standards is not enough so we learned a lot from that recording that i think is important, and we ll be watching closely for the and somehow get revenge against these candidates. these voters care about donald trump. he runs a reply publican party, not kevin mccarthy. yeah, there was some funding that kevin mccarthy helped with with mazes challenger, but but that was pretty much it. but we re also projecting that the republican michael ruling is going to win that that special election in ohio s six congressional district. this obviously matters because right now republicans having teeny tiny majority in the house and heal help with that margin just to teeny tiny bit. yeah. yeah. he ll help in that. but really what s interesting to me there is the margin which is he s not winning by a whole heck of a lot of the margin i last checked around was about ten percentage points. and why that s important, it s trump won that district by nearly 30 points. this is just another example of democrats turning out and high numbers in these special elections democrats are highly engaged and that s the thing they re hoping for come november, right? that this highly engaged electorate that they re seeing in these special elections will translate come november and their voters were turnout and trump s voters perhaps won t. okay, so that s interesting. so he wanted the district by how much in 2020 trump won it by a little less than 30 percentage twice and now you re seeing how close that is in that race is exactly right, and that s something we ve seen throughout the special elections since roe v. wade was overturned as democrats been outperforming their 2020 basin and democrats are hoping that translates to 2024. but of course there ll be a much wider turnout in 2024. the question is, how much larger? well, that turned out, actually, yeah, and highly engaged voters important can i ask you? we re going to talk about a few of the other races were still waiting on some polls so close in nevada, cui talk about what is happening with george santos, your war, the associated press is reporting tonight that have now just been arrested here in the united states. we are told they re rounded up in los angeles, new york, and philadelphia on immigration charges and law enforcement sources tell cnn that they came in through the southern border, the us southern border, and they were screened by us officials, but apparently no red flags at the time investigators later discovered possible links to isis how concerning is it that homeland security officials and how worried are they after seeing this about potential terrorists, people with ties to isis exploiting the us southern border to enter the that is tonight s last word. the 11th hour with stephanie ruhle starts now. tonight, hunter biden guilty in his federal gun case. what s next for the president s only living son as he awaits sentence thing and what it could mean for the race. then my exclusive interview with john bolton. why he thinks we are not taking the former president s threats seriously enough. plus, pride month under attack. why progress is being lost as the 11th hour gets underway on this tuesday night. good evening once again, i am stephanie ruhle and we are now 147 days away from the election and today the president son, hunter biden, was convicted on all counts in his federal gun trial. the jury deliberated the three counts for just three hours. president biden says he accepts the outcome of the case and will always be there for his son. here is my colleague ryan nobles with more. reporter: tonight president biden arriving in delaware, hugging his son on the tarmac after hunter biden became the first child of a sitting president found guilty in a criminal trial. no one in this country is above the law. reporter: it took three hours of deliberations for 12 jurors to unanimously determine hunter biden guilty of three felony counts. for lying about his drug use on a federal background check to buy a gun. special counsel david weiss, who oversaw the prosecution, saying this is not a case about hunter s struggles with crack, but his decision to break the law. s choice to lie on a government form when he bought a gun and then to possess that gun. it was these choices and the combination of guns and drugs that made his conduct dangerous. reporter: inside the courtroom, the president s 54- year-old son did not react as the verdict was read. he left the courthouse holding the hand of the first lady, later releasing a statement saying i am more grateful today for the love and support i experienced this last week from melissa, my family, my friends, and my community then i am disappointed about the outcome. the verdict comes after four days of testimony from people who are or were once close to hunter biden. many testifying about his drug use around the time he filled out the background check saying he was not a drug user. his ex-girlfriend testified she witnessed hunter smoking crack every 20 minutes or so. the prosecution also using clips from hunter s own book. i have no plans beyond the moment. reporter: the defense argued hunter biden did not knowingly lie on the form. tonight we spoke to juror number 10, who asked that we conceal his identity. separating the politics from the case a absolutely. for us it was not politically motivated. politics never played into anything that we said in the jury room. reporter: president biden, who said he would not pardon his son, writing, jill and i love our son and we are so proud of the man he is today. jill and i will always be there for hunter and the rest of our family with our love and support. nothing will ever change that. with that let s get smarter with the help of our leadoff panel this evening. mike memoli is here. he has covered president biden and his family for more than a decade. susan glasser joins us, staff writer for the new yorker and harry litman, former assistant attorney general. mike, you know this president and his family better than any other reporter out there. how are they all reacting to this? biden has a lot of family expressions and one i have heard him invoke so often is that family is everything. it is the beginning, it is the middle, and it is the end. in the more than decade of covered president biden i have seen them come together to celebrate their greatest triumphs. the election, the inauguration most recently. i have also seen them have to endure some of the most difficult and tragic moments as a family. this is one that yet again has brought the family together. to really take stock of a very difficult moment. really the past week and a half has been so difficult to have to relive through this trial the most difficult moments of their family, starting with the death of beau biden and what it did to hunter biden, leading to the addiction to drugs. as i have been talking to people close to the family tonight i have been struck by a tone of defiance about what comes next. there has been concern about what this might mean politically, but also personally for president biden. he is 21 weeks away from his last election. 16 days away from a consequential debate against donald trump, but the tone i am hearing from people close to the president is that they are so proud of their public service as a family and nothing is going to stop them from achieving the goal that is set out in front of them. they know they have a difficult task ahead. the politics, the legal situation does not get easier from here but they are determined to face this together as a family. harry, you wrote in the l.a. times that the jury decision was right, but the prosecution was wrong. i don t think i know what that means. let me try. department of justice guidelines, stephanie, have ways of handling cases and cases like this in which someone lies on a form but does not do any other crime with a gun or part of a gang or whatever are universally dismissed or not treated with the severity that david weiss treated this one. that is how david weiss first proposed to treat this one about a year ago when the gun charges were going to be the subject of a diversion agreement if hunter biden kept clean for two years. it would go away. so the screaming question, not the jury verdict but the question to charge presents and i don t know what the answer is. what happened to change his view of what was the proper punishment and treatment of hunter biden to take it outside how gop practice would normally treat it. because he is a special counsel no one in the doj supervisory structure which normally would say we don t do that to these cases, here is how we handle these cases. no one was there to say that and i think it is certain for whatever reason that hunter was treated more severely than another defendant with the same facts. you have written that you don t think a game changer could change voters minds about this election so i assume you think this verdict won t have much of an impact. we are getting to the point that you are anticipating me too well. look, if donald trump s conviction and becoming the first convicted felon in american history who was a former president, if that was not a radical change in the election, i don t see the conviction of a private citizen, even one who was the son of a current president to be a game changer in this race. it was that close. there was a minor, incremental shift at best toward biden. it is not entirely clear how this conviction of biden s son will play politically. certainly republicans were immediately questioning this, saying this is really just a distraction and all sorts of instantaneous conspiracy theories. default setting from some of trumps public supporters and defenders. you know, hunter biden is not running for president and that s the bottom line. there is no evidence that years of investigations of him, of dragging his name around, has really affected biden s political standing and i don t anticipate this would, either. hunter biden is not running for president. we should remind our audience he has no role in our government, past, present, and no plans for the future. harry, what could he be looking at as far as sentence goes? the standard guidelines would dictate a sentence between 15 to 21 months, based on the conduct and lack of criminal history. those are just recommendations and my best guess, consistent with what i was saying about how people who don t do anything else other than lie on the form are treated is that he will receive a fair bit less than that from the judge. remember however that there are still the tax charges he has to face and david weiss made it clear that the investigation is ongoing and he may be targeting some of hunter biden s conduct in 2014 or so in china, in business dealings. for this charge i expect him to get a sentence that is a matter of months, not the 15 to 21 that the guidelines would otherwise dictate. even if it is just a few months, hunter biden, unlike most people in his situation has secret service protection. so how does that work? your guess is as good as mine, though we have been thinking about it and we know the secret service prepared a plan when it came up with donald trump. trump would have his own wing and people would be there. there would be a lot of cooperation with local authorities. here it is easier because it is federal authorities, bureau of prisons and secret service. that will be worked out one way or another. i think that is sort of the least of the practical issues that this conviction poses today. michael, you laid it out for us, how close the biden family has. how to finance the president is when it comes to protecting his family, how he talks about the family. around this time last year i interviewed the president. much to his teams chagrin, anger, fury, i asked about hunter and he said my son is an innocent man, my son is a good man. the president is now headed deeper into this campaign into the debate stage. how is he going to handle the questions he is asked, the narrative around hunter now that we have this guilty verdict and a president who does respect the rule of law and decisions made by a jury? just think about the gauntlet that is ahead. i mentioned 16 days from now is the first debate. preparation is critical. the president tomorrow is leaving for an important foreign trip. meeting with other key leaders as well as pope francis. you know how close this president is with that hope. it will be an interesting meeting, but then he comes back and has a little over a week to prepare for that debate. we have never in modern history scenery match between combatants like trump and biden and we know the strategy on the part of the former president is very likely to try to get under president biden skin and use this against him. the biden team looks at 2020 when, yes, hunter biden was a frequent political cudgel that trump tried to use against him and the president s advisers say it did not work then and it actually backfired on donald trump. they are presenting this as do this at your own peril to donald trump, but i think it is a concern to people close to president biden that as important as the debate is and as important as preparation is, will he be able to focus on the task at hand? the answer from those i ve spoken to today is that is not going to be an issue. susan, i m sure you remember this question. former president trump and his friends at fox news said it over and over and over. where is hunter? they said it for days, weeks, months. it seemed like years. yet after today s verdict the trump campaign was basically silent, saying it is just a distraction. what in the world is going on here, susan? well, first of all i guess now that donald trump himself where s the label of convicted felon and has been at the spearhead of the most kind of concerted assault that we have ever seen, i think, by one political party in this country against the very legitimacy of the legal system. it is not exactly a comparison that is favorable where you have democrats on down today saying listen, we respect the rule of law. biden isn t going to issue a pardon for his own son. as painful as this is we think that the jury system works and things like that. the contrast with trump is obviously one that is very unfavorable and i am struck by how quickly trumps allies immediately reverted to conspiracy theories and make- believe. i can t stress that enough. they are still in burnet down mode when it comes to our legal system and that includes, you know, trying to imply that this case is a distraction from the real secret being covered up, the real case that should be brought against hunter biden. whatever the conspiracy theory is, it is part of a purposeful plan to rip down the authority and the legitimacy of the legal system, because of donald trump. because of one man. republicans like to say the current president weaponize is the justice department, but i want to share with democrat jim mcgovern had to say about that very thing. watch this. apparently when a republican is convicted it is weaponization, but when a democrat is convicted, the president s son no less, that is justice. give me a break. hunter biden was found guilty by a jury of his peers, just like donald trump. the divide is stunning and it is a great reminder that one political party remains committed to the rule of law and the other doesn t. jim mcgovern bringing a rational thought to a political party. crazy to do these days. michael, there are a lot of apolitical people. it seems like what you laid out with the a clear contrast for voters. is it? it is interesting because what we didn t hear from the president, from those around him tonight, was criticism of a trump appointed judge that presided over this trial or the prosecution from the trump appointed special counsel. there was none of that in the statement before the trial began and today when the try was over, he reiterated his respect for the rule of law and freedom and democracy have been an important part of the president s campaign. that is an example he is showing not just through those words, but the words we saw in another interview last week. the president has the power after this difficult moment, this difficult verdict, to free his son of any potential jail time. he can issue a pardon as soon as the sentence comes down and he has said he will not do that. if ever there was an opportunity for a president to put their finger on the scale of the justice system and given how close he and his family are, it would seem to be in this moment and he said he is not going to do that. thank you all for starting us off on this very serious news evening. when we return this man once worked in the trump administration and a cabinet level position. now one of his biggest critics. john bolton talks the verdicts in both trump and hunter biden s trials. later the biden campaign has an aggressive strategy to brand trump as a felon. how the president s sons verdict could complicate that. the 11th hour, just getting underway on a tuesday night. da. revenge does take time, i will say that. sometimes revenge can be justified. sometimes it can. look, when this election is over, based on what they ve done, i would have every right to go after them and it is easy, because it is joe biden. you see all of the criminality. i know a lot of republicans want retribution. we are going to see what happens. the former president has been vague on details, but there is no doubt that revenge has been top of mind for donald trump. nbc news noting, quote, trump has done at least five interviews since his guilty verdict. in all five he has talked about possible retribution. his former national security advisor john bolton has been warning about this for years. in february, 2023 he wrote trump really cares only about retribution for himself and it will consume much of his second term. john bolton joins us now. ambassador, thank you for being here. i wanted to talk to you because donald trump is clearly not shy about saying he would get revenge on his perceived enemies in a second term. are we taking his threats seriously enough? i don t think enough people are. when you hear trump saying things like people are saying that retribution can be justified, what he really means is i am saying that retribution can be justified. i think he has a long list of adversaries he wants to go after, but i think the justice department under the trump administration will be in continuing chaos as he tells his political appointee is to go after people whether there are grounds to do it or not and what those lawyers do will tell you a lot about their legal integrity. i think it will put the judiciary under real pressure. you might be on the perceived enemy list. are you concerned at all for your safety? i m concerned about a lot of people that i think he made clear he wants to go after. he tried to suppress my book. he tried to get a criminal investigation started. both of those have been settled and taken out of the picture because they were utterly without merit, but i don t think those technicalities stand in trumps way. he said for example he wants to prosecute the former chairman of the joint chief of staff s for daring to have a conversation with his chinese counterpart in the run-up to january 6, to assure the chinese that they need not worry. trump says that his treason and he reminded people that the death penalty used to apply. i think he is very serious. he may joke about it a little bit, but this will be a retribution presidency and i think the justice department will be where the rubber meets the road. you called the new york verdict a fire bell in the night and you urged your party to nominate somebody else at the convention. do you think that is something that could realistically happen? is there a group behind the scenes potentially working on this? i don t think it is realistic, but i think people ought to have a gut check one more time. for most americans voting for a convicted felon, i think, is going to be a real obstacle. you can say all you want that this was the result of political discrimination against trump. he will be able to raise the selective prosecution argument on appeal. when the case was put in front of 12 regular americans, new yorkers like donald trump used to be, they found him guilty. i think the facts the prosecution presented were clear and that is a problem the party will have and could affect senate candidates, house candidates, gubernatorial candidates. i think if he is elected, electing the first convicted felon as president of the united states will cause real damage to the united states and how we are perceived abroad. given the guilty verdict today for president biden son, hunter biden, what do you say to those republicans who say joe biden weaponized the department of justice and made it his political tool? right and basically shot his son in the process. it is a conspiracy theory. i speak as an alumnus of the department of justice. you could not do in that department what trumps supporters say has been done and not have it leaked to every major media outlet in the country. it is possible to be the victim of selective prosecution and unfairly so and also be guilty. i think certainly that is probably true in trump s case. in hunter biden s case they are not done with him yet. there will be an income tax case and the u.s. attorney, special counsel investigation into hunter continues. so i would like to see what the impact of this case is on the election. it will have an election impact, even though it is not joe biden. it is his son. and see what people think when trump says poor donald trump, the whole world is against him. apparently against hunter biden, too. do you think donald trump is a threat to democracy? we keep hearing that phrase. i want to know if you believe it and if so, practically, tangibly what does it look like? i don t think it is a threat to democracy or our system. i think it will cause enormous damage and a term of confusion and turmoil. but the idea that donald trump is going to overthrow the united states constitution, overthrow the republic as an existential threat to democracy gives him too much credit. i think it is important to state the threat accurately. not to overstate it, not to understate it, but to understand what the nature of the threat is so people who oppose it can combat it more effectively. overdoing it i think gives trump a break and that s a mistake. you said that donald trump doesn t have the brains for dictatorship. even though he said that he would be a dictator on day one. does that make him any less dangerous if he is not that smart but still wants to be a dictator? i think it goes to the point that while donald trump has an infinite span of attention when it comes to the greater glory of donald trump, his attention span on most other issues is about he will to a fruit fly. so that his opponents and even some of his supporters who try and move him away from the most dangerous things that he does will have plenty of room to try to step in. i m not trying to minimize what i see donald trump doing. i think what he was doing at the end of his first term is where it will pick up the day he is inaugurated and it is serious. when you say the republic itself will fall like the roman republic well, really? people think donald trump is equal to julius caesar? give me a break. he may not be, but this time around he won t have the safety guards of you, h.r. mcmaster, the list goes on. are you concerned about the people that are in his current orbit and what they are capable of doing and how they can influence him? yes, i think any administration in a second term does not attract the quality of people it does in the first for the very practical reason that the runway in the second term is shorter. trump will be a lame duck the minute he is sworn in and he has a lot of people around him. basically the people who stayed in the government after january 6 who were second and third rate at best. i think the bigger danger is that trump will insist on staffing a second term on personal loyalty to him above all. he is coming up with his decision for his vice presidential nominee and i think the two questions are, number one, do you think the 2020 election was stolen? and number two, if i told you in a similar situation to do what i told mike pence to do, would you do it? unless the answer to both questions is yes, then that person will not be considered for vice president. i think you will see something similar in all of the key positions. that is a very dangerous circumstance and to the extent the senate republicans included take the confirmation process seriously. if they see people who are more loyal to donald trump than they are to the constitution, that alone is grounds against them. is there a certain person that you see as highly dangerous who you are worried about? i would not want to give any of them academy awards. i think there are bright people including people in the house and senate who have joined this cult of personality and the smarter they are, the more dangerous they are. you are giving us some very serious warnings and things to take seriously, but something i m going to say is not that serious. a write in vote. this election is going to be joe biden or donald trump. in 2020 you wrote in dick cheney. you said you would do it again. are you really giving a clear and honest warning if you are willing to do another right in that won t help anything? look, i bought that argument in 2016 when hillary clinton ran against trump and i voted for trump in 2016. hillary and bill were a year ahead of me in law school and i like to say i ve been burdened with them a lot longer than the rest of the country. after working for trump i could not vote for him, but i did not vote for joe biden in 2020 and won t this year because i don t think he is fit to be president either, for different reasons. when you have two people who don t cross the bar of acceptability, i think it is legitimate to cast a protest vote. a lot of republicans told me a year ago that they would not vote for trump. that they will look at biden and choose what they considered to be the lesser of two evils and i hear other republicans and some democrats say the opposite. it is an unhappy time for america when these are the two people we nominated and it will be a bad four years for america, whichever of them wins. then are these concerns that you have that serious? they can t, stephanie and i think we are already seeing previews of how they will contort themselves and make the reach that, oh no, this hunter biden verdict is unique in and of itself. completely different from what is happening to trump and that is not the reality. i think republicans will still try to say that even though it has been demonstrated that they have nothing to gain here. they tried and failed repeatedly to use hunter biden as a political football and the responses today show that they fully understand that it is nothing for them to win here. i think we were describing trump statement as a distraction. so i don t expect them to stop at that, right? they will keep with the trump lies, but when we look at this broadly we have to keep in mind that that is not going to have an impact in the selection. throughout the afternoon we ve heard it repeated that hunter biden is not running for election, donald trump is. we ve also heard the contrast from president biden who fully says he accepts the jury decision. he respects the justice system, compared to trump saying it is rigged and i think that is a contrast that will be replayed again and again and that will be something that captures voters attention more than the verdict specifically on hunter biden. hunter biden is a one off. menendez s legal bills would disagree. the president has started to use the term, convicted felon, calling trump that over and over. now that his son is in that camp, does it make it harder for him to do that? no, because he is not talking about his son. he s talking about the guy running against him to be the next president of the united states. hunter is not running for anything. hunter is taking care of business and will have another casey will have to deal with, just as donald trump is taking care of his business and will have three or four other cases to deal with. from the president s perspective it is smart politics to call the thing what it is. why would you run away from that? honestly he is a convicted felon. we watched our friends on this network countdown each count, one through 34. i think for the biden team it is an opportunity for them to lean into the politics and this is a political campaign. what candidate in the country, in the world for that matter, would not use this kind of weakness that is self-imposed by his opponent? remember this is all because of what donald trump did. joe biden was not in that hotel room with stormy daniels. donald trump was. the reality of it is, that is the reality. that s the truth. those are the facts and why not talk about it when the moment presents itself? judging when and exactly how each time may be a matter of some decision, but lean into it and call the thing what it is. i want to talk about somebody else that talks about politics today in the presidential race. a republican we don t hear from often, paul ryan, he was on fox news and here is what he said. he said he is a populist and authoritarian narcissist. it is a job that rick myers the kind of character he just does not have. that s pretty strong. that s the way i feel. i agree with that. i don t support biden, either. i think his policies are terrible. a lot of republicans make this argument. we heard john bolton saying basically the same thing on the show. michael, what is your response to that? my response is okay. to a certain extent, to each his own, but at a certain point it has to become about the country. going back to your discussion with john bolton, the reality is this is a big deal. you have an individual who is running for president who says he wants to be a dictator. i don t know. that is not what we do or have done. that is not what we are inclined towards. yet we may have had folks in america who danced with this idea back in the 30s. and in the 1950s with john birch society, but leaders in this country and ultimately the american people said that is not who we are. i am not forsaking the future of my kids and my grandkids to some fool who wants to be a dictator, because i know what history has taught me about dictatorships and that is not who we are. so at a certain point the paul ryan s and john bolton s may sit and go, i can t do that. but what i am asking my fellow republicans to do and center- right voters to do is think about the country for once. think about the bigger issue. think about your kids and the importance of this. there are a lot of things about the biden administration policies i could disagree with all day long, but they are not a threat to my freedom. they are not a threat to my family and my future. i get up every morning and have that fight with the administration. i can t have that fight with thugs from a former dictator knocking on my door. i m at a disadvantage there as an american citizen. so there are some important points to be made about this election. i happen to think that is one of them. i hope paul ryan and others will come around and at the end of the day what they do in the privacy of the voting booth is their business, despite what they may say publicly. i m guessing right now mitch mcconnell is tucked into his bed, nodding and agreeing with everything michael is saying. in public he is going to be welcoming donald trump later this week along with fellow senate republicans. how do you think this will go? in better than better-than-expe cted, the market good love if futures way up right now, we have the latest moments ago, us secretary of state antony blinken suggested that hamas is moving the goal posts on ceasefire and hostage hostage negotiations. so where do things stand now and just in italian media reporting, the pope tuesday, homophobic slur behind closed doors again, this is a second and consecutive months sara sidner is out. i m john berman with kate baldwin in this is cnn news central all right the breaking. news that type of in-flight inflation data that a lot of people were hoping for. let s get right to cnn s rahel solomon with the very latest on this. what are the numbers show real? yeah, john, it may be somewhere outside, but it is cooling off in the inflation report, at least this inflation report. so this is cpi, the consumer price index. and what it shows is a better-than-expec ted measure on really every level, john. so let s talk about headline annual inflation that came in at 3.3%. this index increasing at 3.3% that is better than we saw the month prior. that is better than economists were expecting when you look at it on a monthly basis. and we haven t seen a figure like this since july of 2022. i want to say, and so inflation did not increase on a monthly basis. you like to see that now cpi is a basket of goods and services and the government sort of measure jurors that the price difference over time. so that s what we re talking about here. but john, even if you were to remove volatile categories, categories like food categories like energy, you get what s called core inflation. and this is a better underlying indicator of inflation and what the federal reserve has control over that also came at better-than-expected, both on ahead blind annual basis and on a monthly basis, really quickly to talk about some of the sectors which we re showing you here. gas prices, energy prices, those fell, food prices did tick up slightly ever so slightly and shelter, which has been especially stubborn has also increased in the month widget continues to do. now, let me tell you why futures are popping on this news are so happy about the zoo s investors welcoming this news with open arms because john, as you might remember earlier this year, we had a string not sure if the dow is correct because a moment ago when i saw the dow, it was rate cuts anytime soon. and so you get a report like this. i ll pull it up here. you get a report like this from the bls, which suggests that, okay, inflation is starting to cool again, it is starting to accommodate, be accommodating. well, that and puts rate cuts back on the table. there are four right. meetings. the rest of this year after this meeting, we will obviously here from jay powell and about six hours. but after this meeting, there are four meetings and so do we see more than one rate cut again? and so it just makes that conversation more active again because after these really hot inflation reports, it started to feel like, well, maybe we won t get any rate cuts or maybe we will only get one. and so we re back in the game, john, for all of those who were hoping for a rape gut, they are back in the game after a report like this, back in the game inflation slows down more than expected. what people want to see were hell solomon, thanks so much for explaining it so well, thank you. so president biden is headed to italy today. he s about to take off. you can see air force one right there. he s headed to italy for the g7 summit. there biden will be sitting down with world leaders with huge issues on the agenda, including the israel-hamas war. and moments ago, secretary of state tony blinken made his first substantive remarks after hamas offered its response to the us backed hostage and ceasefire deal approved by the un security council. this week. listen to tony blinken hamas has proposed numerous changes to the proposal that was on the table. we discussed those changes last night with depression colleagues and today with the prime minister some of the changes are workable some are not blinken, not immediately providing detail on what changes hamas once what the numerous changes are that they re proposing, seen as robertson is in italy ahead of the g7 summit. and nick tony blinken when out of his way to say g7 liters are among those who have all voiced their support for this hostage and ceasefire deal yeah, they have. so when they meet here where president biden everyone gets into town late tonight and i began meeting tomorrow perhaps this is not going to be a central ticket item on the planned agenda. but because of the bumps and the road getting to where we re at on these talks that egypt and qatar interlocutors on. undoubtedly, there s gonna be some discussion about how the g7 nations can help me please the ball forward because the narrative has been put pressure on hamas, put pressure on hamas it doesn t matter which diplomats in which country you re talking to either in the region or in europe that s the narrative at the moment. so you will have here the leaders of the ua and turkey who are not members of the g7, but will be undoubtedly consulted in conversations about how they can use their influence over hamas luck. we know that they re hamas leaders, the political leaders who live outside of gaza so they ve been to turkey, they ve met with president erdogan, the uae. has, has an influence in the region as well. saudi arabia, crown prince it s mohammed bin salman s still not clear as of yesterday because of the health of the king back in saudi arabia, whether or not he ll be here, but he s also invited and a key stakeholder and the humanitarian support and the rebuilding of gaza when there s a piece they ll, so these countries do have implements and do have a voice. so perhaps there ll be brought into the conversation, but it s not clear how they are actually going to leverage hamas who have already been under a lot of pressure already, who are clearly holding out for they think they re in a better position. we heard that indicated from the hamas leader yahya sinwar he thinks that they have israel, right where they want them according to documents seen by the wall street journal. so it s not clear what pressure can be applied, but conversations here that will be the question asked, how do we do and how do we move the ball forward? yeah, quite a moment in this one of many important issues that the world leaders are going to be hitting on great to have you, nick, thank you so much, john. with us now, max boot, a senior fellow at the council on foreign relations, washington post columnist and the author of reagan, his life and legend, max, it is great to see you. i just want to read you again with the secretary just said because his words were carefully chosen and i think reflect the moment we re in the ceasefire and hostage discussions. the secretary said you get to a point where if one side continues to change its demands, including making demands on insisting on changes for things that had already accepted you have to question whether the proceeding and good faith or not. he says hamas is changing as demands. he says, the gaps he thinks are bridged able. but what do you make this? well, i m doubtful that the gaps are actually bridge evolving. we ve seen this going on for many months where the us has been searching for a ceasefire. it seems like there s progress being made, but at the end of the day, it falls through on in this case, it s falling through because of hamas and obviously israel it gets a lot of international criticism and understandably so because of all the civilian casualties being inflicted in gaza, but let s listen to what secretary blinken, president biden, and other g7 liters are saying, which is that right now, the fault lies with hamas. they could stop the war tomorrow if they would just agree to these ceasefire terms. they refuse to do so because as nic robertson was pointing out there s every indication that the hamas leadership thinks that s in their interest to see more dead palestinians, because that puts more pressure on israel. this proposal has the weight of un approval. you also think egypt, qatar, other nations, or more invested. seems like they re more invested in at this time maybe then they had been before. does that have any soy with hamas? sure doesn t look like it. i mean uis sinwar, who is hiding probably in some tunnel and in gaza has just rejected these terms. and the biden administration had some hopes that they could use egypt and qatar and other arab states to pressure him clearly, it has not worked. sinwar is playing his own game and he doesn t seem to care how many palestinians pay the price for continuing this war? so president biden on his way to europe right now for these g7 meetings hell of a lot is going on in europe over the last few days. these european parliament elections where the far-right parties have done very well extremely well in countries like france where emmanuel macron has called the snap elections. how do you think that will impact? the discussions over the next few days? well, clearly this is going to be something that all of the g7 liters can commiserate over aside, of course, from prime minister meloni, the host of italy, who is herself from the far-right. so she doesn t see this as a threat. i would just put what happened in europe and a little context, john, which has yes, the big story certainly from france in particular, is the very strong showing of the national rally, the far-right party. but keeping having it all in perspective, they re also a lot of countries where the far-right did not do so on that end of the day, the far-right is stilled, only going to be something like the fifth largest party in the european parliament. it s still the center right? in the center left, which are the largest party. so let s not exaggerate and let s keep in mind that and in a few weeks time in the uk the labour party is almost certain to win a massive landslide election victory. so i would not say that the far-right is taking over all of europe, but clearly they are resurgent in france and germany in particular. and that is something that is of mutual concern not only to president biden, but his fellow g7 liters, in part because so many of these far-right parties are sympathetic to russia. some of them have been financed by russia. and so they are not going to continue to support ukraine if they reach power you have this book on ronald reagan, which is so interesting in such an interesting moment because president biden for the anniversary of d-day, the 80th anniversary, just spoke in places and spoke in ways very reminiscent of where and how ronald reagan spoke 40 years ago in a way. and i don t think it was a mistake. i think this is very much on purpose suggesting that his foreign policy binds is much more similar to ronald reagan s than donald trump s is to ronald reagan s. yeah. so and i don t think that was a coincidence. that was the message you wanted to convey without coming out what i m saying so and it s one of these great ironies of history. in 1984 when, when ronald reagan was in europe for the 40th anniversary of d-day and gave of course, is very famous speech about the boys upon to hawk. he was really talking about the need for transatlantic unity for strengthening nato in the face of the soviet threat. and now president biden is trying to deliver a very similar message about strengthening nato in the face of the russian threat knowing of course that ronald reagan s own party has largely abandoned the very positions that he espoused in the 19. and i think he s trying to drive home. the fact that in fact, as you say, his foreign policy has a lot more in common with ronald reagan s than it does with donald trump s next food. great to see you looking forward to reading biskupic, the author of nine black robes out now in paperback so what are hunting a hunter? biden s lawyers looking at when it comes to the suffering in court sure. good to see you, john. it s just a coincidence that right now this case of hunter biden will be proceeding on appeals as the us supreme court is clarifying the rules for when a defendant can challenge a federal gun regulation right now, the justices are resolving just what those standards should be and the whole or deal with the court traces to a ruling two years ago that greatly expanded second amendment gun rights. the justices world in a way that said that a gun regulation could be upheld only if it s part of america s historical tradition of firearm regulation. that is very high standard to make meat. and it s also a confusing standard for lower court judges who have tried to look at what about gun possession for someone who was a drug addict or a drug user as in hunter biden s case, or in the case the justices are deciding right now, what about someone who is is subject to a domestic violence restraining order and under federal law would be prohibited from owning a firearm that individual man by the name of rahimi has challenged the case. the justices are now deciding and john, they could even give us an answer as soon as tomorrow. and the question is, how does that standard from two years ago tied to the historical tradition of firearm regulation, play out. now for what you would think would be more modern regulations, for example, for someone subject to a domestic violence restraining order. so we ll get more clarity from the justices. on that part of federal firearms law. but at the same time, there s also a case up there that really is similar to a hunter biden s where a defendant is challenging a part of the federal law that prohibits gun possession for someone who either was a drug user or addicted to drugs at the time. and a lower court has ruled that under the supreme court s test of two years ago, that federal law can cannot be enforced. the federal government is defending that law in the case of another defendant not at all related to the hunter biden case. but as you can see, john, however, the justices begin to clarify this will affect how hunter biden might be able to appeal his gun conviction, john? yeah. no question about that. the lawyers we pouring through the ruling word by word jump is keep a great to see this morning. thank you. kate. and joining us right now is democratic strategists keith boykins. he s a former clinton white house aide and cnn senior political commentator, david urban, republican strategist and former trump campaign adviser, david, there is the legal reaction and the legal future when it comes to hunter biden s case. and then there s the political reaction to this case. i want to play for you how the room so get republican house speaker reactant to this verdict but mr. speaker, you ve been saying two tier system of justice for some time. here s the president said, be convicted on three counts as that undercut your client it doesn t every case is different and clearly the evidence is overwhelming here. i don t think that s the case and the trump drop and then there s this from james comer. today s verdict is a step toward accountability, but until the department of justice investigates, everyone involved in the purported scheme, mr. comer said statement, it will be clear. department officials continue to cover for the president reiterating what remains baseless claim that president biden has been involved in bribery scheme. david is, yes, but a strong strategy on the tail of this now a look, i think that is case stands by itself if republicans just can t acknowledge that the justice was served here, this case was brought. it was a strong case, a hunter biden faces yet another case coming up september 5, he s being tried just as anyone else would be tried i think that it s just it s reality. there are two things can be true here, kate donald trump was found guilty by a jury in new york, which was overwhelmingly voted against donald trump in the general election, and 100 biden was found guilty in a state where his family is love and beloved. i mean, you saw the jurors the jury pool here. lots of folks ties to the biden family, and he was convicted. so i don t believe that the statement by the by the speakers hundred percent correct. that there are two systems of justice here. i think this case kind of illustrates that point. if the president had something to do with it, you think it let his son is lost, one son to tragic death and he s got a sudden now whose face some serious, serious substance abuse issues clearly what it put his thumb on the scale if he could ve right to preclude this from happening, and it didn t happen. so i think republicans need to figure out a different talking point. for this specific case. yeah. qizan apply for you then reaction from democratic congressman jamie raskin on how his take on how democrats are responding. listen to this and i m not heard a single democrat anywhere in the country cry fraud cry fixed, cry, rigged a cry. kangaroo court. you don t hear a single peep out of any democrats saying that why we believe in the rule of law when they go low, we go high is the oldest new strategy going to work for democrats when it comes to this contrast between donald trump and his response, and the democrat response to what happened with hunter biden is stark and dramatic. it s a reflection of what american politics excuse to be where we believed in the rule of law and we respect to the outcomes of jury trials. that s what a president and a presidential candidate. it was supposed to do the idea that donald trump was accusing biden of weaponizing the legal system against him in a case in new york that biden had nothing to do with this is outrageous and david urban made the point, i think precisely that why would he, of all people in the hunter biden case, if why would you because some republicans, by the way, when making the argument that somehow biden is using this case to prosecute hunter biden to somehow suggested that means that he s doing hello, guys donald trump junior being one of them. yeah. right. it somehow they misused. do we it because he wants to prove that the system is fair. it s double back yeah. and it s so complicated, it s even hard for me to explain and it just doesn t make any sense and it why would he prosecutors own sunday to prove the point? why would he make a sudden the fall guy to prove a point doesn t make any sense. the other point is just ridiculous is that they keep moving the goal post because at first they were saying that he would never be you ve never been prosecuted than he was prosecuted. then they said he would never be convicted in part because they said because they were black jurors and the black jurors would never convict a biden in delaware. and now they re making up other conspiracy theories. i think david urban is right that they need to move on and start talking about things that we can actually make sense for the american people. like, what are you going to do about, about jobs they re gonna be about wages and health care and where they re going to do about housing and things that people care about. not about donald trump trials. rate announcement. meaning this is a big day on the us economy front, joining me now is one of president biden s top economic aids. well brainard. she s the director of the national economic council. little thank you for being here with the full understanding you all take a lot of qarrah, to not weigh in on the fed and respect the feds independence would you expect the data out just this morning to have a demonstrable impact on what we learn this afternoon yeah. so i don t speak about the fed s policymaking the president respects the independence of the federal reserve. i will say that today s report on inflation, which showed zero inflation in the month an inflation down by two-thirds is welcome news, particularly for families that are feeling squeezed by the cost of living grocery prices down or flat for four months in a row and gas prices below $3.50 at the pump, those are prices that are very important to american families and you re talking about how families are feeling squeezed. and in general, when it comes to the us economy how people feel about the economy is a huge issue it, but how they feel about the overall economy, how they feel about their personal economy. the president s approval rating, and how people feel about the economy remains underwater. we ve showed, we re going to show everyone a graphic kind of tracking his approval on the economy over the course of the year really, from since march of last year. and now it s kind of remaining in the low 30s. if the data is showing improvement and that is what you see with this report today. why aren t people feeling it the. president knows that families have been true. a lot with the pandemic inflation went up with the pants no and he knows that the cost of living is just too high for a lot of families. and he is fighting really hard to lower those was costs and health care, of course, he secured important legislation bringing the cost of prescription drugs down like on insulin to $35 a month. those are real savings. grocery prices. he s been calling on grocery chains to bring prices down. they ve kept their profit margins pretty high in now you see grocery stores answering the call price reductions on thousands of items. grocery prices flat or down from the past few months same on gas prices where we are seeing record production and gas prices coming down, going into the summer driving season. but look, we know for that in coming months, that s the kind of choice that s going to be in front of us whether to keep fighting, to lower costs for middle-class americans, which is at the center of the president s agenda or to be fighting for tax cuts for the ultra wealthy and corporations that s really where the republicans are focusing with all the data that you all are tracking. would you say that the us economy has achieved a soft landing? so i would certainly say, if you look at where we are today with inflation down by two-thirds and continuing to come down unemployment below 4% for the longest period in 50 years, robust growth very high levels of investment meant factory construction. those are all positives, but we really need to keep working on bringing costs down. that s going to be our focus in terms of grocery, housing, gas prices, health care. that s what s going to be important to american families. so you re saying you don t think think a soft landings yet been achieved or you re not comfortable saying, yeah so i think that we have achieved good labor market more imbalanced and inflation coming down, but we have more work to do and so we re going to keep working to keep the labor market at the good place that he is today and continue to bring costs down because we have more work to do there ai is a topic. biden is going to be discussing g7 liters in italy. it s also a big topic when it comes to ai s future impact on the us economy and jobs. sam altman, who is the founder of openai, he said last month later, one of the the things that annoys me most about people who work on ai is when they stand up with a straight face and say, this will never cause any job elimination. this is just an additive thing. this is just about to be great. all been says, all been goes on to say this is going to eliminate a lot of current jobs. this is going to change the way that occur that a lot i m current jobs function and this is going to create entirely new jobs that always happens with technology what are you planning for on this front and elimination of how many jobs on balance yes. so this is an area where the president was really outfront early on lead in the g7. on recognized seeing the promises of ai. but also that there are some downsides to ai and to put a framework in place where we really we grapple with those comprehensively put safeguards in place. and in particular, on workers thought it was very important to work with labor leaders business leaders, to come out with some principles about how to make sure that ai enables workers. workers are trained aim to take advantage of ai tools to enhance their work enhance their productivity. but that there are safeguards against, for instance surveillance that would impinge on privacy and that workers are given an opportunity to use ai tools as opposed to seeing the kind of displacement impacts. so i don t have updated estimates, but i will say we put out a set of principles and we re going to want to work with labor, with business leaders to integrate ai in ways that american workers have the capability to use ai to enhance their jobs and their remarks and they are just reports because we haven t gotten an official transcript from the meetings. but the reports, these remarks are damaging to the pope s efforts, which have been very sustained over the last few years. now, i asked the vatican for response. they put out a statement about the meeting, but the pope allegedly made these remarks and they said, and i quote, the pope spoke of the danger of ideologies in the church and return to the issue of the admission into seminaries of people with homosexual tendencies, reiterating the need to welcome and accompany them into the church and the prudential indication of the digraphs for the clergy. so the vatican saying this was about the admission of priests or men into the seminary. but of course these questions of this reported remarks lying about his drug use on a federal background check. a third possessing for possessing a gun while addicted to or using illegal drugs. the verdict ended a very stressful week and a half for the biden family. the trial exposing painful details about the extent of hunter s drug use the president embracing his just convicted sun on a tarmac in wilmington shortly after the verdict was handed down, the president releasing the statement, quote, as i said last week, i am the president, but i am also a dad, jill and i love our son and we are so proud of the man he is today. he added as i also said, last week, i will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as hunter considers an appeal reaction came in quickly from across capitol hill. here s a little bit from both sides of the aisle but mr. speaker, you ve been saying two tier system of justice for some time. here s the president s son being convicted on three counts that undercut your clients. it doesn t every case is different and clearly the evidence was overwhelming here. i don t think just the case in the trump trial. i ve not heard a single democrat anywhere in the country cry fraud cry fixed, cry, rigged a cry kangaroo court. you don t hear a single peek out of any democrats saying that why we believe in the rule of law all right, journey is down to discuss deaf kite they re from each side. yeah, it s an interesting democrats have certainly been kind of sticking to the talking point that no one is above the law and they ve been pretty muted in their response or certainly not rushing to the defense of hunter, right now, they re just saying we need to trust the justice system and on the other side, i think it s been interesting to see how republicans are responding to this because of course, we ve heard from some that they are opposed to certain gun laws and they ve been using that as one reason. to kind of push back on the hunter conviction here and we ve also seen republicans say, yeah, maybe they found him guilty in this situation, but this isn t enough. we ve heard from exam, for example, james comer are calling for more investigation into biden family members. so we re seeing them take this and demand more certainly not cheering this very loudly from republicans. yeah, i mean, the way republicans are, i mean, in some ways they re they re almost downplaying it. this was matt gaetz, who of course has been you know it doesn t exactly. shy away from saying inflammatory things. he writes this, the hunter biden gun conviction is kinda dumb to be honest, dbh and then marjorie taylor greene says that what we really should be focused on quote, unquote remains untouched and then she says hunter biden just became the deepstate sacrificial lamb to show that justices balanced, while the other biden crimes remain ignored. she s of course, talking about the sprawling impeachment investigation into the president via some of the business activities of his son that ultimately showed have so far failed to turn up anything extraordinarily incriminating. it does put them in a little bit of a difficult spot when they are saying what they re saying about former president trump s conviction. exactly i mean, the reality is this does undermine some of their arguments that they ve been making for the past several years, that the justice department, that justice system is biased against conservatives and that trump is a victim of this. and now we have hunter biden, the son of the sitting president, a democrat and a very democratic state who is still being found guilty of federal charges. and so that doesn t quite neatly fit into this narrative that republicans have been spinning four. again since 2015, 2016. and so we re seeing them trying to get around on that. of course. and one of the ways they re trying to get around this is by saying, oh see, this was just to make people forget about how bad the case was against trump. they re pointing to this as no politically motivated, still even now, because again, they need to explain this away. how can if the justice system is so rigged, how can hunter biden still be found guilty in a democratic state so in terms of the president himself, i mean, clearly the statement that they put out focused on his role as a dad, you obviously was on camera when he embraced hunter there after this all came down, he did not go to the trial, but his wife, the first lady, jill biden, attended every single day. i mean, what do you hear from sources about how the stress of going through this has affected them as they are the president s campaign for reelection. yeah, i mean, there s no question that joe biden cares a lot about his family. it s a very close-knit family and there s no question that that hunters ongoing issues with addiction and then these criminal cases have impacted him. he is invested the fact that we did see him immediately helicopter to delaware to see hunter after this decision came through shows that he is invested in this. the fact that the first lady was there and you know, every every day at this trial, this is going to impact the family emotionally and it s going to impact joe biden as he is trying to run for reelection in a very closely contested race. whether we see this actually impact 2024 is still an open question. there s no polling that indicates that voters are necessarily going to change. there minds around this. but i do think the biggest impact this could have is on joe biden s focus and how he s willing to campaign and whether he s willing to set this aside and really focus on what needs to be done i mean, look like presidential campaign is a crucible and anything that distracts you has the potential to really kind of effect thanks from a very and he s got this trial coming up in september on tax issues. han fei, those which is of course very squarely in the political calendar, what s unfolding across europe. but also here in the us well, politico wrote it. this way. let s, let s read from it, quote, the three liters or dramatically changing the plot and facing their issues head-on. basically, they argue that the establishment politicians in this case are trying to hold up a global order that is fraying, particularly because of challenges, doesn t totally apply to rishi sunak on the right. but for the germans, the french, and of course, biden here at home with trump it is trying to take on this kind of rising nationalism. how do you look at all of this and what s the conversation like heading into the g7? yeah. well, i think rishi sunak is facing the same thing because whilst the left free labor party is expected to win the election, is the fact that the far right reform party is taken so many votes away from rishi sunak s conservative party. so while he is on the right and the other toura, center-left, they re all in the center and they re all facing a real threat from the right. the idea, i think bringing things forward, macron and sunak bringing on these elections much earlier than people expected. biden going into the debates many people expected, i think is this the theory that if you appeal to the rational side of people with serious policies, then you ll be able to argue that over a longer period of time before people actually go to the polls. but i think the right is very successfully. certainly here in europe, argue it s a bizarre one because they re basically arguing around cost of living, inflation. people can t afford things. so therefore, you need to hunker down stop immigration, stopped sending money to ukraine, stop paying for the environment, which is that idea of the cost of living crisis has always been an argument. the left you successfully in the past and it s in another right is using it. so many people are seeing it really as a failure of the left in many ways, but it s also a big chunk allen s for the center ground yeah. no, it s it s a really interesting way to look at it. i mean, i would also say, i mean, one of the things that is big picture different here and challenging is the security situation, right? i mean the there s an isolationist tendency to the trump situation here. in the the us that quite frankly, really affects how the us will interact with nato, european security. i mean, there are russian warships doing drills 30 miles off the coast of florida that the us military is monitoring right now. and of course there s discussion about how this fits into the recent us decision to allow us weapons to be used across the border with russia. all of that kind of looming over these leaders as they meet know absolutely this is probably says more about russia, doesn t it? this these ships than it does about the us. russia showing its global presence and it s coming through on everything, isn t it? whether right. but they ve been trying to undermine they ve been trying to kind of there s evidence that they ve been trying to encourage and stoke some of this race wing political activity to try and split the west and reduce the security power across the board of the west now, yeah, it s all about creating divisions in the west so they can fill that vacuum with their own or authority in these ships are really a visualization all of that certainly in terms of isolationism, it does come into the right-wing debate here in europe as it does into america, because it s the, question about, do we support ukraine or do we not support ukraine? do we focus our own internal issues? so it all plays into the same thing. so certainly in terms of putin s and she s wider strategy to assert themselves and fill the vacuum on the global stage. the right-wing helps because it the president s son says, he doesn t want to see hunter wind up behind bars because of this deliberating. i was we were not thinking the sentencing and no, i really don t think that hunter belongs in jail a date for sentencing has not been set, but the judge indicated it will likely occur before election day. hunter biden faces up to 25 years in prison and a fine of up to $750,000 for the three charges. but as a first-time offender, he is likely to receive a lesser sentence he also was facing another trial on the horizon, hunter biden s tax trial is set to start on september 5th, joining me now, criminal defense attorney andrew tarkovsky. andrew, good morning to you. thank you so much for being here. can you talk us through what is i likely sentence in this case for the gun charge alone, it is not likely that he will see jail time if you run the federal sentencing calculator, you can get somewhere between about six to ten months as the recommended sentence. but that s well within the area of when judges give some sort of more probationary type of sentence that doesn t have jail time. the problem for hunter is that this conviction, even if it doesn t see jail time on its own, that combined with the september tax trial, if he s convicted of that, would most certainly result in some degree of jail time likely in the neighborhood of a number of years. this conviction would be used as an aggravate are in that case as a factor that would increase the sentence under the guidelines really interesting, what what are the potential sentencing? what would he be looking at if he s convicted on these on these tax charges realistically, that put them at tenure. just give me a little bit more context on what what that could mean. this is an interesting tax case where he has paid his taxes since, but had gone on for a number of years, not only just not paying the taxes but also there s many kind of underlying issues with the way in which he was reporting the taxes, what he was saying he was paying the taxes on versus what he was actually spending his money on. so there are layers of those tax issues at hand. if he s convicted of everything, this is the case that could be generally in the single digits type of years of confinement, i would see a generally in the two to five range, but it s a very difficult number to give you a good idea of at this stage since we don t know what he s convicted of and the federal sentencing guidelines which were once effectively mandatory, are now discretionary. and so it s more of a guidepost. this type of case, tho i think would be in the low single-digits of years of confinement still interesting that there could be repercussions from this case even if there s no jail time here that we could really dramatically affect the outcome there. so can we talk for a second about how the jury made this decision because we are actually and i m interested to know why you think we re hearing so much from the jurors? as it s come out of that we saw some of spoken on camera to other networks this was what one told up politico. they said the defense s decision to call biden s daughter, naomi, to the stand, didn t help his case. i thought it was a mistake. the juror told reporters on tuesday, i think it was probably a strategy they shouldn t have done no daughters should have to testify against her dad at what do you make of what the jurors have come out and said about how they reached this verdict. well, i think it reflects generally the idea that hunter biden was pretty dead to rights the evidence against him was so overwhelming that they had to get to this conviction, but we still see the jurors have sympathy for him. they see this. it sounds like as a relatively minor criminal offense, which it is in scope of federal law and federal criminal prosecutions that typically take place. but that s not necessarily for the jury to decide how serious is this offense. it s a question of what s the evidence actually show us and what s the law say? what the jury isn t essentially debating upon is the impact that s had to the family. the back to those around they seem to indicate this idea that they re hoping that he gets clean and sober go through his rehab. that s all this sort of sympathy that perhaps the defense kind of put forward hoping for a different outcome, whether that was an effort by the defense to actually have jury nullification. we now know that the jury themselves were immune to that. they saw this for what it was calling it a more minor offense. but nonetheless, coming back with the verdict incumbent senator democrat jacky rosen will face republican sam brown in the general election this fall. nevada shaping up to be one of the most important states this election cycle as democrats look to hang out on to their razor thin control of the senate. when everyone votes in november, brown is a purple heart recipient and viewed as a rising star among republicans. and so it is tonight we critical because the senate is literally on a knife edge, right? so every single race matters talk a little bit about me. first of all, he s clearly adopted this dark rhetoric that the trump campaign has about the state of america. this is not the optimistic city on a hill type of message that you would have heard from a ronald reagan era republican. but this does i do think there are some republicans here in washington who think that this was a good outcome. how did this play out? yeah. i mean, republicans, like he said, this is the senate, hangs on literally any one of these seats for democratic incumbents that could flip and republicans would have control the senate. so they ve had this nevada matchups they re called for years in 2022 was the closest senate race in the country. and so as sam brown, this is who the nrsc, i m the national republican senatorial committee. this is who jaylen florida. they re publican governor of nevada. this is the guy they wanted and they got their guy last night by like 44 points in the primary. so it was never really a doubt but yeah. i mean, like you mentioned this, he talks a lot about we don t have an american dream anymore. it s an american nightmare. it reminds me a lot of the american carnage sort of trump first inaugural speech. and i think it shows that question for brown and for all of these challenges this will be how do you appeal to the base that s very pro-trump in states like nevada, where trump hasn t one and pulling this cycle shows maybe this is the year that he does it. but how do you sort of know that this is how you win a primary. this is how you appeal to people while also knowing in nevada it s the non-partisan voters, the independence who you really need to get to that 50% threshold. we ve seen in, in some states that democratic senate, and this is actually backwards from what you sometimes see in other election cycles. but the democratic senate candidates seem to be running ahead of president biden. is that the case in nevada yes. so i mean, you ve seen polls were biden s down by double-digits and rose up like plus one i ve seen polls where trump is up five and rosen s also up five. that d be a level of ticket-splitting and i looked into this and the data does have a pretty significant history of ticket-splitting, but it wasn t a different time when that was just way more for comment. in o for bush won by three points and harry reid, one by 35 points or something. that s very raid specific situation would have been a little yeah. itself, but i think as politics has become more nationalized, as nevada sort of local political culture of boosting incumbents in the senate no matter what, as a small state as that s sort of given way to this national political discourse that s so hyper-partisan. i would be surprised if the split ends up being that big in my mind. who s a trump rozi and voter? it s hard to think of who this person might be. but yes, certainly rozi, like other candidates, is running ahead of biden ben. and so i think it ll be a question for brown now of how do i get these voters who think they re going to vote for trump are considering trump, but might be skeptical of me. how do i speak to them so let s i m talking across. nevada was not the only state that help primers last night. we also had one in south carolina and the primary that was being most closely watched was nancy mace, who of course, voted to oust former house speaker kevin mccarthy. and mccarthy had made it a project to try to get the second name on that screen over the finish line, catherine templeton challenged nancy mace in this it s a charleston area, south carolina district so mace came out on top here. how much of an embarrassment is that for mccarthy? i mean, look, i think it s curious to see what mccarthy we ll do next, right. those rumors that if trump wins, he could be chief of staff or something. i think it just shows that once you re out of congress, you re out of congress, right? here lewin s is somewhat limited in what you can do. he s been trying to behind the scenes enact some sort of revenge on the people who took him down. mace, i think particular really got under his skin because his office had tried to help her with her legislative priorities. there was a good long piece of slate. this week all about sort of her interesting political demeanor. but yeah, confused a lot of people for sure. but i guess, i guess voters and south carolina s first district still felt good about it. so yeah, i do think for mccarthy, like i said, once you re out, you re out with congress yeah. i before i let you go, i want to touch on what we could see play out in the house today. there is some reporting that we have here at cnn that there are a handful of house republicans who are privately voiced concerns about a plan to hold merrick garland in contempt of congress. but they did announce last night they re going to go forward with this vote today. what do you expect on the floor? i think that ll be interesting. i mean, the fact that there s all these reports, the reports that they might have pulled it, the fact that there budding the vote on the floor, i mean, this is not a republican whip team that s been uber successful in exactly where the votes are. so i don t think anyone will be surprised if it were to fail typically, i think but the moderates have been upset about something they usually do, keep it off the floor. they re pretty open with leadership about their concerns. they re not right. the freedom caucus, i m not trying to wreak havoc on the floor. so the fact that they are bringing is a floor or i mean, we ll see i think this is the closer we get to the election, the more and more people are not going to want to take tough votes, particularly on such hyper-partisan things like rice this is a tough thing for some of the more moderate, moderate republicans in the house. all right, gabby, thank you very much for your time hamas did submit a response proposing amendments to the israeli proposal, adjustments to the or adding a timeline for a permanent ceasefire. and with thrall from gaza, this there seems to be an awful lot of fog around where each side stands on this proposal at all. can you kind of try to help us understand clearly where are the israelis on this? are they a definitive yes. and what this means from hamas that we saw yesterday today there s one key part of this peace deal that the ceasefire deal that each side keeps trying to change hamas wants to include some sort of permanent ceasefire in the deal what they have, what they ve been offered right now is phases six weeks was submit exchange, and a temporary ceasefire that then becomes permanent after some negotiations midway through they don t want that the israelis meanwhile benjamin netanyahu government he cannot say yes to a deal that has a permanent ceasefire in it because that will instantly dissolve his government. the hard-right members of his coalition have threatened to pull out if he signs up any deal that has a permanent ceasefire in it. so that s why you ve got a lot of stuff decided on the edges. but this one key point hamas wants to be able to survive and keep fighting and netanyahu s political survival is based on making sure hamas can t do that. therein lies the crux of the matter so what is the way out of that? but it s very hard to see it way out of that. that s why the original deal as the white house had shared with the world, has these phases where you get a bunch of the hostages back, you get prisoner exchanges. so that was sweetening it for the palestinian side that they get some of their hardline prisoners out and then you use that momentum of that progress to get through the second stage of the deal. so that perhaps netanyahu could then go back to his hardline coalition and go back to israel haley public and say see, i got all so many of the hostages out. now, it s time to have an off-ramp for this, but you got to agree to the first part to get to that second kim, let s talk about the sort of broader tensions in the region because we have seen slit, escalating back-and-forth between
