New Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre director sees long term future with the gallery

Zara Stanhope is the new director of Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre. She left a role in Brisbane to take up the new job.
The new director of New Plymouth's contemporary art gallery says she's in it for the long haul.
Dr Zara Stanhope had her first day at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre's (GBAG/LLC) on Monday, having moved from a role in Brisbane.
Stanhope was released from MIQ in Christchurch on February 4, and has been in Auckland catching up with family and friends, as well as travelling to Waitangi to learn more about the treaty, before arriving in New Plymouth.

New Plymouth Airport a safe space for LGBTQI+ community

In a joint statement with the airport, Novak said a safe space was one where the LGBTQI+ community can freely express themselves without fear.
It does not guarantee 100 per cent safety, rather, it’s a space that “has your back” if an incident (violence, bullying, or hate speech) were to occur, he said.

Artist Shannon Novak started the Safe Space Alliance, a website with a register of places across the globe that are recognised safe spaces for the LGBTQI+ community.
“So if I walked into the airport holding hands with my partner, and someone started hurling homophobic abuse at me - I would feel confident knowing I could alert someone in the airport to the behaviour and be supported. “

New Plymouth council says it got it wrong when it chose not to promote the powerful Tai Moana Tai Tangata exhibition at its Govett Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre to general news media.
Instead, it pitched Brett Graham's commentary on the impact of colonialism on Māori to specialist arts contacts only.
A gallery insider said Graham's show appeared to frighten the council which wanted to avoid controversy.
