By Antonio Ray Harvey | California Black Media - The California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) celebrated the 50th anniversary of hip hop on Aug. 14, with a tribute to the West Coast pioneers, leaders and innovators who shaped the genre.

They escaped the Maui wildfire relying on their five senses and friends and neighbors running up and down the street warning, “The fire’s a mile away,” “half a mile,” “a few blocks.”

Hip-hop turns 50 on Friday, Aug. 11, and The Times has compiled 50 moments in which the genre changed the world.
