VOLCANO UNLIKELY TO IMPACT ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA

Report filed by Raghib Apparicio – News Reporter A disaster management official is allaying concerns that this country could be impacted by a tsunami if there were to be an explosive eruption of St Vincent and the Grenadines’ La Soufriere Volcano. Director of the National Office of Disaster Services Philmore Mullin addressed the issue on Antigua Barbuda Today. He warns however the Caribbean’s geographical location places it at increased risk from disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Tsunamis are often after-effects of these disasters. An effusive eruption began last month at the La Soufrière Volcano, where the lava flows steadily from the ground.

Monitoring systems, satellite imagery and visual observations have confirmed increased seismic and fumarolic activity, strong gas emissions, emergence of a satellite dome on the South-East of the existing volcanic dome and changes to the crater lake. An effusive eruption within the crater, with visible gas and steam, was also observed on 29 December 2020.
