Pamplin Media Group - Opinion: Lawmakers can't take a shortcut to better eye health

Dr. Robert Bentley is a Portland ophthalmologist with more than 30 years of experience.
As a physician and practicing ophthalmological eye surgeon with more than 33 years of clinical experience, I ll be among the first to tell you how important a different profession, that of optometry, is for overall eye health care. Optometrists perform valuable services, including routine eye exams and prescriptions for eyeglasses and contacts.
But optometrists are not medical doctors; they are not physicians. They do not have years of medical school education and post-med school residency or surgical training. Nor do optometrists have the direct clinical experience that helps ophthalmologists like me manage and avoid difficult, or even life-threatening, patient safety situations. ....

Here's what cleared the Georgia Legislature on its last day

(The Center Square) – In addition to green-lighting the state’s
$27.2 billion spending plan for the upcoming fiscal year, Georgia lawmakers worked overtime to pass a number of bills before the legislative session ended early Thursday morning.
The General Assembly approved bills during the 14-hour session that would extend and review state tax breaks, limit police budget cuts, repeal the state’s citizen’s arrest law, keep daylight savings time and allow student-athletes to benefit financially from their abilities.
Gov. Brian Kemp has 40 days to approve or veto the bills before they become law. Here s a roundup of some of the bills passed on the last day of session: ....

CONOR NORRIS: Universal recognition would be big win for Mississippi

After the Senate passed House Bill 1263 a couple weeks ago, the House recently concurred and sent the bill to the governor’s desk. When this bill is signed into law, it will be a huge win for Mississippi. Sponsored by Rep. Becky Currie, HB 1263 would recognize occupational licenses from other states, making it easier for professionals to move to Mississippi.
As more people become accustomed to working remotely due to COVID-19, the physical location of people performing work is less important than ever before. As physical location no longer presents a barrier in many industries, the competition between states for workers will only intensify. This competition will require a regulatory environment that makes it easy for people to relocate to their state, which HB 1263 would do. ....

EDITORIAL: Electric vehicles are not a panacea

BY THE EDITORIAL PAGE STAFF OF THE FREE LANCE-STAR
THANKS IN part to steep discounts, billions of dollars in manufacturers rebates, generous federal and state tax credits, and even special utility rates in some cases, “nearly 5.4 million hybrid electric vehicles and just over 1.4 million plug-in electric cars have sold in the United States” as of October 2020, according to USAFacts. All-electric cars accounted for about 60 percent of those sales and plug-in hybrids the remaining 40 percent.
That sounds like a lot. But it’s just a fraction of the sales of vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE). “Plug-in electric cars accounted for just under 1 percent of all 146 million new light-duty vehicles sales between 2011 and 2019,” according to USAFacts. ....
