Chinese pharmaceutical firm Sinovac gets $500 million, boosting its coronavirus vaccine production

(Natural News)
Chinese drugmaker Sinovac Biotech has obtained a cash investment to help boost production of its COVID-19 vaccine. Generic drugs firm Sino Biopharmaceuticals announced on Dec. 7 that it acquired a 15 percent stake in Sinovac Life Sciences, the subsidiary in charge of vaccine manufacturing. Sinovac expects a yearly production output of 300 million Wuhan coronavirus vaccine doses, but this capacity will double once a second production facility is constructed by the end of 2020.
Sinovac chief Yin Weidong said the investment would enable the company “to improve [its] vaccine sales capabilities [and] expand in Asia markets.” Meanwhile, Sino Biopharmaceuticals said in an exchange filing that “the capital contribution will introduce a key strategic partner to the group.” It also said that “both parties will join efforts … in further improving vaccine sales capability, [expanding] to overseas markets … [and developing] new technologies.”

With still no emergency-use approval for Sinovac’s COVID-19 vaccine, it is becoming increasingly evident that the Indonesian government will have to wait until 2021 to kickstart its mass vaccination program.
Initially, the government had hoped to begin the vaccination program in the third week of December, 2020, with healthcare workers and legal enforcers getting first priority.

Jakarta. A cabinet shake-up triggered by the arrest of two ministers for graft allegation brought six new faces to the President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo administration on Tuesday.
The appointment of Sandiaga Uno as the new tourism and creative economy minister comes as the biggest surprise: both Jokowi’s rivals in last year’s presidential elections are now in the same boat.

Under-fire health minister dropped in Indonesian Cabinet reshuffle

Mr Budi Gunadi Sadikin, a former head of Bank Mandiri and chief of Indonesia's economic recovery task force, will take over the health portfolio.
Ms Olivia Herlinda, policy director at the Centre for Indonesia's Strategic Development Initiatives, said the reshuffle was an opportunity for a more effective approach.
"The new (Health) Minister should quickly map out the gaps in Covid-19 handling thus far and prioritise strategic actions," she said.
Mr Joko had hinted at the reshuffle back in June after lamenting a lack of a "sense of crisis" among his ministers.
The reshuffle come weeks after the ministers of fisheries and social affairs were named as suspects in corruption cases by the nation's anti-graft body. -

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesia’s president announced a Cabinet reshuffle Tuesday following the arrest of two of his ministers on corruption charges and his administration’s lacklustre pandemic response.
The Cabinet shake-up comes amid surging coronavirus cases in the world’s fourth most populous nation. Indonesia’s economy has fallen into recession for the first time since the Asian financial crisis more than two decades ago as the country struggles to control the pandemic.
Four ministers lost their jobs, including Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto, and two others were rotated to more important positions, ending weeks of speculation about the possible changes.
