Nick Wignall, Tracks Manager at UTAC CERAM Millbrook explains the role physical test tracks play in vehicle testing and validation, and how recent developments ensure they remain crucial to the future of automotive engineering.

In this series of guest blogs by my colleagues at UTAC CERAM Millbrook, we have looked closely at a range of new and future technologies, to help automotive engineers keep pace with consumer and legislative demands.
In a world of intelligent simulation technology and highly advanced climatic chambers, it would be easy to think that physical test tracks will soon be a thing of the past. The reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

2021 Bentley Blower Continuation Revives Bentley's Past

2021 Bentley Blower Continuation Revives Bentley's Past
Bentley builds a supercharged time machine with a modern recreation of its legendary 1930 race car.
The gradual evolution of the automobile has meant that different innovations have arrived at different times, and leaping back 90 years in automotive history makes for a strange combination of the familiar and the utterly alien. It's a point made spectacularly well by the Bentley Blower Continuation, a vehicle that manages the unique trick of possessing both a new-car smell and a genuine pre-war driving experience.
The Blower's dial-strewn dashboard seems to have been modeled on the mantelpiece of an English country manor, yet it houses both a tachometer and a speedometer—features that few cars had in 1930. It doesn't have a fuel gauge, however. A period Blower's owner—or, likely, their servant—would have checked the car's fuel level by simply gazing into its vast, 26.4-gallon tank. The Blower's floor-mounted gearshift is laid out in a conventional H pattern—top left for first gear, bottom right for fourth—although it is positioned awkwardly to the right of the right-hand driving position. The clutch pedal also is where your left foot expects to find it. But things get more archaic with the realization that this vintage of Bentley predates conventionally modern pedal positioning, what with its accelerator situated in the middle and the brake pedal on the right.

2021 Lamborghini Sián Previews Lambo's Hybrid Future

2021 Lamborghini Sián Previews Lambo's Hybrid Future

With its supercapacitor-based hybrid system, the $3 million, 807-hp Sián primes Lamborghini's V-12 for electrification.
The Lamborghini Sián's supercapacitor hybrid system has been getting attention since this limited-run Aventador-based special was announced, but the reality of it is a bit anti-climactic. While the Sián is a bona fide supercar experience, there's nothing unusual or noteworthy about how the hybrid system acts or feels.
Although Lamborghini's hybrid technology is both clever and pioneering, there isn't very much of it. The compact system adds just 75 pounds to the weight of the car, which includes an electric motor integrated into the transmission. Power is stored in a supercapacitor mounted to the rear bulkhead. Lamborghini claims that the supercapacitor setup is three times lighter than a lithium-ion battery with similar energy capacity, although the system's actual storage capability isn't specified. Supercapacitors get their name because they store dramatically more energy than that of a typical capacitor found in electronic devices. Unlike a battery, there's no chemical reaction when charging or discharging, so supercapacitors are very efficient and can charge and discharge rapidly. (In the Sián's case, it can flow up to 600 amps of current.)

2021 Lamborghini Sián review

While billionaires probably aren’t great at delaying gratification, that’s what those lucky enough to get their names down for the
2021
Lamborghini Sián have had to do.
This Aventador-based special was officially unveiled at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show – back in the days when we had motor shows – but the entire run of 63 coupes had already sold out before the covers were whipped off.
That was despite a price tag of €2.5m (AUD$3.9m) before the additional hosing of taxes and duties, or any conversation with Lambo’s Ad Personam bespoke service. Buyers have had to sit on their hands for nearly 18 months before cars started to be delivered. You’re welling up for them, aren’t you?

Seat Leon eHybrid

© Autocar
Intro The Seat Leon has always been an interesting but quite ordinary hatchback. Of the last-generation version, there were some shopping-trolley versions and, later on, some very fruity versions indeed, and you could buy it with four-wheel drive and as an estate. However, in fundamental terms, it was an easy car to understand and, being well resolved in dynamic concerns right across the board, also easy to drive.Early impressions of the new, fourth-generation Leon are that it retains better than average looks and continues to offer a quietly satisfying driving experience, but elsewhere things have changed. The breadth of the Leon line-up has grown substantially, and not only is there new technology never before seen on this model but, in Cupra, an entirely new brand has also entered the fray. The standard range now begins with a 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine supplied by Volkswagen. The notable development is that you can also have it in mild-hybrid eTSI form, with a 48V belt-driven starter-generator that provides brake-energy recuperation, coasting ability and a modest power boost when moving off the mark. The same applies to the 1.5-litre TSI petrol, although the sole diesel in the range is an unelectrified and, despite the fresh internals and lowest-ever emissions, almost relic-feeling 2.0-litre TDI.But the new Leon also represents Seat’s first dive into what you might call the ‘substantially’ electrified arena, and the 1.4-litre eHybrid PHEV breaking that ground is the subject of this week’s road test. It’s easily the most compelling model in the range on paper, but we’ll shortly discover how it fares in the real world. What might confuse those who, understandably, may not have their finger on the pulse of all things Leon is what has happened to Cupra. What started as Seat’s answer to VW’s GTI sub-brand with the Ibiza Cupra of 1996 is, as of 2018, a fledgling brand of its own, but one still heavily reliant on Seat hardware. It therefore makes its own hot take on our Leon eHybrid and will eventually expand the Cupra Leon range to include 242bhp, 296bhp and 306bhp models with different drivelines and bodystyles.Truly, there will be a Leon for every occasion, but today we focus on the regular, if also somewhat irregular, plug-in hybrid. The Leon line-up at a glanceSeat’s UK Leon range effectively contains three petrol engines, each available with varying degrees of electrification, and one solitary diesel. Paying extra for a mild-hybrid version of either of the lower-end petrols also gets you a dual-clutch automatic gearbox but, oddly, doing that doesn’t actually get you a lower-emissions car. There’s a seven-rung trim line-up, starting with SE and finishing with Xcellence Lux.Price £30,970 Power 201bhp Torque 258lb ft 0-60mph 7.2sec 30-70mph in fourth 9.3sec Fuel economy 43.6mpg CO2 emissions 27g/km 70-0mph 45.9m
