Robert MacNeil, the creator and first anchor of PBS 'NewsHour' nightly newscast, has died. He was 93.

Robert MacNeil, the veteran PBS newsman who co-founded and co-hosted the long-running PBS NewsHour and MacNeil/Lehrer Report with Jim Lehrer, died today of natural causes at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. He was 93.

A Canadian-born journalist who delivered sober evening newscasts for more than two decades on PBS, Robert MacNeil was the co-anchor of “The MacNeil/Lehrer Report,” later expanded as “The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour."

MacNeil spent time at NBC News early in his career and was a reporter for the network in Dallas on the day President John Kennedy was assassinated.
