With very high winds and the rushing water. yeah, especially this coastline is so vulnerable to the storm surge. we ll get into the details about that. sara, it s literally off to the races for hurricane idalia now into the open waters of the warm gulf of mexico. and we talk about that being jet fuel because water temperatures there are literally 2 to upwards of 4 degrees fahrenheit above where they should be this time of year. that is just going to aid in this intensification process. you can see on my graphics, there s the hurricane there. it has a general northerly trajectory. and it s moving at quite a clip. 14 miles per hour. that s significant because that means it s going to bring those first rain bands on to the west coast of the florida peninsula here in the coming hours. here is a look at that storm surge. i want to show you that red area we re highlighting. basically that is the most vulnerable coastline in all of america, storm surge. 8 to 12 feet in cedar key. ....

Refuge area even if we go left or right a little bit. 100 mile per hour storm right now. a little brighter color pattern, more purple color in the center of the eye. that means the storms are higher, they re colder, they re the tensifying. something else i ve just seen here. on the radar we re seeing lightening again which means likely an intensification process going on. the track has changed slightly to the west, 20 miles or so from the last advisory at 5:00, but that puts hurricane force winds all the way into georgia. there are hurricane warnings in georgia. can t remember the last time i ve seen a hurricane warning across state lines, but that s what s going to happen here. we have 125 mile per hour, 120 mile per hour storm, moving fairly quickly it s not going to slow down in time to not be a hurricane by the time it gets to georgia. notice there s an awful lot of lightening here in parts of florida as well. we talked about this yesterday where there s a potential even ....

This is just a very serious storm. it ll be one of the very strongest storms to hit louisiana since the 1850s. well, let s talk about all of this with tyler mauldin. tyler, hi. just give us a sense of of where it s heading right now. hurricane ida has begun its rapid intensification process, robyn. it s about 185 miles to the south of houma, louisiana. about 100 miles to the south-southeast of the mouth of the mississippi river. and it s heading right in that direction. sustained wind right now of 115 miles per hour so it has strengthened by 15 miles per hour just within four hours. gusts are all the way up to 125. it s gonna continue to rapidly intensify, unfortunately. once we get to sunrise, we re looking at a category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 130. gusts as high as 150. it then makes landfall somewhere between grand isle and houma, louisiana, around, i would say, ....

Right now. yes. the storm is still strengthening, though and expected to become a hurricane late today. cnn meteorologist allison chinchar joins us now. where is it heading? it s going to be eventually heading toward bermuda. in the short term the good news it s heading away from the united states and the bahamas and taking the threat of gusty winds and heavy rainfall. sustained winds about 60 miles per hour. so that is an increase about the same time we were yesterday. we are seeing that intensification process. movement is technical to the north/northwest at 7 miles per hour but see a shift in the northeast the next 24 hours. when it does that, it s going to enter a more favorable environment for development and we think a category two by the time we get to wednesday of the upcoming week. the concern then is where does it go from there? bermuda is technically in the track right now as potentially category two storm. ....

Becoming a major concern. the slower it moves the worse this hit could be, where is dorian right now? right, so it s still out over the open atlantic. we ve been seeing it go through an eye wall replacement cycle. we ve started to see that intensification process, thus, we are now up to a category three storm, also known as a major hurricane. winds increased up to 115 miles per hour, the forward movement pretty much the same, northwest at 10 miles per hour, that is going to be one of the key things to monitor over the next 48 hours, because that is really going to give us an idea of when and where this storm is going to make landfall. as of right now, we expect more intensification. likely in the next 36 to 48 hours from now, and it will be a category 4 as it crosses over the bahamas, the question is, where does it go from there. does it end up impacting more of ....
