Rosalynn Carter, nee Eleanor Rosalynn Smith, American first lady (1977–81), the wife of Jimmy Carter, 39th president of the United States, and mental health advocate. She was one of the most politically astute and active, as well as one of the most popular, of all American first ladies.
“Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” former president Jimmy Carter said in a statement about his wife's passing.
The Carter Center said she died Sunday after living with dementia and suffering many months of declining health.
