London Mayor election: How range of joke candidates led to record 114,000 ruined ballots

A dizzying range of joke candidates left voters so baffled a record number of ballots were rejected in this month's London mayoral election.
Around 114,000 ballots were spoilt after the first round of voting because the 20 candidates packed onto a sheet of A4 paper confused voters into either accidentally ticking the first-choice column twice or choosing too many contenders.
Labour candidate Sadiq Khan went on to secure victory in the May 6 election and has been awarded a second term as Mayor of London with 1,013,721 first-choice votes.
But with the four rows of candidates featuring mainly jokesters, public opinion may have become 'disenfranchised', according to one politics expert.

HOPES of a Labour revival under Sir Keir Starmer have suffered a blow after the Conservative Party comfortably won the Hartlepool by-election.
The Leave-supporting North East constituency went blue for the first time in its 47-year-old history, as Boris Johnson demolished another brick in Labour’s so-called “red wall”.
Voters in the town backed Tory candidate Jill Mortimer to be their next MP over Labour’s Dr Paul Williams – an avid Remainer and second-referendum campaigner during his time as MP for Stockton South between 2017-19 – in a rare by-election victory for a party in power for more than a decade.

The Conservatives have secured a thumping victory in the Hartlepool parliamentary by-election.
Jill Mortimer will be the town's new member of parliament, after defeating Labour's Paul Williams by a majority of 6,940 votes.

Hartlepool had been held by Labour since 1964, and since the current constituency was formed in 1974.
It's only the second time since 1982 that an opposition party has lost a by-election to a party in government.

The by-election was called after the resignation of Labour's Mike Hill in March. He is accused of sexual harassment, which he denies. His majority was just over 3,500 at the general election in 2019.

The Conservatives have taken the seat of Hartlepool in the 2021 by-election.
Tory candidate Jill Mortimer has won the seat with 15,529 votes to Labour candidate Dr Paul Williams' 8,589, securing a majority of 6,940 votes.

Jill Mortimer, Conservative
Mrs Mortimer is a farmer in North Yorkshire, she studied law at Teesside University as a mature student and has three children. She is currently a district councillor for Hambleton District Council, in North Yorkshire, she lives near Thirsk. If elected she will become the first Conservative MP for Hartlepool since the seat was created in 1974.
While, campaigning Mrs Mortimer said she wants ‘Hartlepool to build back better’ and if elected she wants to make sure ‘Hartlepool is at the centre of the post-pandemic recovery by creating more jobs and attracting extra-investment to the town’.
Her campaign focused ‘on delivering on the people’s priorities for the town’.

The Hartlepool by-election pits Boris Johnson’s Conservatives against a Labour Party led by Keir Starmer for the first time at the ballot box of a parliamentary election. The contest on May 6 will also be the first by-election of the 2019 parliament.
Hartlepool’s status as a ‘Red Wall’ seat, which has been held by Labour at every election since 1964 and voted heavily for Brexit in the 2016 EU Referendum, means the by-election has also been framed as the first test of Starmer’s ability to repair the damage inflicted on the party in the 2019 general election.

It used to be one of politics' golden rules. Oppositions win parliamentary by-elections; governments lose them.
Old maxims do not seem to count for much now though, and Labour is worried that it could lose in Hartlepool - a seat the party has held since the current constituency was formed in 1974.
That's because another supposed rule of thumb has bitten the dust - the idea that people in places like Hartlepool do not vote Conservative.
The Tories came a competitive second at the 2019 general election, reducing the Labour majority to 3,595 votes.

Sir Keir has thrown his support behind Labour candidate Paul Williams, an NHS doctor, former Stockton South MP and "excellent candidate", according to the Labour leader.
Mr Williams faces Jill Mortimer, a councillor and farmer campaigning to be the first Conservative MP for Hartlepool since the seat was created in 1974.
ITV News heard various voting intentions from the people of Hartlepool, including a nurse who said she plans to vote Conservative.
