A sunken Indonesian submarine was found broken into pieces on the seabed, senior military officials announced Sunday, as they declared all 53 crew members dead in waters off Bali more than a half-mile deep.
An unmanned Singaporean submersible vehicle captured images of the wreckage of the KRI Nanggala-402 at a depth of 838 meters (2,750 feet), said Air Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, Indonesia’s military chief, as he confirmed that the submarine had disintegrated under enormous pressure at depths far below those it could safely dive to.
“We have received images that have been confirmed to be parts of the submarine including the rear vertical rudder, the anchor, the outer pressure body and other parts of the ship including safety suits,” Hadi told a press conference at an air force base in Bali.

An Indonesian military submarine that went missing off Bali with 53 people on board is expected to run out of oxygen in two days, the Navy chief said Thursday.
The German-made KRI Nanggala-402 lost contact about 95 kilometres north of Bali in the early hours of Wednesday during a torpedo attack exercise with 49 crew members, three gunners and a commander, officials said.
It is believed to be 600-700 metres underwater, the Navy said.
“In the event of an electrical failure, the oxygen can last approximately 72 hours,” Navy chief of staff Admiral Yudo Margono said at a news conference.

Rescue efforts continue for a missing Indonesian submarine with 53 crew aboard, believed sunk in deep water about 60 miles north of Bali.
Naval authorities said the sub's oxygen would be depleted by Saturday. The extreme depth may make recovery impossible, authorities said.
The KRI Nanggala-402 sub is thought to be 2,000 to 2,300 feet deep, which threatens to crush the vessel. Ahn Guk-hyeon, an official from South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, told The Associated Press that the collapse depth for the submarine was 200 meters (656 feet) when Daewoo refitted the vessel's internal structures and systems in 2009-2012.

(CNN) -- Indonesia's Navy is searching for a missing submarine with 53 people on board that went missing during a
military exercise on Wednesday, Indonesian authorities say.
In a statement published Wednesday night, the Indonesian Ministry of Defense said the KRI Nanggala-402, a German-made submarine, lost contact during a torpedo drill in the Bali Strait -- a stretch of water between the islands of Java and Bali that connects to the Indian Ocean and Bali Sea.
The submarine asked for permission to dive, or submerge, at 3 a.m. local time (3 p.m. ET) before losing contact, it said. The statement added that an oil spill was seen in aerial surveillance near the dive point, around 7 a.m. local time.
