Covid-19 Vaccine: MOH seeking senior citizen volunteers for phase three clinical trial

KUALA LUMPUR: Volunteers aged 60 and above are being sought by the Health Ministry (MOH) to participate in phase three clinical trial of the Covid-19 vaccine.
The Health Ministry (MOH) through its official social media Facebook and Twitter accounts, informed that around 350 to 450 senior citizens were needed for the study which will also test the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine for the group.
“We welcome senior citizens who are interested in contributing to the development of the Covid-19 vaccine,” stated the post.
MOH informed that interested individuals can contact the nine hospitals involved, namely Ampang Hospital, Sarawak General Hospital, Penang Hospital, Seberang Jaya Hospital, Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital, Taiping Hospital, Sungai Buloh Hospital and Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital.

Vaccine development involves various steps to ensure the final product is both safe and efficient. Initially, the fundamental research is carried out, once the vaccine candidate is manufactured, preclinical animal studies are conducted in animal models. Then the vaccine enters small phase 1 studies, focusing on safety, and then larger phase 2 studies, with a focus on efficiency.

Vaccine trials in Malaysia


Dr Akhmal: ‘While we wait for a Covid-19 vaccine to be procured, distributed, and administered to our population, clinical research is an important step to ensure that the vaccine fulfils the requirement of the regulatory authorities which looks at its safety, quality, and efficacy.’
MALAYSIA is now seeing the initiation of the first Covid-19 vaccine trial in the country.
“It is a Phase 3 vaccine trial, by the Institute of Medical Biology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. The trial application is currently ongoing for review and approval by the regulatory authority and ethics committee before being conducted in our hospitals here, ” says Dr Akhmal Yusof, CEO of Clinical Research Malaysia (CRM).
