Washington, DC - The United States is concerned about the arrests of journalists affiliated with the group Bao Sach (Clean Journalism). Nguyen Phuoc Trung Bao, Nguyen Thanh Nha, and Doan Kien Giang were arrested on April 20 and charged with “abusing democratic freedoms” under Article 331 of the Penal Code. These arrests follow the December detention of another member of Bao Sach, Truong Chau Huu Danh, under the same charges.
These four arrests of journalists are the latest in a troubling trend of detentions and convictions of Vietnamese citizens exercising their rights to free expression and speech as enshrined in Vietnam’s constitution. The United States calls on the Vietnamese authorities to release all those unjustly detained and to allow all individuals in Vietnam to express their views freely and without fear of retaliation. Sacramento, California - Governor Gavin Newsom released the below statement today following the U.S. EPA’s announcement that it is reconsidering the previous administration’s withdrawal of California’s Clean Air Act waiver, which has been used for years by the state to set its own emissions standards:
“For more than half a century, waivers enabling California to develop rigorous vehicle emissions standards have allowed the Golden State to lead the nation with breakthrough innovations for progressively cleaner cars and trucks, while driving down pollution in overburdened communities.

Atlanta, Georgia - A Georgia correctional officer pleaded guilty today to violating the civil rights of an inmate.
According to documents filed in connection with the guilty plea, Jamal Scott, 33, an on-duty correctional officer at the Valdosta State Prison (VSP) in Valdosta, struck an inmate with his fist multiple times while the inmate was handcuffed and lying on the ground on Dec. 29, 2018. Specifically, Scott, along with Correctional Officer Brian Ford, Sergeant Patrick Sharpe, and other prison officials, escorted the handcuffed inmate to an outdoor area on the grounds of the prison for the purpose of assaulting the inmate in retaliation for an earlier altercation between the inmate and a female officer. Scott and Ford, carrying out a directive from their supervisor, Sharpe, took the inmate to the ground and struck him multiple tim ....
