Meet top music supervisor Ciara Elwis
In this piece via Spotify For Artists music supervisor and Spotify alum Hilary Hughes delves into her quest for the perfect soundtrack for the HBO Max show ‘I May Destroy You,’ and the close relationship between playlists and songs in helping to tell stories on screen.
Guest post by
The Spotify alum explains her pursuit of the perfect soundtrack for ‘I May Destroy You’ and the connections between playlists and the songs that help tell your favorite stories on screen.
When Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You enthralled and devastated viewers in the summer of 2020, the series was hailed for its phenomenal performances (especially the star-turn of Coel, the series’ creator, co-director, and lead actress) and the vibrant world it built for Coel’s character, Arabella, a writer who survives and processes a traumatic sexual assault in East London. It was also rightfully praised for its soundtrack, which worked hits from Nicki Minaj, Daft Punk, Janelle Monáe, Rosalía, and more into a mix that also featured the modern jazz of English acts like The Comet Is Coming and Sons of Kemet.

Cher said of the host and his show: “I would consider it! I have watched it…. He’s smart and I love him.
“He’s the coolest guy ever. What he’s been able to do is amazing.”
Though Cher hasn’t graced the
Drag Race stage yet, her son, Chaz Bono, participated in a season six interview challenge alongside Cher’s mother, Georgia Holt. The pair also joined the judging panel later in the episode.
Drag Race also paid homage to the music legend in season 10 for Cher: The Unauthorised Rusical, which saw contestants each embody a different era of the singer’s career. She even made a video appearance on the episode but didn’t set foot into the actual werk room.

Do you remember these 70s and 80s kids' movies?

Parents today can turn to kids’ movies from the 1970s and 1980s for many wonderful teachable moments that still resonate today. For kids who struggle with life lessons, children’s movies often have the answers. In
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, we are treated to a humorous but familiar look at the characteristics of terribly behaved children who are rude, greedy, and selfish; in the end, the rewards go to the honest, kind, and patient child.
Movies of the 70s and 80s tended to have less intense special effects, more happy endings, and humor that is more slapstick than subtle.  Whether the old-timey G and PG movies we love are about our favorite superhero, body-swapping mixup, human-animal connection, underdog athlete, book-loving child, imagination fantasy, or animated story of love and loss, 70s and 80s kids’ movies taught kids valuable life lessons about the importance of honesty, integrity, and kindness to ourselves and others.

'Of dizzying beauty': The many faces of Georgetown's Black art community

To call the present moment in pop culture a “renaissance in Black art” would be a given. On silver screens and through radio waves, between stanzas, and, yes, in even TikTok shorts, Black artists are and always have been cultural vanguards, even while powerful institutions have failed to paythemproper dues. In a year stocked with violence, loss, and grief, Black art has been a lightning rod for joy and mourning alike.
At Georgetown, too, the Black creative community thrives on, producing vibrant art on a campus much more designed for white consultants than Black artists. As singers, actors, poets, dancers, rappers, writers, or something else entirely, these creatives have developed unforgettable, heartful work.

The 21-year-old psychology student joined the team in 2017 and has been making great strides ever since and keeping on top of the ball even when the game was shut down during COVID.
“You couldn’t go out and see the girls and be surrounded by good energy, it’s definitely mentally taxing. Trying to stay fit and doing the running programs the club was sending us and it was quite hard but as soon as we got back out there it was a quick switch and I was back to normal,” Haractsis told
