Tributes flow for James Cassan at celebration of life | Mercer Island Reporter

Legendary Mercer Island High School wrestling coach Paul Jackson was one of several individuals who paid tribute to Mercer Island developer and business leader James Cassan at a standing-room-only celebration of life at Encounter Church on Feb. 24. Coach Jackson praised Cassan as one who made time in his busy schedule to support his two sons and daughter in their sports activities at the high school. Cassan played football at Boise Junior College and was part of the 1958 national championship; the first of only two national championships Boise has claimed. Cassan passed away at the age of 83 on Dec. 13. Photo courtesy of Greg Asimakoupoulos

Chabad Mercer Island holds menorah lighting on first day of Chanukah

More than 250 people came to the menorah lighting celebration at Mercerdale Park on Dec. 7, the first of the eight days of Chanukah. Rabbi Nissan Kornfeld of Chabad Mercer Island used a bucket lift to reach the top of the 12-foot menorah and light first the middle flame, then one on the right. Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, recalls the victory of more than 2,100 years ago of “a militarily weak but spiritually strong Jewish people over the mighty forces of a ruthless enemy that had overrun the Holy Land and threatened to engulf the land and its people in darkness,” said the printed programs prepared by Chabad. “A little light expels a lot of darkness.” The family-friendly gathering featured live music, hot apple cider, balloon tying, a dreidel game, prayers, blessings and group songs such as “Chanukah, Oh Chanukah, come light the Menorah. Let’s have a party, we’ll all dance the hora.” About 20% of Mercer Island residents are Jewish, and recent antisemitic incidents on the Island made this year’s event especially important, many participants said. For Mother's Day: A tale of two Elsies

As we observe Mother's Day once again this year, I'm mindful of a mother by the name of Elsie. That was the name her parents chose when she was born 96 years ago.
