Breaking club transfer records has become a regular occurrence in recent years, but it was not always like that. Here we take you through 11 of Liverpool’s record signings over the years.
With the commercialisation and commodification of football having taken a stranglehold on the industry, the lining in the pockets of modern clubs are significantly deeper.
It has led to hundreds of millions of pounds sent from one club to another, a distant memory from the tens to hundreds of thousands for star players in the mid-1900s.
Previous to that, Liverpool would kick it all off with a £35 move for William Dunlop in 1895 from Paisley Abercorn but the post-war saw fees in the tens of thousands, starting with Albert Stubbins in 1946 for £12,500.

Liverpool coasted past an RB Leipzig side that underestimated the challenge ahead of them in the Champions League, with dreams of Istanbul 2.0 growing among fans.
Having already taken a 2-0 lead from the ‘away’ leg of a two-legged tie held at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, the Reds put their wavering Premier League behind them to seal a ‘home’ 2-0 win on Wednesday night.
Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane got the goals in a game Liverpool dominated, as though Leipzig certainly had chances, it seemed as though manager Julian Nagelsmann set his side up to fail.
The return of Fabinho to midfield helped the Reds in their ability to stifle their Bundesliga opposition, while both Nat Phillips and Ozan Kabak held firm at centre-back, allowing their team-mates to thrive further forward.

This happy tree was spotted by Julie Gale, who concludes that it’s cheerful demeanour may be the result of a lack of woodcutting firms in the neighbourhood.
WHEN it comes to unwelcome neighbours, the Diary always assumed the worst type to discover across the garden fence would be a drummer specialising in heavy metal music.
But London-based Scottish broadcaster Zara Janjua has found herself living side-by-side with a non-drumming chap who also knows how to dish out the decibels... an opera singer.
A rather trepidatious Zara requested he cork the cacophony for an hour while she completed a recording for an event.

Jordan Henderson's tribute to St John and Sir Kenny
Jordan Henderson has explained the deep influence Ian St John and Sir Kenny Dalglish have had on the current Liverpool team.
Ian St John remembered for brilliant Saint and Greavsie show
I was a BBC boy at heart and loved the commentary of Barry Davies and John Motson, we'd always chose good old Auntie for coverage of the FA Cup Final as the voice of Brian Moore really grated on me.
But compared to boring old Bob Wilson on BBC1, Saint and Greavsie were a complete revelation, with Saint's chuckle and Greavsie's outspoken comments that trod the touchline of political correctness.
I found myself rewatching some old Saint and Greavsies on YouTube this week and it was great to see them again.
Suddenly I was back in 1989 with braces on my teeth and a copy of Match Magazine on my lap.

Pain at the Palace
Despite how boring the games themselves were to watch, as a United fan I wasn’t actually too despondent drawing all those games in the “Top 6 mini-league”.
However,
last night was a disaster, and they seemed to have developed a bit of a rut for themselves. The 0-0 in Selhurst Park is the sixth such scoreline of the season to date, and only twice has that figure been matched by United over an entire season during the Premier League era (2016-17 and 04-05). And would anyone back against United not having at least one more 0-0 in any of the remaining “important” games before the year’s out?

Though Ireland's prospects of deriving any benefit from the fixture were considered slim, RTÉ took a chance and sent George Hamilton to Sofia to do live commentary on Bulgaria's match at home to Scotland on 11 November 1987.
Bulgaria hadn't lost a game at home in several years and, as the Irish players and management could attest to, referees had a rather pronounced tendency to deliver outrageous decisions in their favour in the Vasil Levski Stadium.
Nonetheless, there was a chance. In the previous round of international fixtures, Ireland had concluded their campaign with an impressive 2-0 home win over the Bulgarians while the Scots, who'd already ruled themselves out of contention with a poor start to the campaign, beat 1986 World Cup semi-finalists Belgium 2-0 in Hampden later that day. This was the only combination of results that could have kept Ireland's hopes alive that week.

Glasgow Times Letters: Lockdown has gone on far too long now
CAN Nicola Sturgeon please enlighten me as to what she deems as a non-essential business?
I would imagine that people who open a business do so as they feel it’s viable to help them pay their mortgages and their other ESSENTIAL bills.
This lockdown has gone on long enough and there is no justification for closing down someone’s only means of income, also with all the issues that could lead to, i.e depression, family stress and sometimes far worse. So I ask again, Nicola, what is a
non-essential business?

It’s a fixture that has never been short of drama and the fans have always had a lot to say in the contest, but for the third time Liverpool’s meeting with Chelsea will be behind-closed-doors.
With a top four fight on their hands and a turbulent run of form of late, you just know Anfield would be in fine voice for the visit of the Blues on a cold Thursday evening.
But while we cannot be there to fill up the seats, you can always rely on the dulcet tones of The Voice of Anfield, George Sephton to build up an atmosphere.
