Apr. 7—JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri Senate confirmed former GOP chairman Todd Graves to a seat on the University of Missouri Board of Curators early Wednesday.
Graves' nomination was advanced out of a Senate committee despite some objections last week, but soon slammed into opposition on the Senate floor. It came to a vote after close to 12 combined hours of filibuster, which forced Senate President Dave Schatz to table the nomination last Thursday and bring it back after a long weekend.
Graves was confirmed with 19 votes, including one Democrat. Four Republicans voted no alongside all nine other Democrats in the chamber.

A bipartisan coalition of state Senators was unable to stop politically connected Kansas City attorney Todd Graves from winning a seat on the University of Missouri Board of Curators.
After a two-round filibuster — three hours last week and eight more hours ending around 1 a.m. Wednesday — the Senate voted 19-13 to give the former state Republican Party chairman a six-year term on the board.
Only one Democrat, Sen. Brian Williams of Ferguson, joined with Republicans to support Graves. Four Republicans — Sens. Bill Eigel of Weldon Spring, Denny Hoskins of Warrensburg, Mike Moon of Ash Grove and Paul Wieland of Imperial — voted against Graves along with nine Democrats.

Missouri Senators question former GOP chair's appointment to UM curator's role

Missouri Senators question former GOP chair's appointment to UM curator's role

Mar. 31—JEFFERSON CITY — Former GOP Chair Todd Graves' appointment to the University of Missouri Board of Curators was approved by a Senate committee Wednesday, despite some members' misgivings about his partisan political background.
Members of the Senate's Gubernatorial Appointments committee questioned Graves' history of partisan political influence, particularly the state GOP's payment of $200,000 to a PAC tied to Graves and his powerful Kansas City law firm, Graves Garrett LLC, in 2019.
The PAC was focused on overturning a redistricting reform provision in the ballot initiative known as Clean Missouri, which passed in 2018. The expenditure angered some Republicans, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Graves had represented opponents of the measure and his firm was involved in drafting the legislation that overturned it last year.

During a hearing Thursday on the commission’s budget for the coming year, State Rep. Sarah Unsicker, D-Shrewsbury, asked for details about the report delivered to the commission in January by the Kansas City law firm Graves Garrett.
She was told that only commissioners have seen it.
