Author Patricia Nicol reveals a selection of the best books on: Islands

I spent hours last week trying to calculate the best way to stretch some Air Miles from London to Aberdeen, to be with my mother on her birthday.
All the pictures on the website were of, frankly, more exotic destinations: Greek villages overlooking the deep blue of the Aegean, the aqua of the Caribbean lapping a palm-fringed beach, beautiful people partying in Ibiza.
I am an island obsessive. I love one in the sun, but also a wind-blown craggy northern one. There is something about crossing water to get to land — ideally aboard a ferry — that instils a spirit of adventure.

The 10 beautiful islands every Briton should visit

The 10 beautiful islands every Briton should visit
Our UK experts profile 10 beautiful islands that should be on your travel radar

"My top spot on Anglesey is Llanddwyn Bay in the south, where miles of sand frames the mouth of the Menai Strait and the floating mountains of Snowdonia"

From the heights of Scotland to the southern edges of England, Britain's coastline is dotted with incredible isles. So hoist the mainsail (or catch the next ferry) – every Briton should have these spots in their sights:
1. Skye
Clattering on to the deck of the Skye ferry in the Arctic half-light of a January blizzard, I felt as if we were crossing to a land invented by Tolkien. I first went to Skye as a teenager to climb mountains. Back then the island felt as remote as Spitsbergen. It still feels very Lord of the Rings. Fangs of old grey rock loom 3,000ft above silent lochs and hobbity crofts, while paths climb in riddles to the clouds. These days the ferry has been replaced by a slender parabola of concrete, so the transition from mainland to island is less sensational, but Skye is still a world apart.

17 family-friendly UK campsites beside the sea

Wake to to sea views at these coastal campsites

Imagine it's one of those bright, blue-sky summer mornings. You wake to the sound of birdsong and the odd sheep. Outside, you catch a glimpse of a green swathe of grass with glittering sea beyond. It's the sort of view you'd pay a fortune to bag if you were staying in a hotel – but it's yours for just a few pounds at one of Britain's coastal campsites.
Many sites have direct access to the beach, perfect for a swim or surf before breakfast – and ideal for families with lots of beach clobber. Then at the end of the day it's a clamber back up the path for a barbecue as you watch the sun slip over the horizon.

Isles of Scilly holiday | House & Garden

Plants from all over the world flourish at Tresco Abbey Gardens, thanks to the unusually warm climate
Tom Parker
A flicker of wings catches my eye, darting through the small churchyard before alighting on a lichen-laced tombstone, a distinctive red tail bobbing up and down. This delicate black redstart has recently arrived from Eastern Europe – here, like so many unexpected plants and animals on this exotic archipelago, for the mild climate.
I am on Tresco, the second biggest of the low-lying granite islands that make up the Isles of Scilly – cast like rose petals into the Atlantic, off the tip of Land’s End. There are around 140 of these subtropical islands, yet only five are inhabited. It is day two and I am exploring with Will Wagstaff, a naturalist and ornithologist, who explains how these islands see many rare birds, blown off course by the winds. ‘Just yesterday an indigo bunting, scarcely seen in the UK, appeared here from North America,’ he says. We wander lanes where ice plants and aeoniums sweep over stone walls, and crimson bromeliads blush red in the autumn sunshine. In the path of the Gulf Stream, the Scillies rarely have frosts, revealing how these succulents can grow so bountifully. ‘We have native species, like the dwarf pansy, but half the island’s species are introduced and wouldn’t be able to grow anywhere else in Britain,’ continues Will.

St Michael’s Mount, Cornwall (Mont Saint-Michel, Normandy)
Photograph: Diane Randell/Alamy
A spiritual twin to Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, the Cornish version shares its conical shape. Where Mont Saint-Michel has a Benedictine abbey, St Michael’s Mount has a castle that has been a family home since the 1600s. Both have fine coastal walks and a rich medieval history. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, St Michael’s Mount also has the added draw of its famous sub-tropical garden. About 30 people still live on the island that’s linked to the mainland by a causeway, with amphibious vehicles taking tourists and islanders to and from the mainland when the tide is high.
