Sounds apt to listen. On am and f.m. Around the u.k. On digital and online I'm Roger Sharpe and we're up all my. We'll take a look at what Donald Trump is driving out by stopping California or attempting to stop California for setting lower limits for car emissions and how that might affect the American auto industry We'll also talk a little bit more about the Israeli election and we have news of the United States Navy officially describing the objects in 3 videos as identified aerial phenomena they might as well of called them identified flying objects. Well he was trying for a 5th time has the spell been broken Benjamin Netanyahu still waiting to see if he can form a government after yesterday's or choose days as it is no Israeli election one of has political opponents the head of the Arab list TB actually went on Twitter a few hours ago thanking Mr Netanyahu for driving up the Arab for he said our campaign was asleep weak and limping to Stu weeks ago then a week ago someone a magician set off alarm clocks at the entrances to every time that was Benjamin Netanyahu that was the cameras Bill Well let's let's have a word about the Arab vote in the selection and what the consequences are if Mr Netanyahu indeed as unable to form the next government with Professor no on plank or who is the director of the straw I'm Jewish Study Center at the University of Washington and the author of Zionism on the roads not taken Hello Professor. Thank you for having me Michel Well thank you can you 1st of all explain Mr T.B.'s remark for us what what is the camera spell. Or what just 1st or just accusation here joining list I believe that Helen Thomas Nash and oh yes sir. Is On The He's on the joint list as in the yes and so the. The place that that he joined us joined that is very interesting that you have Arab Arab Israelis who. Gained a very number of seats and this election now they're 13 seats which is quite a scandal the 3rd largest. Coalition party at the election so it'll be tough thing to see where they end up staying in as the coalition negotiations begin. They will and they are a significant player in the selection are they I mean 13 seats is hardly sneezed. Well it's a fascinating question about the place that Arab Israelis play in the electorate as a democracy as Israel is you have the opportunity to vote and over the last several years air Israelis have consolidated their ability and created a joint press which has now increased their their power their question for these coalition negotiations there's whether or not the coalitions will be willing to include the Join us the air Israeli parties in the coalition government. Well let's see about the cameras bill and it didn't succeed but what was it the cameras bill and in terms of the effort to prevent any tampering of the polls without referring to inquire here I guess the thing that got the Arab was so sore worktop the hospital he says sent the Arabs to the polls when our allies him out of the state precisely abuse in the hope as he has done often at the beginning. During the election cycle as used pushing to try to gain or victory will turn and raised the threat of Arab Israelis taking over the government and in fact I remember being in the elections in Israel during the nation any 5 elections and there was actually a bumper sticker that said. T.v. Or Bibi Ahmed t.v. The same person that you imagine or Bibi Netanyahu as a way of really scaring Israeli voters at least those who might support Bibi into coming to the polls so what happened in the last week or so is that Bibi Netanyahu has been raising the concerned that there will be border fraud among the Arab Israeli population and try to work. Wanted to put Cameron's to patrol the border the motor permits and that I think is what the court you mentioned was talking about it raised a significant energy among the Arab Israeli population to actually vote in the elections and they voted primarily for the joint list or for nothing at its main opponent which was where party. Can we talk a little bit about the place of Donald Trump in the selection cuz he's been very useful or he should have been very useful there was the theory to Prime Minister Netanyahu but he's he's been pretty lukewarm in his reception of the news you know that Mr Netanyahu is in some sort of electoral trouble. Yes or no has relied very heavily on his relationship with Donald Trump there were images the campaign images for beauty you know in Israel many of them had pictures of Bibi and Trump together and I think many Israelis are quite supportive of Donald Trump and I think so now this relationship with him as being a very important part of the. Changes that Shrum has allowed to happen or encouraged to happen in in Israel so their relationship is one that helped build that note and it's also helped dull dull time as well it goes both ways Trump has benefited from his close relationship with Bibi Netanyahu in terms of his own ability to try and galvanize his supporters to demonstrate his start strong support for Israel. And can you explain to us what Mr Netanyahu has called for. Supporting Zionism actually meant to his supporters because he used the word a lot didn't he in the latter part of the campaign. Yes Asinus is a complicated. Time isn't is that the Jewish national. Interest national movement historically and the way I understood it starts a secular movement as it is a historically it is a secular movement it is a movement there that always was open to religious practices and and the importance of. Jewish customs and rituals even if they were part of a secular national culture. Zionism from its earliest articulations was interested in creating both the Jewish and democratic state. The. Was talking about when he is trying to. Use or or or or points concerns that their line isn't may be threatened my understanding is that he is trying to raise the concerned that there are none Zionist other words there are people who do not believe in the Jewish character of the state which are the Israeli Arabs who might end up being another political power to undermine if you are a character of the state. And end in very general terms if Mr Netanyahu is not able to form a next government that there will be big consequences in the region want though this is this is somewhere where you know we're going to have plenty of time to go our supporters and discussions in the coming weeks but but who's going to miss Mr Netanyahu. Well you know one there are a lot of regional factors right now obviously today the situation in Iran in Saudi Arabia Netanyahu has built a lot of his injury as usual as international political capital in order to try and pressure Iran and recently he finally succeeded in that year lot easier multi year long attempt to try and end he run deal which will be entering the Obama years so billionaire has clearly been a very strong advocate very hawkish towards Iran whether or not. The next prime minister it's not even that you know will change that will change position or not it's difficult to know it was not something that Benny Gantz the head of the blue and white army was tremendously focused on during the elections as far as I understand so it is difficult to know what the attitude whether what will happen in terms of the relationship with Iran there is another prime minister well we prefer Supreme Court thank you very much for joining us today My pleasure thank you for having me note for the 1st time the u.s. Navy has officially described the objects and 3 videos taken by u.s. Navy pilots as unidentified aerial phenomena the footage comes from Navy planes flying in heavily restricted air space 2 of these been seen before but the 3rd video was released by the u.f.o. Research organization established by the musician Tom De Long. Says an author and freelance journalist who specializes in paranormal culture and he's been looking into this for the tech news site motherboard Hello I'm Gerri. Hello nice to be here by sorry with us well. This is bringing to mind an era we are video that we have I think seen of something that seems to duck and dive very quickly or is it just because whoever we were speaking to about this year or so ago talked about the incredible speed with which the object appeared to be moving what do we actually see in this video. Well in the in the 3 videos in question we sort of see a similar objects or 2 objects that form in ways according to the pilots who were there as well as the testimony of some other individuals who were serving on the various vessels at the time were performing in ways that decides all known physics and known aviation you know practice and possibility so so this thing whatever these objects are according to the witnesses are clearly moving in ways that they shouldn't be able to move and you know compared to some other u.f.o. Sightings we get you know this seems to be a continuation I suppose of the u.f.o. Narrative right this this these objects that should not exist yet clearly do. Yeah. That's right this is I'm I'm kind of reminded of the snow from your story in fact and on vice the the the story goes back to 2017 doesn't it when the New York Times was talking about these Navy pilots who had been debriefed by this extraordinary and kind to I mean tell it remind us what happened and what they said they were they were talking about sure in December 27th teen The New York Times released an article as well as footage from 2 declassified videos that were taken in 20042016. By Navy pilots and it sort of took the world by storm this is the 1st time the world had ever seen footage from the American military sort of aiming aviators and ultimately we had a certain video released we now know which is connected to the 2015 video release and it sort of exploded onto the scene and it really drew. Mission to the fact that American air space is being violated by objects that we now know according to the u.s. Navy the official statement they've given. They actually don't know what they are either which kind of gives and should give everyone pause and perhaps some concern . As that it's truly fascinating that they haven't released any more videos have they they've just they've just actually talked about these these videos for what we assume is the 1st time we're told it's the 1st time yeah that currently the Navy has has stated they have no intention of releasing anything else in fact these 3 videos were not supposed to be released to the public anyway we're not really sure and I'm assuming the Navy is keeping their cards pretty close to their chest here but we're not really sure who released these videos to the public we're not really sure the process that was taken and there's been some speculation and I want to sort of clearly state it's speculation that they were potentially lead to illegally which would be sort of bad news for anyone involved in that but unfortunately you know for the Navy Anyway these videos are now out there sort of in the public record and there's not much more they can do about that but the intention moving forward is is if if any more reports of unknown vehicles aerial vehicles rather are made to enable superiors top brass they are going to remain classified. Going and going back to that point and and the earlier the Scotians that we had in the earlier story didn't they Hammad the problem for investigating unidentified flying objects and the department disband the defund or something yes that's right we learned as a result of 2017 articles in The New York Times that the Pentagon ran a very quiet program known as a tip which stands for oh my goodness now I'm totally blank on the but the acronym means it's the advanced aviation I can remember I'm embarrassing my Soviet investigation Yeah yeah right investigates right yes something that affects and it was also based on an earlier program called OS app which was investigating sort of advanced weapons systems and it all had to deal with you know the study of advanced propulsion exotic physics as well as the study of and identified aerial phenomena so this program began in the mid 2000 and it was sort of defunded in 2012. Because I guess it was stated that there was no real threat present however there has again been sort of rumor and speculation that the program is continuing under a different name or it's sort of continuing on under the radar of certain individuals in the Pentagon or other military bodies within the American government . So you know for sure we're doing a lot of speculation here officially a tip is no longer a funded program by the Pentagon to study us close however you know whether that's sure not we have to sort of leave that up to our our speculative most creative minds. And do we know I mean we you said this was a highly classified area where these videos were taken Do we know roughly where it was we do we know that the 2004 video so it's come. Only known as the flea or one video or the tic tac video this was taken off the coast of California by a naval aviator flying off of the u.s.s. Nimitz which is an American aircraft carrier it's it's part of sort of a large sort of flotilla of multiple vessels battleships submarines they're sort of constantly going up and down the Pacific Coast and this was during a training exercise in the month of November 2004 where naval aviators were in a training exercise and then quickly dispatched to a real life scenario and you know fundamentally engaged with some sort of objects. That they couldn't identify and it was according to the pilots performing maneuvers that were completely impossible and one of the pilots gnashed to shoot a video with the f. 18 gun camera so it's a sort of a mounted camera that sits on the bottom of the aircraft that records what's in front of it the 2nd 2 videos known as gimbal and go fast we know are the same or the same sort of events they were taken on in January 25th off the coast of Florida. By the u.s. As a by study by pilots off of the u.s.s. Roosevelt which is a Nimitz class carrier as well so 2 aircraft carriers and again according to the pilots this these objects were sort of performing incredible maneuvers and the sort of the gimbal video is the one that's the most stunning because it's the sort of disc like object that then tilts on its side and then continues to move without sort of slowed slowing down or changing out a tude which we know you know in sort of contemporary modern aviation an aircraft can't do that it would get ripped apart but in this video it's it does it. Right that's it my gosh And just finally a part of semantics is the Navy calling this an identified aerial phenomena just a cute way of getting around calling it an identified flying object as yeah I think I think realistically you know u f O's carry with it a very specific political and cultural you know weight behind the right you have those automatically are associated with alien spaceships from faraway planets carrying you know little green men so I think the Navy is sort of compelled now it's it's no longer use that terminology because it brings up all the cultural baggage that the acronym carries u.a.a.p. Is actually I believe was initially developed by a British term used by the British air force to identify the known aerial vehicles or just any sort of aerial phenomena for whether Saddam you know very prosaic stuff that. You know just couldn't be identified at the moment but the American Navy as quickly picked it up what were the last decade or so has become really the buzzword now within u.f.o. Circles to sort of mean official u.f.o. Reports and identified aerial tsunami as kind of the new u.f.o. We need to be cautious though right this does not necessarily mean that the objects in the videos are you know extra tress shrill in any way it could be a whole bunch of things that are perfectly prosaic. Is just you know there's a lot of excitement because the Navy has for the 1st time pointed to 3 objects and 3 videos and said you know we actually don't know what these are. And they are an American airspace. Thank you very much. It's going to have leisure Thank you. Great. Talking to us about. I mean you a piece I mean you a piece of course. Some of the leading members of the international sports industry were in London this week to talk about the current state and the future of the business is the co-founder of e-sports and cider the organizers of e.s.i. London and up all night it's game on presenter Adam Russia coke about the decision to bring investors venture capitalists and fund holders into the event this is the 1st year we've added the new elements in London which is called the clutch which is the pitch and investment competition so we've got some very renowned investors that have made a big splash in the space already such as rewired which is a group that invested 20000000 in the team vitality we have motor birth from big craft which is one of the largest is was dedicated funds as well we would have had an Gammons from h.s.b.c. Private so I think add in this element to sell and that has definitely made a difference and exactly that like our main focus and to some extent why we run these events is to help professionalize and help to grow the industry and events like this which have the right people speak in and bring everyone together from the brands that have done nothing any sports yet and still have a lot to learn they can come here and meet the C.E.O.'s of the teams and the people that have been in Eastwood's for a long time I mean fanatic have been around for 15 years now and fanatics survived the expansion and then the sort of the bubble partially deflating that which happened a couple of years ago so it's important that they're here to talk to people about how you develop an industry which doesn't overcook itself which doesn't overheat for sure I think there are some people that may be overinflated or have been in the past few years over inflated in the hype of e Sports which is detrimental for everyone. Aaron e Sports as a whole to the n.b.a. For example in my opinion is pointless because any sports fan is well you have c.s. Go fans you have a League of Legends fans in the East was fan is kind of a meaningless term and so I think people will see these big numbers and get very excited but then Brett I mean we have major brands in the space now everyone from d.h.l. To Miss Avies Benz to be co which is a kitchen appliances company and once they are spending money they're not spending the sorts of money yet that they do in a lot of traditional sports and what we need to be better at as an industry one of the things we need to be better as as an industry is proven so these brands there and investors alike that there is an r a y and one challenge with that is currently exceeding the high levels of expectation because of these big numbers that are being floated around big numbers in terms of audiences big numbers in terms of participation but r o y So in a return on investment so when a brand sponsors when he does once a Manchester United for example I'm sure there are a lot of sauce and a lot of decks and a lot of analyses of what they get in return where their brand is seen and viewed and so on and so for the sports teams and thrice holders getting better at that is is there a way to go you know it's about metrics you can you can track how many shirts you sold you can track how many pairs of shoes you've sold with that particular branding on and see if it's a good return on your investment your are you're quite right because the problem is that 3 sports is the retinas don't necessarily turn into returns to that they're watching but they might not be fully and understand even buying into the advertisers they are buying into the that the sponsorship the team is is receiving Exactly and that's another challenge we have any sports as an industry as a whole is that what I put it this way when I want to watch the football on a Sunday on Monday almost every day there. We there are at Premier League sky sports you have to buy the package bt have to buy the package as and prime now as well of course some of the rights any sports almost all of that consent from the absolute 01 competitions to so everything else is free to watch and that's been the way of eastwards for a long time since its early days and since which became a thing and as an acquired switch in 24 scene that people will still view the content on there for free and I think that is something that. Has to change in terms of monetizing the viewers because the likes of e.s.l. Face and so on will not be able to continue to put on the incredible amounts that they do with the incredible production values that they do if there isn't some money flowing through the industry more widely when Amazon took on Twitch was a little bit of a surprise in a lot of courters but I'll be honest with you I wasn't because Amazon seems to be the company which understands the burn understands that you burn at the beginning in order to create a marketplace and they have cried they have a huge audience so at some point they're going to sort of turn the tap down if not off and then say right these liars you're going to have to start paying for even if it's on pay per view or single instance by matter where it's going to be that money is going to come in there is no for sure which is obvious the has the dominant market share for viewership in Western markets China is a very different story but the likes of mix. Facebook making a bigger play and then linear t.v. As well is now very much recognizes that there is an opportunity with e-sports So I think that's better rather than more competition the better for the space bar you said nice audience is not necessarily an audience for all of the sports there are an audience for legal legends or for c.s. Go or for rocket league it's not like a football somebody who watches football will in them in the. Summer watch cricket you don't kind of I don't think you get that kind of cross-over in these audiences do you know it so I mean essentially I always say that is what is very much like sports in that way like I for example watched football tennis books in couldn't care less about American football basketball is not really that much difference Eastwood's I mean League of Legends as a game is in high only different entertainment products than c.s. Go up from the facts that it's any sport. I mean there was an interest in stat actually from one of the presentations today so Sky books technology's a thing Cooper who's the c.e.o. There they reckon 81 percent of the sports fans only actually watch and for the Appreciate one title 81 percent and yeah I'd say that's certainly not far off. Sport this is b.b.c. Radio 5 Live on digital b.b.c. Sound smart and on Good Morning we're getting off to a rather chilly start to many places once again this morning feeling a little autumnal out there and another autumn weather feature some patchy fog here in there as well but actually the forecast for the next few days is going to feel a bit more like summer something warmer developing those temperatures climbing certainly as we head through today tomorrow and into Saturday and with that they'll be a lot of dry weather and plenty of sunshine to go around as well but let's start off with the forecast for Scotland today because here actually there is quite a lot of cloud around at the moment the cloud capable of producing the arts but a drizzle across the far north of Scotland was ago today that crash tend to break up and we will see more in the way of sunshine I think particularly through the latter part of the afternoon temperatures around 17 to 19 degrees north here around 1st thing some of those could be quite dense could hang around through the rush hour but they tend to clear relatively quickly and then should see a large amounts of sunshine particular as we get on in the afternoon temperatures around 19 or 20 degrees and for England Wales a bit Apache cloud around. As well but again the lift will see some stars of sunshine and there might be a little more crowd than we had yesterday just rolling in some north sea coasts across East Anglia down into the southeast but certainly it will stay dry and those temperatures ranging from 19 to 22 degrees just a touch up on where we were yesterday now through this evening and tonight Long clear spells across just about all parts or the u.k. Some patchy crowd here in there little bit breezy in the West but where the winds are light of course parts of southeast Scotland eastern England you might see one of the patches they should clear another dry and mostly sunny day on Friday and a very. California's governor I got a Gavin Newsome is hopping mad with the trumpet ministration the Republican Party what happened to states' rights he wants to know the trumpet ministrations trip to California of the right to set its strict vehicle emissions standards President Trump says it will not only make cars cheaper but also in his words much safer heras governor Newsome Mr Trump what and who is this for the companies the automobile manufacturers don't want it so is it about Marathon Petroleum look them up because it is it's about the oil industry period full stop it's not about the car manufacturers not about consumers it's not about the health it's not about our economy it's about oil companies. California has been moving towards a standard of more than 15 miles per gallon in the 2020s Mr Trump wants to move the spike to something like $37.00 mpg and then July 4 major car manufacturers Ford Honda Volkswagen man b.m.w. Reached a voluntary agreement with California to reduce vehicle emissions the trumpet ministration responded by launching an investigation into whether this was a violation of competition law because I knew some saying he'll move to days move to fight yesterday's move in court this was a move you know demonstrably move to assert power and dominance aggressive move against the state. A few days before u.n. Climate week. To punctuate a point and and it's a point that's been advanced by previous administrations the. 100 waivers have been approved over and over and over again courts have upheld our rights of these waivers some tough it will prevail eventually will take years and years and years more uncertainty more anxiety but California will prevail because we're leaders in this space. We're leaders in this space we're not going to talk about the politics of this here but we are going to talk about the effects and the history of California and its emissions standards with Professor Ed a vol He's professor of clinical preventive medicine and had of the vision of environmental health at the University of Southern California's k. School of Medicine you may have heard him with our friend Peter bows about a month ago talking about this very topic and about the health impact of reducing emissions of automotive vehicles I mean cars of course Hello Professor a whole. Hello how are you very well very well indeed Well let's get let's go back a little bit in history how long has California been a bit different in this field I long as California actually been setting its own emission standards Well California has had the lead in this mission control effort since 1970 really when the Clean Air Act was 1st passed in this country and so we've always been granted waivers because it's always been agreed that California had a particularly severe air pollution problem and in the in the 1970 legislation what were the big chains What were they working to you know avoid and what were the standards in those days that they actually said well under the Clean Air Act There are a set of international standards that are assigned for everyone to follow but the waiver was that states could apply some more strict standards if they felt they could make the case that there was a need to do so California's always effectively made that case and that has resulted in things like catalytic converters and more sophisticated control systems on the cars which has resulted in cleaner air and healthy lines for California very quickly the rest of the country adopted not just those early on there were actually 2 types of vehicles California 9 California vehicles that were sold in this country but within a few years everybody sort of shifts in this because it just makes sense. So the way that the story is being told today there are states which explicitly follow California regulations but in point of fact the entire American car industry has moved into line a behind these California standards has it. Yes because California's and terms of population of course is the largest state in the country and in terms of vehicle sales accounts for something like 12 percent of total vehicle sales in the country and So 'd it's sort of as California goes so goes the nations or doesn't make economic sense for good on many factors who are making improved the ickle to have different versions of their goals around the country what the president seems to be talking about is the the weight of cars. And perhaps you could remind us about Ralph Nader and the safety campaigns of the past they would seem to talk about very very heavy vehicles you know being being safer for the people who are driving in them. Yeah I'm not exactly sure what the line of logic is on the part of the federal government here because of course we also have smaller vehicles on the road in California as well I think the issue is not only the size but the effective operation of then because it the change for example from over 50 mpg to something under you know a $35.00 or 40 miles a gallon would mean dramatically more gasoline consumed and more pollution which converts to more respiratory disease and more health problems for all of the people breathing the air. And from again to be going back to the history of the thing went to the catalytic converter and for widespread use was in the in the mid ninety's some to use yes I believe that's about right you know invariably what's happened to the automotive industry is initially. To be honest some foot dragging and saying well we can't do that the technology doesn't exist but they've 'd been very resourceful the engineers have been very clever and with every challenge to clean up cars ever much more there's been the resultant improvements in control technology in the vehicles improved fuels and more efficiency and So 'd 'd what's happened over the course of time is a good cause of that dramatic a cleaner and now even as it go a few years older is dramatically more polluting than the current version so that you know it's turned over the fleet everybody likes to have a new shiny current turn over the fleet results 'd in ever cleaner cars on the road and then before this particular row What were you looking forward to or what kind of changes are in the pipeline. Well again they're you know we're we've been pushing particularly hard in California to try and get the actually the larger heavy duty you trucks under control because there's bigger older vehicles that do well a lion's share of cargo movement etc transport movement of goods also turned out to be sort of the heavier polluters both literally and figuratively on the road and so they set a lag behind the cleanup in passenger vehicles there are a few of them in total number but their emissions are significant and so we've been working hard to try and force those manufacturers and put into place emission standards that improve those operations to get the diesel emissions out of the air and. Well I'm sure most of us would say keep up the good work thank you very much professor and. Probably. In India the government has announced a buy on Isa grants that a forward thinking you would think. Speaking to a poll might show who time the bite. It doesn't at the moment rod which I think is is left some people slightly surprise when Nirmal and see that Aman had her press conference this morning basically announcing that India was going to tackle the problem of the cigarette or announcement I think was interesting we're going to hear a bit of it in a few seconds time was interesting for 2 reasons firstly because while she's banned the sale of. Cigarettes the transport of the cigarettes the marketing of the cigarettes the storage of the cigarettes and 9 different categories the one category that we're not quite clear on this are you still are allowed to use them if you can get your hands on them and secondly the evidence that she put forward is to why they needed to be banned the figures that she gave had nothing to do with India book were actually figures from the USA Let's have a listen to a little bit of what she said the cabinet has given approval today is 1st a decision to ban at least cigarettes. Now what does the ban mean it means production manufacturing import export transport all seen all even distribution and storage and advertisement relating East to grapes are all banned this decision is taken keeping in mind the impact that these cigarettes is having on the youth of today. Is she just getting out ahead of the problem as a sport there are. 3 things growing worse. Well I think that's what the same because you know if you walk around the streets of Delhi Mumbai. Chennai you do not see a lot of people and you see a lot of people smoking and chewing tobacco India is just behind China almost 100000000 people either smoke it or or chew it there are an extraordinary number of deaths every year estimated around 900000 they ping I think people feel may grow I certainly a lot of the companies that are involved in that industry would look at India as a very big possible market when you have so many people who are already consuming tobacco so I think there is a thought from the Indian government that this would be a way to prevent people moving toward a very pink there are some cynics who would point out that the Indian government owns quite a lot of i.t.c. India's biggest tobacco firm who shares did go up after this announcement was made and others as you can hear now from one vapor in Delhi feel that if the government's going to ban anything or at why they're not banning cigarettes as well if you subsidy have soared because the government believes from my perspective it's all right to smoke cigarettes it's always the smoke tobacco which is much more into star health then we've been would be an insider reaping is a much better and healthy alternative to smoking cigarettes Well I made a promise gentlemen is there any head of steam in favor of banning all tobacco. I don't think we're going to see that in India firstly because of the huge number of people it's not quite like let's say the us or the u.k. At the moment where smoking has gone out of fashion you still see a lot of people smoking in India and of course it brings in incredible amounts of revenue for the government and when you have 100000000 smokers or chewers of tobacco at the ballot box it's not going to be a very popular move to say that you're going to remove tobacco from them so really no discussion on that particular point and I think because there are so few vapors in India that it's actually not going to become a huge political issue there though I think many people are sort of scratching their head and wondering why the government banning something which most people can't even afford right well India doesn't have a national language doesn't but we've got a lively debate about. India has an extraordinary number of different languages. It have thousands of languages that are spoken by thousands of of different people Hindi would be the most spoken language in the country but you have languages like monarchy which of the 100000000 speakers Bengali which has 100000000 speakers there has always been this idea I think India looking particularly across the border at China of saying Should there be one national language there is Hindi at the moment and there is English but should Hindi become the dominant language of the country and that seemed to be what the home minister which are one of the most powerful politicians in India seem to be talking about a few days ago when he said there wasn't a need for one national language and it would make sense for that one national language to be Hindi that is led to a political storm in India languages always being such an important. Important Part of the country an important part of it diversity particularly in southern India where in the past have been huge riots against an idea of imposing Hindi as a national language so interesting that he's backed away from it but I think he's unleashed that debate out of the box and it's going to be very difficult to put it back into it and obviously you know please go to be particularly happy about it they don't speak Hindi and the Hindi as northern the native language is there really a huge amount of resistance to this whole idea of one national language or I'm sure the British tried it and they did pretty well didn't they were Think wish. To some extent yes no I think people would see English for a much as the language of the privileged but but if you move say from Calcutta where I normally am and you go to Carol and from the east to the south the language that you would speak to try and communicate with people would not be in the it would be English and that is very much the case in the south and I think the South and we're talking about a huge population we're talking about people who speak Tamil Canada Delhi goo. I mean there's a whole range of languages that millions of people speak are extremely resistant to this idea and we've already heard from a senior politician in southern India also used to be a former actor come of Huston who took to social media to post his thoughts on what Mr Shier had said the Unity in Diversity is a promise we made when we made in the door of the public now no Shar sold on our solemn about trigger in the on the promise we respect all languages but our mother language will always be jolly good was just a protest battle for all language will be exponentially bigger than that India our time on the order does not need or deserve such a battle. Because she's very articulate and very very eloquently Here's. Another he's one of the most it's one of the most sensitive points in India I think is is the language it gives people such an I dentity in call cut a Bengali it is the mother tongue of that particular region and you know people are my wife who is somebody who is fluent in Bengali would be her mother tongue gets extremely offended if she walks into a shop and somebody starts speaking to her in Hindi so when you begin to try and break up this debate even them some may say we need India may benefit from being able you know all Indians if they could communicate with each other it might be a good thing but I think it's such an emotive issue for people that it's one that I think the government will try maybe to put back into its box after sort of slowly notching it out there and seeing that the reaction to it is is basically not very good and it's similar to the reaction that there has been since independence. Now have so much fixing allegations from cricket what kind of cricket are we talking about. It's not a new conversation that we're having when we talk about Indian cricket and allegations of match fixing we're often looking at stories around the Indian Premier League but this I think is a 1st because it seems to be the 1st time that we have a case that's been registered against to a legit bookies for approaching a cricketer from the women's national team now we know that betting is a huge problem here in India but this apparently took place in Fabry before a limited over series was going to start in England and the 2 men approached the female cricketer pretending to be sports manages she though recorded the conversation and then handed it over to the Indian cricket board who have now made details of this public and I think what it does show you is that women's cricket is growing not only in popularity but also growing in the amount of money people are betting on it in India at the moment which is not a surprise because even though gambling is illegal in India people do love to bet on any cricket match that is taking place so I mean ever talk about legalizing gambling. There is a discussion about Iran and there are many who say that they feel that it could tackle the problem of match fixing which I think many people feel is still something that blights Indian cricket there are others though who say look the problem at the moment is that all the money that is being bet on cricket he's basically black money and if you made gambling legal those who were betting that money would not bet in those legal channels because they would worry that the tax man may knock on their door and say you know you've just put this huge bet on cricket where is this money come from so this is a split opinion on it but I think there is a growing feeling in India whether how much it will help is debatable that it's time for gambling to be made legal not just when it comes to cricket but on the horses and in casinos as well. Gambling industry in India it cannot have escaped your notice or at least almost escaped my Because I'm obviously. This is going to be John Humphrys morning presenting the Today programme. I've had.
