Editorial: State must protect pregnant workers

A woman shouldn’t have to choose between her job and her health or the health of her unborn child.
Thirty states have laws to address this concern, requiring employers to offer pregnant workers accommodations such as additional breaks, help with manual labor and schedule modifications.
Indiana has no such law.
While many Hoosier employers do the right thing by voluntarily providing accommodations for pregnant women, others demand that pregnant employees continue to work under the same rules and conditions as other workers.
A bill that would have fixed the problem failed in the Republican-dominated state Senate in 2020. This year, two additional bills died without a hearing. Members of the GOP supermajority contend that such legislation would place an outsized burden on employers, particularly small businesses. ....

Carrera Receives Ohio 4-H Award


Tony Carrera of Berlin Center was inducted into the Ohio 4-H Hall of Fame at the annual 2021 4-H volunteer recognition celebration.
Ohio 4-H Hall of Fame inductees are individuals who have made significant lifetime contributions and who have also made an important positive impact upon clubs, communities and the state 4-H program. Carrera has been a 4-H adviser of the Canfield Bridle Buddies Club in Mahoning County for 55 years, but he is more than just a 4-H adviser to the youth in his club. He is a mentor who is always ready to go beyond what is expected. He mentors youths to learn from their projects to gain skills they will use throughout their lives. In the early 1970s, Carrera saw a need at the Canfield Fair to provide affordable food for 4-H families. And so, the Pop Shop was born and ....

It was the last thing Al Braccolino, 90, of Crown Point, told one of his daughters as paramedics loaded him into an ambulance Nov. 16. COVID-19 forced him into the final fight of his life.
Ten days later, the chair Al usually occupied at the Thanksgiving table would sit empty. The husband to his wife of 70 years, father of three and grandfather of six died on the holiday.
Al’s daughter, Sandra Noe, was herself suffering from COVID-19, which she contracted while caring for her sick parents, when the virus forced Al’s hospitalization.
