A new report by the aid group Oxfam has revealed that in 2021, India’s top one per cent owned about half its wealth. It also showed that the number of billionaires in the country increased from 102 in 2020, to 166 in the year 2022. This is as per the report as the poor in India “are unable to afford even basic necessities to survive”.
Scientists have made an amazing discovery. In an inhospitable valley in the Chilean Patagonia, they have come across the remains of four species of dinosaurs. The fossils which were discovered and transported to a laboratory in 2021, as per researchers, belong to species that have previously not been identified in the area. Chilean Antarctic Institute (Inach), in collaboration with the University of Chile and the University of Texas, made this discovery on an expedition.
An investigation has been launched after a package containing uranium was found at London's Heathrow Airport last month. The deadly material, which is used to make nuclear weapons, was not 'weapon grade' and thus could not be used to manufacture a thermo-nuclear weapon, said the Daily Mail report. However, the package, which reportedly came from Pakistan, could have been intended to be used in the making of a dirty bomb. AFP reports that the package, which had arrived on an Oman Air passenger jet from Muscat, was discovered during a routine search on December 29.
Amid tensions between neighbours Afghanistan-Pakistan, the United States in a rare move has backed Islamabad, remarking that the nation has the right to "defend" itself from terrorists. As per an IANS report, speaking to the press on Tuesday, US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said "We're aware of the recent statement by the Pakistani National Security Committee. The Pakistani people have suffered tremendously from terrorist attacks. Pakistan has a right to defend itself from terrorism."
