Conservatives on Campus Attempt to Find Their Footing As Trump Presidency Ends | News

Fallout from the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol, which left five people dead, reached Harvard’s Institute of Politics the following week. On Jan. 12, the bipartisan organization dismissed U.S. Representative Elise M. Stefanik ’06 (R-N.Y.) from its top leadership committee for her baseless claims of voter fraud.
The IOP’s move received an array of responses — including praise and criticism. Though Kennedy School Dean Douglas W. Elmendorf stated the decision was nonpartisan, it nonetheless surfaced questions about the commitment of the organization — and Harvard more broadly — to bipartisanship: with Stefanik’s removal, the Republican minority on the Senior Advisory Committee becomes even smaller. ....

Will Joe Biden Deliver on His Promises to Alleviate Student Loan Debt? | News

For Morgan R. Pratt, a Master of Public Policy candidate at the Kennedy School, a daunting obstacle stands between them and their dream of pursuing a career in climate activism following graduation — student loan debt.
“I have a lot of student loan debt and a really high propensity to do something in the public service industry,” Pratt said. “Right now, I have this huge incentive to just follow in the footsteps of my classmates and get a consulting gig — which would help eliminate my student loan debt, but put me into this workspace that creates all these perverse incentives.”
“Essentially, I’d be exacerbating the problems I really want to solve. Or I can just toil away and put myself in a bad place financially,” they added. ....

Amid Political Uncertainty, Harvard Students Greet Senate Flip with Elation, Cautious Optimism | News

Following narrow victories for Raphael G. Warnock and T. Jonathan “Jon” Ossoff in the runoff elections for Georgia’s Senate seats, Harvard students met the news of a Democratic-controlled Senate with a mix of elation, regret, and tempered anticipation.
Ossoff defeated former Sen. David A. Perdue Jr. (R-Ga.) by 1.2 points, while Warnock defeated Sen. Kelly L. Loeffler (R-Ga.) by about two points. With these victories, Democrats will hold a narrow majority in the Senate, with Vice President-elect Kamala D. Harris as the tiebreaker in the 50-50 split.
Several Harvard students spent the day celebrating the Senate results, with many in states of disbelief. Anna L. Duffy ’21, who worked as a Democratic field organizer in Georgia, said she spent the runoff day celebrating on a call with other campaigners for the Georgia Democrats. ....

Three Harvard Political Groups Release Bipartisan Statement Condemning Washington, D.C. Riot | News

Three Harvard political organizations condemned the riots at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. and called on national political leaders to do the same in a joint statement Wednesday evening.
The Harvard College Democrats, the Harvard Republican Club, and the Harvard Undergraduates for Bipartisan Solutions all signed the statement.
A mob of President Donald Trump s supporters stormed the Capitol Wednesday afternoon while Congress was counting electoral votes to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the November 2020 presidential election.
“Dissent is fundamental to democracy,” the statement reads. “But threatening the safety of members of Congress, journalists, staffers, Capitol employees, and all other bystanders is not dissent.” ....
